Dataset: Open access potential and uptake in the context of Plan S - a partial gap analysis

<p>Dataset belonging to the report:&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3543000">Open access potential and uptake &nbsp;in the context of Plan S &nbsp;- a partial gap analysis</a></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>On the report:&nbsp;</p> <p>The analysis presented in the&nbsp;report, carried out by Utrecht University Library, aims to provide cOAlition S, an international group of research funding organizations, with initial quantitative and descriptive data on the availability and usage of various open access options in different fields and subdisciplines, and, as far as possible, their compliance with Plan S requirements.</p> <p>Plan S, launched in September 2018, aims to accelerate a transition to full and immediate Open Access. In the guidance to implementation, released in November 2018 and updated in May 2019, a gap analysis of Open Access journals/platforms was announced. Its goal was to inform Coalition S funders on the Open Access options per field and identify fields where there is a need to increase the share of Open Access journals/platforms.&nbsp;</p> <p>The report&nbsp;should be seen as a first step: an exploration in methodology as much as in results. Subsequent interpretation (e.g. on fields where funder investment/action is needed) and decisions on next steps (e.g. on more complete and longitudinal monitoring of Plan S-compliant venues) is intentionally left to cOAlition S and its members.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>This work was commissioned on behalf of cOAlition S by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), a member of cOAlition S. Mining the health disparities and minority health bibliome: A computational scoping review and gap analysis of 200,000+ articles

<p>Without comprehensive examination of available literature on health disparities and minority health (HDMH), the field is left vulnerable to disproportionately focus on specific populations or conditions, curtailing our ability to fully advance health equity. Using scalable open-source methods, we conducted a computational scoping review of more than 200,000 articles to investigate major populations, conditions, and themes in the literature as well as notable gaps. We also compared trends in studied conditions to their relative prevalence in the general population using insurance claims (42 million Americans). HDMH publications represent 1% of articles in MEDLINE. Most studies are observational in nature, though randomized trial reporting has increased five-fold in the last twenty years. Half of all HDMH articles concentrate on only three disease groups (cancer, mental health, endocrine/metabolic disorders), while hearing, vision, and skin-related conditions are among the least well-represented despite substantial prevalence. To support further investigation, we also present HDMH Monitor, an interactive dashboard and repository generated from the HDMH bibliome.</p>

SUSTRACK - Gap Analysis

<p><span>The goal of achieving net-zero emissions European economy by 2050 demands a shift from linear, fossil-based systems to circular, bio-based systems. This transition is vital for meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and reconciling environmental protection with sustainable growth. However, the complexity of the transition relies on societal transformations, cutting-edge technologies, and multi-actor processes, requiring a new economic framework and policy priorities that align with the European Green Deal.</span></p> <p><span>Despite the challenges and trade-offs, the transition to a circular bio-based economy can bring multiple positive impacts, including economic, environmental, and social benefits. This transition requires effective strategies and policies, as well as collaboration among policymakers, educational institutions, and public opinion leaders to promote sustainable development.</span></p> <p><span>This dataset is suplementary to the publication of SUSTRACK project: D1.1 - Report on Literature Gaps and Trade Offs.</span></p>

Meta-analysis of Antarctic phylogeography reveals strong sampling bias and critical knowledge gaps

<p>Much of Antarctica's highly endemic terrestrial biodiversity is found in small ice-free patches. Substantial genetic differentiation has been detected among populations across spatial scales. Sampling is, however, often restricted to commonly-accessed sites, and we therefore lack a comprehensive understanding of broad-scale biogeographic patterns, which could impede forecasts of the nature and impacts of future change. Here, we present a synthesis of published genetic studies across terrestrial Antarctica and the broader Antarctic region, aiming to identify current biogeographic patterns, environmental drivers of diversity, and future research priorities. A database of all published genetic research from terrestrial fauna and flora (excl. microbes) across the Antarctic region was constructed. This database was then filtered to focus on the most well-represented taxa and markers (mitochondrial COI for fauna, and nuclear ITS for flora). The final dataset comprised 7222 records, spanning 153 studies of 335 different species. There was strong taxonomic bias towards flowering plants (52% of all floral data sets) and springtails (54% of all faunal data sets), and geographic bias towards the Antarctic Peninsula and Victoria Land. Recent connectivity between the Antarctic continent and neighbouring landmasses, such as South America and the Southern Ocean Islands (SOIs), was inferred for some groups, but patterns observed for most taxa were strongly influenced by sampling biases. Above-ground wind speed and habitat heterogeneity were positively correlated with genetic diversity indices overall, though environment was a generally poor predictor of genetic diversity. The low resolution and variable coverage of data may also have reduced the power of our comparative inferences. In the future, higher-resolution data, such as genomic SNPs and environmental modelling, alongside targeting sampling of remote sites and under-sampled taxa, will address current knowledge gaps and greatly advance our understanding of evolutionary processes across the Antarctic region.</p>

A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Approaches to Gap Filling Meteorological Datasets (Results Only)

<p>This dataset contains the results from our evaluation of methodologies for filling gaps in meterological data. Variables were chosen to represent a standard set of measurements for purposes typically performed using Weather Stations installed in urban and rural areas.&nbsp;There are 4 dimensions by which we measure and validate each of the gap filling models across a large set of experimental configurations: meteorological variables <strong>TargetVar </strong>(dewpoint, humidity, leaf wetness, temp); <strong>feature_set</strong> (AWS, AWS-ERA5, ERA5, ERA5_Debias, Spatial); 3 types of machine learning algorithms <strong>ML</strong> (linear regression, random forests, LightGBM) combined with 2 non-ML algorithms; and <strong>gap_length</strong>: 1, 4, 36 and 288. &nbsp;A total of 1,720 experiments were conducted: 1,440 machine learning experiments; 160 using a spatial algorithm and 120 experiments using ERA5. For the 3 machine learning experiments, the average result was selected for each of 10 sites for 4 gap &nbsp;sizes (40 results) with the 3 ML models using 3 different feature sets (120 results).</p> <p>Data is provided in both CSV format and as a MySQL dump.</p> <p>Resultsets are accompanied with the SQL expression used to generate the result.</p>

Tropical bat ectoparasitism in continuous versus fragmented forests: A gap analysis and preliminary meta-analysis

<p><span>Tropical regions are experiencing rapid rates of forest fragmentation, which can have several effects on wildlife, including altered parasite dynamics. Bats are a useful host group to consider these effects of fragmentation because they are abundant in the tropics, serve important ecological roles, and harbour many parasites. Nevertheless, research on the effects of fragmentation on bat ectoparasites is still limited. To help guide ongoing and future research efforts, this study had two objectives: (1) conduct a gap analysis to characterize the state of currently available research on fragmentation effects on bat ectoparasites, and (2) conduct a preliminary meta-analysis to identify current trends. We systematically highlighted several research gaps: studies comparing the effects of fragmented versus continuous forests on ectoparasites are limited and have primarily been conducted in the Neotropics, with a focus on bats in the superfamily Noctilionidea (especially frugivorous phyllostomids). Our preliminary meta-analysis suggested that ectoparasite prevalence (but not the mean or variance in intensity) was higher in fragments than in continuous forests. Moreover, prevalence increased with increasing roost duration, and mean intensity was higher for bats with higher wing aspect ratios. Intensity variance was affected by an interaction between forest type and wing aspect ratio, such that variance increased for bats with high wing aspect ratios in continuous forests but decreased in fragments. These results suggest that fragmentation can shape aspects of bat ectoparasitism and could have implications for the ecology, health, and conservation of bats in fragmented landscapes. However, existing research gaps could bias our current understanding of habitat change and bat health, and future research should thus investigate these effects in the Paleotropics and with other bat families. </span><span><br></span></p>
