Food Web of Sarracenia Purpurea in United States and Canada 1999-2011
How food webs are structured and how their structure and dynamics vary through time and space is a central focus of research in community ecology. We documented structural variation in the aquatic food web inhabiting pitcher-shaped leaves of the carnivorous pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea across the geographic range of the plant (from Florida north to Labrador and west to British Columbia); examined temporal variation in this food web with detailed experiments in Massachusetts and Vermont; experimentally manipulated top-down and bottom-up processes in this food web in Massachusetts; and developed a dynamic simulation model of this food web that incorporates metacommunity dynamics.
Altering pH changes competition dynamics between two crayfish species for both food and shelter resources
As climate change continues, alterations in abiotic variables within habitats will also change. One of the key variables for aquatic systems is pH. We were interested in how lowered pH altered the behavioral characteristics of two keystone species: Faxonius rusticus, a non-native crayfish in the upper midwest and Faxonius virilis, the native crayfish. We dosed size-matched individuals in separate tanks for four days and than placed these individuals in a flow through mesocosm to allow them to compete over food and shelter resources. Behavior was recorded from midnight to 4 am. Pairs of animals were exposed to pH levels varying from ambient (8.4) to 6.4. The experiment took place at the University of Michigan's Biological Station in northern Michigan in the United States.
Fish Food on Floodplain Farm Fields, California Central Valley, Seasons 2019 and 2021
2019 Water Year (October 1, 2018 through September 30, 2019) In the winter and spring of 2018-2019, 5,000 acres of agricultural land in Yolo County, California was intentionally flooded. These “dry-side” rice fields, although on the former floodplain of the Sacramento River, are separated from the fish-bearing Sacramento River (the “wet-side”) by high flood levees. Today, levees cut off 95% of the Central Valley’s floodplains from river channels so that Central Valley aquatic ecosystems no longer recruit floodplain the food web resources needed to support robust aquatic food webs, create fish biomass and sustain abundant fish populations. In this experiment we asked whether floodplain food web resources “grown” in intentionally inundated “dry-side” agricultural fields could be exported back to the river via flood drainage infrastructure. If so, we were interested to know whether those resources could improve juvenile salmon foraging success and increase growth rates. In order to test these questions, we caged fish in the floodplain drainage canal, at the location where the floodplain drainage water entered the river and at locations both up- and downstream. We hypothesized that zooplankton abundance and fish growth rates would be elevated at the managed floodplain outfall location, relative to the upstream location. We measured water quality parameters, zooplankton species assemblage and abundance, and juvenile Chinook salmon growth rates with PIT tagged, hatchery-origin fish confined to enclosures at the study locations. The 5,000 acres of managed floodplain was drained over the coarse of 5 weeks in February and March, 2019 at a maximum rate of 1,000 cfs. The Sacramento River flow during the experiment ranged from 20,000-30,000 cfs. Modeling Foundation Species in Food Webs
Foundation species are basal species that play an important role in determining community composition by physically structuring ecosystems and modulating ecosystem processes. Foundation species largely operate via non-trophic interactions, presenting a challenge to incorporating them into food-web models. Here, we used non-linear, bioenergetic predator-prey models to explore the role of foundation species and their non-trophic effects. We explored four types of models in which the foundation species reduced the metabolic rates of species in a specific trophic position. We examined the outcomes of each of these models for six metabolic rate “treatments” in which the foundation species altered the metabolic rates of associated species by one-tenth to ten times their allometric baseline metabolic rates. For each model simulation, we looked at how foundation species influenced food-web structure during community assembly and the subsequent change in food-web structure when the foundation species was removed. When a foundation species lowered the metabolic rate of only basal species the resultant webs were complex, species-rich, and robust to foundation species removals. On the other hand, when a foundation species lowered the metabolic rate of only consumer species, all species, or no species the resultant webs were species poor and the subsequent removal of the foundation species webs resulted in the further loss of species and complexity. This suggests that in nature we should look for foundation species to predominantly facilitate basal species.
Food Web Isotope Study at North Temperate Lakes LTER 2004 - 2010
Stable isotope ratios (d13C and d15N) were measured in archived scale samples of seven fish species captured in Sparkling Lake over the period 1981 through 2009. Stable isotopes of benthic and pelagic food web end members (macroinvertebrates and zooplankton, respectively) were also measured. Zooplankton were from samples taken in Sparkling Lake, Allequash Lake, and Big Muskellunge Lake. Zoobenthos were from samples taken in Sparkling Lake. Cascade Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER High Frequency Sonde Data from Food Web Resilience Experiment 2008 - 2011
High-frequency sonde data collected from the surface waters of two lakes in Upper Peninsula of Michigan during the summers of 2008-2011. The food web of Peter Lake was slowly transformed by gradual additions of Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) while Paul Lake was an unmanipulated reference. Sonde data were used to calculate resilience indicators to evaluate the stability of the food web and to calculate ecosystem metabolism.

Here, stable isotope data were gathered from across the coastal Arctic to assess how differences in coastal type (i.e., coastscape) and longitudinal region differ across the Arctic. Impacts of invasive species on food web energy pathways and quality, St. Lawrence River, 2018-2021.
This dataset contains field measurements collected between 2018 and 2021 from three fluvial lakes in the Upper St. Lawrence River (Canada), including both invaded systems (with dreissenid mussels and round goby) and uninvaded reference sites. Data include georeferenced sampling information (site, lake, latitude, longitude, month, year), water chemistry (total phosphorus, µg/L; conductivity, µS/cm), and habitat descriptors (substrate). Biological records encompass seston, macroinvertebrates, and fish. Fish data comprise species identity, sex, total length (mm), weight (g), relative weight index (Wr), and detailed fatty acid composition expressed as relative proportions (%) and concentrations (µg/mg), including essential LC-PUFAs (EPA, DHA), n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Stable isotope data are provided, including carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) ratios, C:N ratios, and isotopic baselines from pelagic (δ13Cpel, δ15Npel) and benthic (δ13Cben, δ15Nben) sources. Derived variables, such as pelagic diet proportion and trophic position, were calculated using the two-source mixing model described by Post (2002) (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1890/0012-9658(2002)083[0703:USITET]2.0.CO;2). These data provide a comprehensive resource for examining food web structure, energy pathways, and the ecological impacts of invasive species in large river ecosystems.
A unified dataset of co-located sewage pollution, periphyton, and benthic macroinvertebrate community and food web structure from Lake Baikal (Siberia)
Sewage released from lakeside development can introduce nutrients and micropollutants that can restructure aquatic ecosystems. Lake Baikal, the world's most ancient, biodiverse, and voluminous lake, has been experiencing localized sewage pollution from lakeside settlements. Increasing filamentous algal abundance suggests benthic communities are responding to this localized pollution. We surveyed 40-km of Lake Baikal's southwestern shoreline 19-23 August 2015 for sewage indicators, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and microplastics with co-located periphyton, macroinvertebrate, stable isotope, and fatty acid sampling. Unique identifiers corresponding to sampling locations are retained throughout all data files to facilitate interoperability among the dataset's 150+ variables. The data are structured in a tidy format (a tabular arrangement familiar to limnologists) to encourage future reuse. For Lake Baikal studies, these data can support continued monitoring and research efforts. For global studies of lakes, these data can help characterize sewage prevalence and ecological consequences of anthropogenic disturbance across spatial scales.

Where available, information from a few selected sources on hazardous properties and commercial use has been included as well. Further details on the information sources used are given in the READ ME worksheet of the excel file. The FCCdb intends to provide an overview of the diversity of food contact chemicals and their hazardous properties. Swiss public's acceptance and sustainability perceptions of food produced with chemical, digital and mechanical weed control measures and the influence of information source on technology perception in agriculture
<p><span>This data was obtained from an online survey conducted with the Swiss public from the two biggest language regions (German and French) in Switzerland. The survey was conducted in February 2023. Participants were recruited through a professional panel provider and quotas were used for age, gender and language region. The final sample contained </span><span>542 respondents. </span><span>In the first part of the survey, respondents provided basic sociodemographic information. In the second part, their sustainability perceptions regarding four different weed management practices (full-surface spraying, hoeing machine, spot spraying and precise spraying) were investigated. Respondents were then assigned to one of five information source groups, in which information on a hoeing and a milking robot was presented, using 5 different information sources (male/female farmer, male/female scientist, no source). Technology perception was assessed using several questions and aspects. Finally, respondents answered several questions assessing their attitudes towards the perception of farmers, food technology neophobia, chemophobia and the importance of naturalness. The survey can be used and adapted to different contents, aiming to investigate public perception of smart farming technologies and the influence of information sources on technology perception. </span></p>
Statistical analysis and dataset for: A high-throughput and sensitive method for food preference assays in walking insects
<p>Linked to the journal article published in bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.04.10.588882).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Insects pose significant challenges in both pest management and ecological conservation. Often, the most effective strategy is employing toxicant-laced baits, which must also be designed to specifically attract and be preferred by the targeted species for optimal species-specific effectiveness. However, traditional methods for measuring bait preference are either non-comparative, meaning that most animals only ever taste one bait, or suffer from methodological or conceptual limitations. Here we demonstrate the value of direct comparison food preference assays using the invasive and pest ant <em>Linepithema humile </em>as a model. We compare the food preference sensitivity of non-comparative (one visit to a food source) and sequential comparative (visiting one type of food then another) assays at detecting low levels of aversive quinine in sucrose solution. We then introduce and test a novel dual-choice feeder method for simultaneous comparative evaluation of bait preferences, testing its effectiveness in discerning between foods with varying quinine or sucrose levels. While the non-sequential assay could not detect aversion to 1.25mM quinine in 1M sucrose, the sequential comparative approach detected aversion to quinine levels as low as 0.94mM. The novel dual feeder method approach could detect aversion to quinine levels as low as 0.31mM, and also preference for 1M sucrose over 0.75M sucrose. The dual-feeder method, combines the sensitivity of comparative evaluation with high throughput, ease of use, and avoidance of interpretational issues. This innovative approach offers a promising tool for rapid and effective testing of bait solutions, contributing to the development of targeted control strategies. Moreover, the method can be easily modified for application to a wide range of walking insects, such as cockroaches, crickets, and beetles.</p>

<p>Input data and baseline outputs for the Agrisolar Food, Energy, Water, and economic Lifecycle Scenario (FEWLS) Tool. In general, this code takes in a ground-mounted solar PV shape file (with some auxiliary information) and generates user set lifespan predictions for food (Calorie), energy (GWh), water (m3), and economic (USD) effects due to offsetting agricultural land with solar PV energy generation. </p>
