Ontogenetic variation in the marine foraging of Atlantic salmon functionally links genomic diversity with a major life history polymorphism

<p>The ecological role of heritable phenotypic variation in free-living populations remains largely unknown. Knowledge of the genetic basis of functional ecological processes can link genomic and phenotypic diversity, providing insight into polymorphism evolution and how populations respond to environmental change. By quantifying the marine diet, of sub-adult Atlantic salmon, we assessed how foraging behavior changes along the ontogeny, and in relation to genetic variation in two loci with major effect on age-at-maturity (<em>six6</em> and <em>vgll3</em>). We used a two-component, zero-inflated negative binomial model to simultaneously quantify foraging frequency (zero-inflation components) and foraging outcome (count component), separately for fish and crustaceans in the diet. We found that older salmon forage for both prey types more actively (as evidenced by increased foraging frequency), but with a decreased efficiency (as evidenced by fewer prey items in the diet), suggesting an age-dependent shift in foraging dynamics. The <em>vgll3</em> locus was linked to age-dependent changes in foraging behavior: younger salmon with <em>vgll3<sup>LL</sup></em> (the genotype associated with late maturation) tend to forage crustaceans more often than those with <em>vgll3<sup>EE</sup></em> (the<em> </em>genotype associated with early maturation), while the pattern was reversed in older salmon. <em>Vgll3<sup> LL</sup></em> genotype was also linked to marginal increase in fish acquisition especially in younger salmon, while <em>six6</em> was not a factor explaining the diet variation. Our results suggest a functional role for variation in marine feeding behavior linking genomic diversity at <em>vgll3</em> with age-at-maturity among salmon, with potential age-dependent trade-offs maintaining the genetic variation. A shared genetic basis between dietary ecology and age-at-maturity likely subjects Atlantic salmon populations to evolution induced by bottom-up changes in marine productivity.</p>

Polymorphisms in genes related to inflammation and endothelial function in the high-risk stroke population

<p><span><strong>Aim</strong>:</span><span> T</span><span>o investigate </span><span>incidence of ischemic stroke and other vascular events during a 4.7-year follow-up </span><span>in the </span><span>high-risk stroke population</span><span>, and to identify </span><span>the associations of </span><span>the 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)</span> <span>in genes related to inflammation and endothelial function</span><span> and </span><span>interaction among these</span> <span>SNPs</span><span> with outcomes. </span><span> </span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>: </span><span>According to </span><span>the China National Stroke Screening Survey programme, we performed this multi-center </span><span>community</span><span>-based sectional survey and prospective cohort</span> <span>study in the Sichuan of southwestern China </span><span>from May 2015 to January 2020</span><span>. Eight communities were randomly selected in </span><span>Sichuan, </span><span>and the </span><span>residents in each community volunteered to participate in a face-to-face survey. </span><span>The 19 SNPs</span><span> in </span><span>genes related to </span><span>endothelial function and inflammation </span><span>were measured in </span><span>the high-risk stroke population</span><span>. </span><span>All subjects in high-risk stroke populations were followed-up for 4.7 years after the face-to-face survey. The primary outcome was a new ischemic stroke; the secondary outcome was a composite of new vascular events. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>A total of</span><span> 2893 high-risk stroke population, </span><span>2698 (93.3%) completed a 4.7-year follow-up. Outcomes occurred in 192 (7.1%) subjects (</span><span>118 [4.4%] new </span><span>ischemic stroke</span><span>, 24 [0.9%] </span><span>hemorrhagic stroke, </span><span>53 [2.0%] </span><span>myocardial infarction</span><span>, and 33[1.2%]</span><span> death) in </span><span>the </span><span>2698</span><span> high-risk stroke population. </span><span>There were significant differences in </span><span>genotype distribution</span> <span>of</span><span> <em>TNF</em></span><span> rs3093662,</span><span> <em>IL6R</em> rs4845625 and <em>TLR4</em> rs752998</span> <span>between s</span><span>ubjects with and without outcomes</span><span> by </span><span>univariate analyses. </span><span>Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) </span><span>analysis showed that </span><span>there was a significant gene-gene interaction among the </span><span>19 SNPs, the best model for outcomes was interaction among </span><em><span>IL6R</span></em><span> rs4845625, </span><span><em>TLR4</em> </span><span>rs1927911 and</span> <em><span>HABP2</span></em><span> rs932650</span> <span>(<em>P</em> = </span><span>0.004</span><span>).</span><span> The high-risk </span><span>interactive genotypes</span><span> among the 3 SNPs were independently associated with a higher risk for new ischemic stroke </span><span> (OR = 2.187, 95% CI: 1.256–5.374, <em>P</em></span>&lt;<span>0.001</span><span>) </span><span>and total vascular events </span><span>(OR = 2.382, 95% CI: 1.423–5.894, <em>P</em></span>&lt;<span>0.001</span><span>) </span><span>after adjustment with covariates. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>: </span><span>The </span><span>incidence of ischemic stroke and other vascular events was </span><span>found to be very high in the </span><span>high-risk stroke population. </span><span>There were associations of specific SNPs</span> <span>in genes related to inflammation and endothelial function</span><span> with outcomes. The high-risk </span><span>interactive genotypes among </span><em><span>IL6R</span></em><span> rs4845625, </span><span><em>TLR4</em> </span><span>rs1927911 and</span> <em><span>HABP2</span></em><span> rs932650 were in</span><span>dependently associated with a higher risk </span><span>for </span><span>new ischemic stroke and other vascular events.</span><span> These findings are expected to</span> <span>provide</span> <span>new strategies for prevention of </span><span>ischemic stroke and other vascular events.</span> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Effective coordination of group actions underlies the success of group-living organisms. Recent studies of animal personality have shown that groups composed of individuals with different behavioral propensities can outperform uniform groups in a range of different tasks, but we have only a rudimentary understanding of how differences in individual behavior influence the behavior of the group as a whole. In this study, we use natural variation in behavioral propensity among morphologically distinct worker castes of the small carpenter ant <em>Camponotus yamaokai</em> to shed new light on this. Iterative testing indicated that ants displayed consistent behavioral differences among individuals and between castes, with major workers exhibiting a lower exploratory tendency than minors. By constructing groups of different caste composition and quantifying their performance in the task of colony emigration, we show that group performance is an asymmetric humped function of caste ratio, with optimal performance achieved by groups with natural caste ratios. Using a simulation model based on our empirical data, we demonstrate that inter-individual differences in social attraction and exploratory tendency are sufficient to explain the observed patterns. Our results provide new insights into how group performance in collective tasks can vary with group composition. </span></p>

Most heterostylous plants possess a reciprocal arrangement of stigmas and anthers (reciprocal herkogamy), heteromorphic self-incompatibility and ancillary polymorphisms of pollen and stigmas. The topographical complementarity hypothesis proposes that ancillary polymorphisms function in the rejection of incompatible pollen thus promoting disassortative pollination. Here, we test this hypothesis by investigating patterns of pollen transfer and capture in populations of dimorphic Armeria maritima and A. pubigera and distylous Limonium vulgare (Plumbaginaceae), and by studying pollen adherence and germination patterns in A. maritima following controlled hand-pollinations. Armeria lacks reciprocal herkogamy allowing the evaluation of the extent to which ancillary polymorphisms affect the composition of pollen loads. We compared the amounts of compatible and incompatible pollen on stigmas in natural populations and calculated the proficiencies of pollen transfer for each mating type. We detected disassortative pollination in each species, and mating types did not differ in compatible pollen capture, although cob stigmas captured more incompatible pollen. Controlled hand-pollinations revealed the failure of incompatible pollen to adhere and germinate on stigmas. Our results provided evidence that, while structural in nature, pollen-stigma dimorphisms are tightly associated with heteromorphic incompatibility and likely function to promote disassortative pollination in the absence of reciprocal herkogamy.
