Murreviikko: an Annotated and Normalized Corpus of Dialectal Finnish Tweets

Murreviikko (literally 'Dialect week') is a campaign founded in the University of Eastern Finland to promote the use of Finnish dialects in social media. It started in 2020 and takes place mid-October.

The original data was collected from Twitter with the search word murreviikko ('dialect week') and hashtag #murreviikko separately for 2020, 2021 and 2022. The current dataset combines all the original collections.

The tweets are dialectologically annotated on two levels: following the East-West division of Finnish dialects, and following a seven-way division of Finnish dialects (South-West, Häme, Southern Ostrobothnia, Central and Northern Ostrobothnia, Far North, Savo, and South-East), appended with the Helsinki slang. There is also a class for dialectal tweets, which are not discernible (NA) because of contrasting or scarce dialectal features.

The original tweets are normalized to a phonetic standard, but word order is not altered, or grammar rules of standard Finnish followed otherwise. This means that for instance standard Finnish possessive suffixes (minun kirja-ni 'my book-my') are not added if they are not present in the original tweet (minun kirja). Likewise, dialect words are not corrected to the standard alternative, even if such words would exist (pruukata > pruukata instead of standard tavata).

Following the rules of the Twitter API, this repository only includes the tweet id's, dialect annotations and normalizations. The original tweets are available for scientific use by request, as granted by the European Union’s Digital Single Market directive (2019/790).

Polarized and nonpolarized Twitter networks from the 2019 Finnish Parliamentary Elections

Polarized and nonpolarized Twitter networks from the 2019 Finnish Parliamentary Elections

This dataset includes 183 Twitter retweet networks collected during the 2019 Finnish Parliamentary Elections.

The first 150 networks are built around single hashtags, such as #police, #nature, and #immigration. The remaining 33 networks are constructed using a combination of hashtags focused on specific topics like climate change and economic policy.

Each filename consists of two parts: the first part indicates whether the network is based on a single hashtag (in lowercase) or a set of hashtags (in uppercase). The second part represents the tweet period.

"p1" corresponds to the pre-election period (March 1 to April 14).

"p2" corresponds to the inter-election period (April 15 to May 26).

"p3" corresponds to the post-election period (May 27 to July 31).

The nodes in the networks represent anonymized Twitter accounts, and directed ties indicate retweet endorsements on specific topics. Each file contains three columns: retweeter, retweeted, and weight.

Please see the references for more details.

Network labels, whether they are labeled as controversial, and whether they are based on single or multiple hashtags, can be found in the "networks_info.csv" file.

Importantly, the dataset does not contain any identifying information or original raw data from the Twitter platform. Anonymization was achieved by shuffling the order of unique nodes across all networks and assigning each node a new identifier (ID). These new IDs were then applied to the edgelists to obtain the anonymized version.

Kindly ensure to reference the original article(s) when utilizing this dataset.

Chen, T. H. Data of the article Analysis of the self-archiving policies of journals in the highest rank category of the Finnish journal classification system within computer science, physics and electronic engineering

The publication forum level three journals representing the three fields of science of computer science, computer science and electrical engineering were identified by utilizing the MinEdu field search filter while searching for the top-ranked journals from the publication channel search (https://www.tsv.fi/julkaisufoorumi/haku.php?lang=en), which is based on Field of Science, Statistics Finland classification (https://www.stat.fi/meta/luokitukset/tieteenala/001-2010/index_en.html). The data were extracted during august 2017 consists of total of 127 individual journals. It is worth noting that circa 30 journals were classified into more than one fields of sciences under scrutiny. First, the journals were divided into representing gold and hybrid model journals. Second, green open access policies of the identified hybrid journals were analyzed using Laakso’s (2014) publisher policy coding framework. Also publishers of the individual journals were identified and subsequently added to the data.

NOTE! The data includes the shortest embargo to either institutional or subject repositories. For example, Elsevier had no embargo to opening accepted manuscripts from arXiv subject repository and thus no embargoes to Elsevier's journals are included within this datasheet.

Data is in CSV. format

Three separate acquisitions for each location were used to detect smallest objects, so that if an object was located at the same place in all images, then it was left unannotated. The data were annotated by two experts.

Product name
<td style="width: 23.0224%; The mask contains classes `38511`, `38512`, `38513` from the layer `vesikivi` in the Topographical database.

4. All predictions that contain a lighthouse or a sector light within the bounding box are discarded. Lighthouses and sector lights come from Väylävirasto data, `ty_njr` class ids are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8

5. All predictions that are wind turbines, found in Topographical database layer `tuulivoimalat`

6. All predictions that are obviously too large are discarded. The prediction is defined to be "too large" if either of its edges is longer than 750 meters.

Model checkpoint for the best performing model is available on Hugging Face platform: https://huggingface.co/mayrajeo/marine-vessel-detection-yolo

Usage
The simplest way to chip the rasters into suitable format and convert the data to COCO or YOLO formats is to use geo2ml. SemFi - Finnish Semantic Database with Syntactic Relations

SemFi is a semantic database for Finnish in which the words are linked to each other by the syntactic relations and their frequency in a big corpus.

SemFi is based on the syntactic bigrams of The Finnish Internet Parsebank provided by Turku University.

The semfi.db file is an SQLite database and it is the one that should be used. The results_json.zip is mainly intended for those who are interested in working with SemUr which is a translated version of SemFi.

The previous version of this dataset has successfully been used in the hard AI task of creating Finnish poetry automatically. That data still powers the computationally creative system, Poem Machine.

More information and an online UI to browse the data is available on https://mikakalevi.com/semfi/.

Cite as

Hämäläinen, Mika.
