Flow direction grid at 1 kilometer resolution for North Slope drainage basins, Alaska

We derived and evaluated a 1 kilometer spatial resolution flow direction grid for the terrestrial drainage of the North Slope of Alaska. The region is resolved by 182,722 grid cells and the associated connectivity. It is bounded by the Brooks Range and Beaufort Sea coast, and extends from the northern Chukchi Sea coast eastward to the small rivers near 140 degrees West. The dataset is provided in raster and tabular format, with the latter including coordinates, river basin identifier, and downstream reach and direction for each grid cell in the region. Over three dozen river basins are identified by name in an associated lookup table. This new mapping resolves the terrestrial drainages for rivers exporting freshwater, nutrients, and other materials to Elson, Simpson, Jago, Kaktovik, and other coastal lagoons at a resolution that captures important processes linked to surface and subsurface hydrological flows. Our analysis suggests that the mapping exhibits notable similarity in basin area boundaries relative to the benchmark USGS National Hydrography Dataset.

The dynamics of bi-directional exchange flows: implication for morphodynamic change within estuaries and sea straits

<p>Environmental and geophysical flows, including dense bottom gravity currents in the ocean and buoyancy-driven exchange flows in marginal seas,<br> are strongly controlled by topographic features.<br> These are known to exert significant influence on both internal mixing and secondary circulations generated by these flows.<br> In such cases, uni-directional or bi-directional exchange flows develop when horizontal density differences<br> and/or pressure gradients are present between adjacent water bodies connected by a submerged channel.<br> The flow dynamics of the dense lower layer depend primarily on the volumetric flux and channel cross-sectional shape,<br> while the stratified interfacial flow mixing characteristics, leading to fluid entrainment/detrainment,<br> are also dependent on the buoyancy flux and motion within the upper (lower density) water mass.<br> For submerged channels that are relatively wide compared to the internal Rossby radius of deformation,<br> Earth rotation effects introduce geostrophic adjustment of these internal fluid motions,<br> which can suppress turbulent mixing generated at the interface and result in the development of Ekman layers that induce secondary,<br> cross-channel circulations, even within straight channels.<br> Moreover, recent studies of dense, gravity currents generated in rotating and non-rotating systems,<br> respectively, indicated that the V-shaped channel topography had a strong influence on both flow distribution<br> and associated interfacial mixing characteristics along the channel.<br> However, such topographic controls on the interfacial mixing and secondary circulations generated by bi-directional exchange flows<br> are not yet fully understood and remain to be investigated thoroughly in the laboratory.<br> Also the effect of mobile bed for bi-directional exchange flows generated in deformable channels along with the physical interactions<br> between the lower dense water flow and the erodible bed sediments<br> will have a strong influence in (re-)shaping the overall channel bed topography (i.e. bed morphodynamics).<br> Consequently, the resulting temporal changes in cross-sectional channel bathymetry (i.e. through erosion and deposition processes)<br> would also be expected to have associated feedbacks on transverse asymmetries in the bi-directional exchange flow structure,<br> as well as on the internal flow stability.</p>

Flow Direction from Land Surface - Parker and Ipswich Watersheds - ASCII Raster File

This datalayer is a gridded flow direction (i.e. river network) of the watersheds draining to Plum Island Sound. The resolution is 120 m x 120 m. This layer gives the direction of each cell to the next downstream grid cell. The gridded river network is used to explore scientific questions regarding the role of different land uses in defining nutrient loading, and the role of river systems in controlling exports to the coastal zone. Provide the flow direction of materials from source areas on land to downstream aquatic systems for general mapping and display, nutrient loading and routing analysis, and aquatic ecosystem modeling.

The role of common ancestry and gene flow in the evolution of human-directed play behavior in dogs

<p><span>Among-population variance of phenotypic traits is of high relevance for understanding evolutionary mechanisms that operate in relatively short timescales, but various sources of non-independence, such as common ancestry and gene flow can hamper the interpretations. In this comparative analysis of 138 dog breeds, we demonstrate how such confounders can independently shape the evolution of a behavioral trait (human-directed play behavior from the Dog Mentality Assessment project). We combined information on genetic relatedness and haplotype sharing to reflect common ancestry and gene flow, respectively, and entered these into a phylogenetic mixed model to partition the among-breed variance of human-directed play behavior while also accounting for within-breed variance. We found that 75% of the among-breed variance was explained by overall genetic relatedness among breeds, while 15% could be attributed to haplotype sharing that arises from gene flow. Therefore, most of the differences in human-directed play behavior among breeds have likely been caused by constraints of common ancestry as a likely consequence of past selection regimes. On the other hand, gene flow caused by crosses among breeds has played a minor, but not negligible role. Our study serves as an example of an analytical approach that can be applied to comparative situations where the effects of shared origin and gene flow require quantification and appropriate statistical control in a within-species/among-population framework. Altogether, our results suggest that the evolutionary history of dog breeds have left remarkable signatures on the among-breed variation of a behavioral phenotype.</span></p>
