Processed glider data: 9 months of hydrographic and ADCP observations in the Gulf of Oman.

Dataset collected as part of the ONR Global project "Shelf slope dyanmics in the Sea of Oman: How submesoscale processes control food and water security". Glider, turbulence and ADCP datasets used in the manuscript "Storm-induced turbulence alters shelf sea vertical fluxes"

<p>Measurements of shear microstructure, temperature, conductivity, and fluorescence of chlorophyll-a of a stratified water column were taken in the German Bight of the North Sea in Summer 2014. During the measurement period, a storm entered the study region and mixed the water column thoroughly, modifying water column dynamics. The measured quantities were used to estimate turbulence, stratification, mixing, water column stability and changes in the signal of chlorophyll-a.</p>

Observations of Autumnal Cooling in a Large Estuary: The Glider Data from Long Island Sound in 2014

<p>This data file is a component of the data used in a paper to appear in the Journal of Geophysical Research in 2023 entitled &quot;Observations of Autumnal Cooling in a Large Estuary&quot; by Amin Ilia, Grant McCardell, Kay Howard-Strobel, and James O&#39;Donnell.&nbsp; The data file contains the measurements from a Slocum Glider (V1) from Webb Research used in the paper. The data is in&nbsp;a MATLAB binary (.mat) file as a structure variable with a field&nbsp;MetaData containing&nbsp;some notes, and data in&nbsp;<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; SampleTimeEST- the date and time of the sample (EST) in MATLAB&#39;s datenum() format<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; Pressure_dBar - the pressure (or&nbsp;equivalently depth in m) that the sample was acquired&nbsp;<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; Temperature_C - the water temperature in Celcius<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; PracticalSalinty - the practical salinty<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; LatitudeDeg- the latitude of the sampling location (deg)<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; LongitudeDeg - the longitude of the sampling location (deg east)</p> <p>The paper&#39;s abstract is:&nbsp;</p> <p>Long Island Sound (LIS) is a large estuary on the eastern United States coast. Seasonal variations&nbsp;<br> in solar insolation and wind create an annual water temperature cycle that impacts circulation&nbsp;<br> and biological processes. The waters warm from March-February until August-October and then&nbsp;<br> begins to cool. Ship surveys show that the vertical temperature structure becomes uniform during&nbsp;<br> this season when the area experiences low air temperatures and high winds. However, there have&nbsp;<br> been no observations that resolve the temporal evolution of the vertical structure of temperature&nbsp;<br> during these cooling periods because conditions inhibit ship operations. We report glider&nbsp;<br> measurements of the vertical structure of water temperatures and salinities from October 22 to&nbsp;<br> November 4, 2014, in eastern LIS. We find that 20m of water can cool at approximately 0.5&nbsp;<br> C/day intervals of cold air and strong winds. We use the data to estimate heat content tendencies&nbsp;<br> and infer surface fluxes. We also estimate the surface heat fluxes using buoy-mounted&nbsp;<br> instruments and the COARE 3.0/3.5 formulae and show they are consistent. Using the buoy&nbsp;<br> fluxes and the products of an operation regional model, we show the agreement with the heat&nbsp;<br> budget fluxes is best when the closest buoy and the model results are used. This suggests that&nbsp;<br> resolving the temporally and spatially structure of the wind field is crucial to the accurate&nbsp;<br> simulation of the temperature variability in LIS. These intervals of very rapid cooling can lead to&nbsp;<br> significant density gradients between LIS and the shallow bays and marshes that surround it.</p>

Ocean Microstructure measurements using a Slocum glider in the Southern Ocean Marginal Ice Zone

<p>Ocean microstructure data were collected using a turbulence package mounted on a Slocum and deployed from RV SA Agulhas II in the North Eastern Weddell Sea, [60S; 0E], from December 2019 to February 2020. Observations conducted by the Southern Ocean Carbon-Climate Observatory, Smart Places, CSIR, for the project &quot;Contemporary and Future Drivers of CO2 and Heat in the Southern Ocean&quot; funded by NRF-SANAP (SNA170522231782, SANAP200324510487) and in collaboration with Polar Gliders, University of Gothenburg (Project: &quot;Robotic Observations and Modelling of the Marginal Ice Zone&quot; funded by the Wallenberg Academy Fellowship (WAF 2015.0186). Turbulence data were collected using a Rockland Scientific MicroRider mounted on the SLOCUM. Microshear was measured using two airfoil shear probes oriented orthogonally to each other. The measurements are from a 47 days of dive and climb profiles, with a maximum depth of 500 m. The dataset is processed and prepared following the SCOR Working Group ATOMIX guidelines and recommendations. The provided file includes daily arithmetic means of the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy derived from the microrider measurements. Temperature, salinity, latitude and longitude were taken from the Slocum glider.</p>

Assessing controls on cross-shelf phytoplankton and suspended particle distributions using repeated bio-optical glider surveys

The data were collected from an oceanographic glider in the coastal Santa Barbara Chanel, CA during six deployments from March 2012 to June 2013. Data includes 404 cross-shelf sections of temperature (C), salinity (PSU), colored dissolved organic material (CDOM, volts; dark-corrected), particulate backscatter (bbp at 650nm, m-1) and Chlorophyll fluorescence (chl-fl, volts; dark-corrected). Each section is 35x40 in size (35 depth measurements x 40 latitude measurements about 100m apart). They were obtained from kriging of raw sections every 100m in latitude and 2m in depth. Longitude is constant at -119 44.824. Matlab files are indexed to each of the glider sections (1-404). Data are described in Hendrikx Freitas, F., D. A. Siegel, L. Washburn, S. Halewood and E. Stassinos. 2016. Assessing controls on cross-shelf phytoplankton and suspended particle distributions using repeated bio-optical glider surveys. Journal of Geophysical Research - Oceans, 121: 7776-7794. Doi: 10.1002/2016JC011781 Definition of the variables in the matlab file: Times are in matlab time. Gtime is the average timestamp of each glider section (first column = time; second column = mission number it belongs to). Gdurationanddirection is useful to know how long (in time) each section actually is, and what direction it started with (inshore-offshore or offshore-inshore). Gvel are the depth-averaged velocities obtained from the glider (columns are time, lat, lon, alongshore component of currents, cross-shore component of currents, mission number). Chl in mg/m3 = 0.0159*(dark corrected chl counts)-0.0165); N=9; r=0.82 (p-value<0.05). bbp in 1/m units and it was the optical backscatter data that were converted to particulate backscattering following standard algorithms.

Evaluation of lethal control of introduced sugar gliders

<p>Lethal control of invasive mammalian predators can be controversial and is rarely a 'silver bullet' for conservation problems. Evaluating the efficacy of lethal control is important for demonstrating the benefits to threatened species are real and detecting unexpected perverse outcomes. We implemented a pilot study to evaluate if lethal control of introduced sugar gliders Petaurus breviceps can reduce the rate of nest predation on Tasmanian hollow nesting birds including swift parrots (Lathamus discolor). Using a before-after-control-impact design, we implemented a lethal control treatment whereby we attempted to remove sugar gliders from three treatment sites. In each time period across sites we monitored quail eggs in nest boxes to record predation, and used cameras to detect sugar gliders.We caught nine sugar gliders over three treatment sites. The model best supported by the data indicated an effect of site x time period on both egg survival and the rate of glider detection on cameras. There was no support for an effect of treatment on our data. We also recorded predation of a real swift parrot nest by sugar gliders at a treatment site where we recorded no predation of quail eggs. Our pilot study shows that at small scales, intensive lethal control of gliders yields low capture rates and no discernible effect on the metrics we measured. We conclude that alternative approaches to controlling the impact of sugar gliders, such as habitat protection, are critical in this study system before lethal control is widely implemented as a management tool.</p>

<p>These are the data used in the analysis and creation of figures in du Plessis et al. 2022: <em>The daily-resolved Southern Ocean mixed layer: regional contrasts assessed using glider observations</em> in support of open-code, transparency, and repeatability.</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>Water mass transformation in the Southern Ocean is vital for driving the large-scale overturning circulation, which transports heat from the surface to the ocean interior. Using profiling gliders, this study investigates the role of summertime buoyancy forcing and wind-driven processes on the intraseasonal (1-10 days) mixed layer thermohaline variability in three Southern Ocean regions southwest of Africa important for water mass transformation - the Subantarctic Zone (SAZ), Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) and Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ). At intraseasonal time scales, heat flux was shown as the main driver of buoyancy gain in all regions. In the SAZ and MIZ, shallow mixed layers and strong stratification enhanced mixed layer buoyancy gain by trapping incoming heat, while buoyancy loss resulted primarily from the entrainment of cold, salty water from below. In the PFZ, rapid mixing linked to Southern Ocean storms set persistently deep mixed layers and suppressed mixed layer intraseasonal (1-10 days) thermohaline variability. In the polar regions, lateral stirring of meltwater from seasonal sea-ice melt dominated daily mixed layer salinity variability. We propose that these meltwater fronts are advected to the PFZ during late summer, indicating the potential for seasonal sea-ice freshwater to impact a region where the upwelling limb of overturning circulation reaches the surface. Acoustic Current Profiler data from Multi-Year (2020-2022) Autonomous Underwater Glider Surveys in the Anegada Passage
