Transplanted Sapling Long-term Survivability with Experimental Fungicide and Fencing at Multiple Michigan Sites (2009-2023)
Long-term transplant sapling recruitment (2009-2023) in Michigan, seeking to understand the effects of transplanting northern, southern, and locally sourced tree seeds. Regional sapling transplants simulate the effects of climate change as well as different tree species' ability to survive human-assisted northward migration. This dataset includes >25 species of trees and woody plants with approximately 500 surviving saplings out of ~24,000 transplanted throughout 2009-2017. Saplings are also experimentally treated with fungicide, some fenced to prevent deer browse, and planted under differing levels of canopy cover. Saplings are censused yearly, most recently 2023, recording survival and height.
The road to success and the fences to be crossed: Considering multiple infrastructure in landscape connectivity modelling (Dataset and script)
<p>Linear infrastructure represent a barrier to movement for many species, reducing the connectivity of the landscapes in which they reside. Of all linear infrastructure, roads and fences are two of the most ubiquitous, and are understood to reduce landscape connectivity for wildlife. However, what is often neglected consideration is a holistic approach of modelling the effects of multiple types of linear infrastructure simultaneously. Few studies have examined this, typically assessing the impacts of a singular kind of infrastructure on landscape connectivity. Therefore, the aim of this study is to address the relative importance of considering multiple kinds of linear infrastructure in landscape connectivity modelling. We utilised presence data of red deer <em>Cervus elaphus</em> and wild boar <em>Sus scrofa</em> in Doñana Biosphere Reserve (Spain) to generate a sequential approach of scenarios of landscape connectivity; firstly only with environmental variables, secondly with roads as the sole infrastructure, thirdly with the addition of fences, and finally with the further addition of fences and wildlife road-crossing structures. We found that the connectivity of the landscape was greatly affected by the addition of fences and wildlife road-crossing structures in both species, with fences in particular causing considerable alterations to estimated movement pathways. Our finding impresses a need to consider multiple different types of linear infrastructure when modelling landscape connectivity to enable a more realistic view of wildlife movement and inform mitigation and conservation measures more accurately.</p>

<p>1. Over a century of ecophysiological studies on lizards have perpetuated the assumption that basking and shuttling movements between sun and shade function solely for temperature regulation. However, these behaviors also modulate exposure to ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths that are essential for maintaining physiological homeostasis as well as ensuring proper growth and development and enhancing long-term fitness.</p> <p>2. An alternative hypothesis is that lizards also actively regulate their UV exposure. In this scenario, UV needs may even override temperature needs (or vice versa), generating asymmetries in the ability of a lizard to regulate both conditions equally. We test this hypothesis using field and laboratory data collected on adult <em>Sceloporus undulatus</em>.</p> <p>3. We found that <em>S. undulatus</em> actively regulate UV exposure and prioritize UV over temperature, favoring body temperatures much higher than preferred values to sustain preferred UV exposure. In stark contrast, temperature had no reciprocal impact on UV regulation behavior. Our field data support these patterns, suggesting that lizards may even seek out hotter environments despite thermal costs to enhance UV exposure.</p> <p>4. We conclude that <em>S. undulatus</em> actively regulate for UV as well as temperature. Unfortunately, outside of zoos and private hobbyists, appreciation of the importance of UV for ectotherm survival and reproductive success has been minimal. Addressing this deficit will therefore be vital to improve our understanding of the factors shaping the evolution of ectotherm photoregulation behavior in nature.</p>

MultiFranceFences: A novel deep learning dataset for automated fence detection from multimodal aerial imagery
<p>The <strong>MultiFranceFences</strong> dataset is a large-scale, multimodal remote sensing benchmark for the semantic segmentation of fences across various landscapes in France. This dataset integrates high-resolution orthophotographs (RGB through BDOrtho) and Digital Surface Models (DSM) derived from LiDARHD data. </p> <p>MultiFranceFences is suitable for deep learning models in semantic segmentation, including state-of-the-art models like UNet, D-LinkNet, and the newly proposed H-IncepUNet, which integrates handcrafted features and multi-scale feature extraction modules for enhanced fence detection.</p> <p><strong>Dataset features:</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Multimodal imagery</strong>: Combines orthophotographs and DSM data from LiDARHD for fences semantic segmentation (folders <em>ortho</em> and <em>lidar</em>).</li> <li><strong>Buffer options</strong>: 2-meter and 3-meter buffer fence annotations to fit varying detection requirements (folders <em>fences_2m</em> and <em>fences_3m</em>).</li> <li><strong>Diverse landscapes</strong>: Covers rural, and natural environments across France.</li> <li><strong>Validated dataset</strong>: Manually cleaned and validated to remove erroneous fence labels under tree canopies or areas with limited visibility.</li> </ul> <p>Each patch is named according to the nomenclature of the original BDOrtho tile, followed by the specific x and y coordinates of the patch within that tile.</p>
Annotated Video Dataset of Fencing Movements and Corresponding Error Patterns
<p>Video dataset containing 1289 videos and their augmentation of four fencing movements, performed by a variety of fencers. The main actions included are counterattack, lunge, flèche and parry. Bats use live fences to move between tropical dry forest remnants
<p>Linear features can benefit wildlife by assisting animal movement. We captured bats along barbed-wire and live-tree fences connecting Tropical Dry Forest patches in Nicaragua. Bat species richness and captures were higher along live fences but we noted differences in sex ratios, richness, and species composition compared to surrounding natural forests.</p>

A fence-rail from Bharhut
This carving, from a stupa at the site of Bharhut in northwest India, provides an early document of Buddhist faith and art. Images of a man and a woman are repeated three times to represent their movement as they walk around the stupa and kneel before it in worship. Flying celestial beings above bear offerings of flower garlands with which to adorn the dome of the stupa.
