Field and laboratory measurements of suspended-sediment particle size and concentration from nine rivers draining to the Great Barrier Reef
<p>Dataset includes in-situ (n = 144,912) and laboratory-dispersed (n = 64) particle size measurements collected using laser diffractometry from nine rivers discharging along 800 km of Great Barrier Reef, Queensland Australia coastline. Two field campaigns (24 February to 5 March 2021 and 24th to 31st of April 2021) were undertaken to collect vertical profiles of in-situ particle size, water velocity, turbidity, and salinity. Water samples were collected for analysis of laboratory-dispersed particle size and suspended-sediment concentration. Water samples were collected using US-P61 or Van-Dorn samplers deployed alongside a LISST 200x laser diffractometer and an EXO2 YSI multiparameter water quality sonde. Total depth and water velocity were measured using a Nortek Signature ADCP and Teledyne RiverRay ADCP during the first and second field campaigns, respectively. During both campaigns, measurements were undertaken during relatively high discharge events when discharge exceeded the 90th percentile of 2020/2021 gauged wet season flows.</p> <p>Data are provided in three csv files. "In_situ_data.csv" contains in situ measurements of particle size, turbidity, salinity, and depth along with estimates of shear rate. Shear rate is estimated from theory and measurements of ADCP-measured total depth and depth-averaged flow (see equation 2 of Livsey et al., 2022). "Lab_data_this_study.csv" contains particle size measurements of suspended-sediment following laboratory dispersion along with coeval measurements of in-situ particle size, turbidity, salinity, and shear rate averaged over the filling time of the US-P61 sampler. "Lab_data_DES_WQI.csv" contains laboratory dispersed particle size measurements collected by the Department of Environment and Science Water Quality Investigation Unit of Queensland Australia (Turner et al., 2013) and compared to data in "Lab_data_this_study.csv" in Livsey et al (2022). </p> <p>Further details of the data collection effort and interpretation of the data are published in Livsey et al (2022) at https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JC017988. </p> <p>Additional data from the 24 February to 5 March 2021 field campaign, funded by CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, are available from Crosswell et al (2022) at https://doi.org/10.25919/2vbh-cx08.</p> <p>References:</p> <p>Crosswell, Joey; Carlin, Geoff; Daniel, Livsey; Hillyer, Katie; Steven, Andy (2022): FNQ_2021_V01 Voyage dataset: Feb - March 2021; Biogeochemical and hydrodynamic obervations along the river-reef continuum of estuaries in eastern Cape York, Australia. v1. Dataset: A database of near-field head-related transfer functions based on measurements with a laser spark source
<p>This is a database of near-field head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of an artificial head, measured at four distances (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 m), with 49 positions recorded at each distance, for a total of 196 measurement points. The HRTFs were recorded using an acoustic pulse created by a laser-induced breakdown of air (LIB), which realizes a close to ideal, massless, monopole sound source. The repository contains the original measurement data (raw_data.zip), the derived HRTFs both with (NF_LIB_HRTF_LFE.sofa) and without (NF_LIB_HRTF_measured.sofa) a low-frequency extension (LFE) applied, as well as the MATLAB code used to process the measurement data and to apply the LFE (LIB_HRTF_DB.zip). The database is made publicly available to support future research into nearby sound localization, and virtual/augmented reality applications.</p> <p>Please see the accompanying paper for further details: Marschall et al. Data from nitrogen isotopic analyses used to calculate biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) rates and field measurements from lichen, bryophyte, litter, and soil samples in MAT2006 plots, Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2022-2023.
This dataset contains nitrogen (N) fixation and isotope data from experimental samples collected at Toolik Lake, Alaska during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Sampling was conducted across multiple block treatments to capture spatial variability and included four substrate types: lichen, moss, litter, and soil. Within each plot, substrates were collected systematically along transects to ensure representative sampling, with lichen samples collected opportunistically due to lower abundance. Samples were incubated in the field under ambient conditions using 15N₂ to measure biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). In 2023, a short-term wetting experiment was conducted to assess the influence of moisture on BNF rates, with subsamples exposed to controlled additions of water. Across both years, data include isotope ratios, incubation conditions, moisture, fresh and dry biomass, and treatment assignments. The dataset provides information on BNF across substrate types, moisture regimes, and fertilization treatments in Arctic tundra. These data support investigation of N cycling processes, the influence of moisture and fertilization on fixation rates, and variability across vegetation types. The dataset is complete for the two field seasons (2022 and 2023) and includes sample- and block-level metadata necessary for reuse in ecological and biogeochemical research.
Modeled riparian stream shading: Agreement with field measurements and sensitivity to riparian conditions
Data was collected from relatively straight channel segments in eight stream and river segments ranging from 12 to 43 meters wide in Clarke County, GA in 2008. Only channels wide enough to feature a canopy gap between the overhanging tree branches were selected. Within each stream segment stream azimuth, latitude and longitude, riparian tree height, bankfull channel width, bank height, canopy overhang height, and measurements of canopy cover with a densiometer were collected. Time and date of collections were recorded.
Field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states in a non-tidal, salinizing peat marsh in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, June 2018 - ongoing
This dataset package details a field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states found within a salinizing, non-tidal peat marsh in the coastal Everglades. There are four datasets included: FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_HydroGeo includes point measurements of soil surface elevation, bedrock elevation, soil depth, water depth, and porewater salinity across ecosystem states: emergent marsh (sawgrass dominated), submerged marsh (submerged aquatic vegetation), and unvegetated open water. The survey was conducted between November 2019 to January 2020. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio contains plot-scale (1 m^2) biological measurements from emergent marsh (sawgrass). Biological measurements (total sawgrass, average individual sawgrass biomass, and total sawgrass aboveground biomass), are inherently plot-level but geomorphic and hydrologic measurements were averaged (n = 3) for each plot. Standard deviations are provided. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio_LongTerm contains biological plot-scale (1 m^2) measurements at a bi-monthly timestep from Nov 2019 - July 2022 from a subset of plots (n = 9) included in the FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio dataset. Each bi-monthly measurement is the average value across all 9 nine plots. Standard deviations are also included. FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH contains long-term measurements of soil surface elevation change and vertical accretion from surface elevation change and marker horizon plots from June 2018 - May 2023. Average and standard errors across all plots are included as well as measurements from each plot. Also included is the cumulative number of dry days based on the average soil surface elevation for all plots. Data collection for all datasets is complete, except for FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH. SET-MH measurements are still ongoing.

Field measurements of aerosol particles near a runway at Narita International Airport, Japan
<p>Field measurements of aerosol particles were conducted at an observation point ~180 m from the centerline of runway A (~140 m from the edge of the runway) at Narita International Airport (NRT), Japan, in February 2018. The online aerosol instruments used for the field measurements consisted of an ultrafine condensation particle counter (UCPC; Model 3776, TSI, d50 = 2.5 nm), a condensation particle counter (CPC; Model 3771, TSI, d50 = 10 nm), a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS; Model 3080, TSI), and an engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS; TSI). The other instruments included a carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor (Model LI-840, Li-Cor Biosciences) and meteorological sensors. The sampling inlet for the UCPC, CPC, and SMPS was switched between an unheated (room temperature) mode and a 350°C heated mode every eight hours during selected time periods to measure the total and the non-volatile particles, respectively. The EEPS was operated independently from the UCPC/CPC/SMPS inlet system and it measured the unheated particle number size distributions during the entire period.</p>
