Data for 'Local food crop production can fulfil demand for less than one-third of the population'

This dataset is supplement to the following publication (please cite that when using the data):

Kinnunen et al. 2020. Local food crop production can fulfil demand for less than one-third of the population. Nature Food 1: 229–237. http://doi.org/10.1038/s43016-020-0060-7

Data description

Distance to food: Globally optimized distance between crop production and consumption. The optimization creates a theoretical food allocation set-up that minimizes travel time cost from crop production to consumption. Data is in two formats: NetCDF (dist_food_netcdf.zip) and multi-band geotiff (dist_food_tif.zip).

The data includes:

baseline scenario (dist_food_baseline.nc / .tif)

and three other scenarios where food availability is changed by

decreasing food waste by half (dist_food_halfLoss.nc / .tif)

halving the yield gap (dist_food_halfYieldGap.nc / .tif)

both of these measures together (dist_food_halfLoss_halfYielGap.nc / .tif)

The data covers six crop functional types: maize, pulses, rice, temperate cereals, tropical cereals and tropical roots

Dataset specifications:

spatial extent: -180, 180, -90, 90 (xmin, xmax, ymin, ymax)

spatial resolution: 0.5 degrees

projection: long/lat WGS84

layers: 1: maize, 2: pulses, 3: rice, 4: temp_cereals, 5: trop_cereals, 6: trop_roots

no data value: -999

unit: km

Foodsheds: The data contains global foodsheds which are areas that are connected by food flows between raster cells. The food flows are from a theoretical food allocation set-up that minimizes travel time cost from crop production to consumption. In addition to normal foodsheds (values>0), there are two special cases: ridge-cells (value: -99) and unconnected single cells (value: -50). Ridge-cells are raster cells connected to multiple foodsheds, while being able to satisfy their own demand locally. Unconnected single cells are not connected to any other foodshed. Each positivie value is a crop specific id, signifying a connected foodshed area.

Data is in two formats: NetCDF (foodsheds_netcdf.zip) and multi-band geotiff (foodsheds_tif.zip).

The data includes:

baseline scenario (foodsheds_baseline.nc / .tif)

and three other scenarios where food availability is changed by

decreasing food waste by half (foodsheds_halfLoss.nc / .tif)

halving the yield gap (foodsheds_halfYieldGap.nc / .tif)

both of these measures together (foodsheds_halfLoss_halfYielGap.nc / .tif)

The data covers six crop functional types: maize, pulses, rice, temperate cereals, tropical cereals and tropical roots

Dataset specifications:

spatial extent: -180, 180, -90, 90 (xmin, xmax, ymin, ymax)

spatial resolution: 0.5 degrees

projection: long/lat WGS84

layers: 1: maize, 2: pulses, 3: rice, 4: temp_cereals, 5: trop_cereals, 6: trop_roots

no data value: -999

unit: -

Van Dijk et al. (2021), A meta-analysis of projected global food demand and population at risk of hunger for the period 2010–2050, data and scripts

This repository contains all data and R scripts to reproduce the figures in Van Dijk et al. (2021), A meta-analysis of global food demand and population at risk of hunger projections for the period 2010-2050, Nature Food. More specifically, it includes two databases: (1) A database with standardized information to describe the characteristics of 57 studies that were identified by the systematic literature review and (2) The Global Food Security Projections Database v1.0.1 with harmonized projections for three global food security indicators: food consumption in kcal per capita and total kcal, and population at risk of hunger. The database also includes projections for total global population that are required to derive the global food security indicators.

The two scripts (nf_figures.r and nf_meta_regression.r) can be used to reproduce the figures and tables in the main paper and the supplementary information. Please start with the first script, which sources the second script.

This is the first version of the Global Food Projections Database. We expect to update the data, including additional studies and variables in the future. For issues and suggestions, please contact michiel.vandijk@wur.nl.

Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus – Modelling a Demand Side Management Approach and Application to a Microgrid Farm in Morocco Dataset

Here you can find the official data used for the publication "Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus – Modelling a Demand Side Management Approach and Application to a Microgrid Farm in Morocco"

If you want to run the model, please update line 11 in the run.jl file, to select the dataset from the scenario you want to look at. It is also recommended to change the result path, to a directory that corresponts to the current model run in order to find the results files quicker.

To create a new plot a file called newPlot.jl can be found, that already take care of most data handling, only lines 136 and 141 need to be changed, in order to read in the result files of the results you want to investigate.

AWESOME Water and food demand (WATNEEDS crop model)

In this record, we provide the results in terms of crop water requirements, calculated by the hydrological model WATNEEDS, and crop harvested area under the implemented crop replacement scenarios, that have been developed to optimize water use, crop production and agricultural value in present and future climate scenarios in the Nile Basin. These scenarios were designed, modeled and generated for the deliverable D2.3 of AWESOME WP2: Dynamic and spatially distributed crop water use modeling.

The analyses have been conducted at the mesoscale, with a specific focus has been reserved for Egypt, as it is particularly relevant for the AWESOME project because the demo sites of the innovative technologies are being build there. In addition, we investigated present and future reallocation scenarios also for Ethiopia and Sudan, to cover the main cropland along the Nile River Basin.

A baseline scenario is evaluated to quantify blue and green crop water requirements for the current climate conditions and current crop distribution (averaged for the period 2011-2016). Future scenarios have been implemented using future climatic data for the average period around year 2050 (2048-2052) and year 2100 (2096-2100) under three different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs): RCP 4.5, RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5.

This record contains:

- The Deliverable D2.3, where the optimization model and the calculation of the crop water requirements under different climatic scenarios are presented.

- The results for each implemented scenario, in terms of harvested area and irrigation water consumption (.tif files and excel files), for the Nile River Basin and at the national level for each focus country (Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt).

- Description of the data (excel file and pdf file)
