Leaf litter collected using baskets over the middle of the channel in Prieta arm B and Gatos

This is a long-term monitoring of leaf litter inputs into Prieta Stream, arm B, and into the Gatos stream. The monitoring is conducted using litter traps similar tho those used in other LTER project. Baskets are suspended over the channel and are emptied every other week. All material is dried and identified. Support for this work was provided by grants BSR-8811902, DEB-9411973, DEB-9705814 , DEB-0080538, DEB-0218039 , DEB-0620910 , DEB-1239764, DEB-1546686, and DEB-1831952 from the National Science Foundation to the University of Puerto Rico as part of the Luquillo Long-Term Ecological Research Program. UTILIZAÇÃO DO DISPOSITIVO NIO™ PARA OBTENÇÃO DE ACESSO INTRAÓSSEO EM CÃES E GATOS – ANÁLISE DE VIABILIDADE E SEGURANÇA

<p>A via intraóssea (IO) representa uma alternativa crucial de acesso vascular em pequenos animais, aplicável especialmente em situações emergenciais ou quando a obtenção de uma via venosa periférica se mostra inviável. A IO tem demonstrado ser uma opção eficaz e segura para procedimentos em pequenos animais, com menor propensão a complicações quando comparada a outras vias de acesso vascular durante cenários de emergência. Este estudo teve como objetivo principal a avaliação do dispositivo NIO quanto ao acesso intraósseo em cadáveres, com propósito de destacar as vantagens e desvantagens dessa ferramenta na prática da medicina veterinária intensiva, sobretudo como alternativa viável diante dos desafios na obtenção de vias periféricas. Os resultados obtidos foram notáveis na investigação da administração de fluidos cristaloides em diferentes regiões anatômicas, com destaque para o úmero e a tíbia como localizações preferenciais para tal procedimento. Adicionalmente, constatou-se uma discrepância na taxa de administração de cristaloides entre essas duas áreas: a média de gotejamento por minuto foi de 105 gotas/min no úmero, em contrapartida às 142 gotas/min na tíbia. Esses achados reforçam a eficácia e a rapidez da administração de cristaloides no úmero, o que o torna uma perspectiva promissora no contexto clínico. Com base nesses resultados, o dispositivo NIO se destaca como uma ferramenta valiosa para a obtenção de acesso intraósseo em cenários desafiadores, oferecendo benefícios significativos no tratamento de emergências médicas em cães e gatos.</p>
