Common database for gender equality audit (GEA)

These datasets were produced under ATHENA WP2, which collected data to analyze the situation on gender equality (GE) at each consortium organization implementing a gender equality plan (GEP). The organizational data were collected through quantitative and qualitative indicators, which were clustered in 6 gender dimensions:

The pool of graduate talents

Gender balance in research

Gender balanced career advancement

Gender balance in decision making

Gender balanced working conditions

Gender balance in research outputs

The indicators framework and methodology for the GEA was developed by the Institute for Social Communication Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (UVSK SAV) team in cooperation with the University of Bucharest (UB) and University Jana Kochanowskiego in Kielce (UJK) teams. The ATHENA institutions started the process of data collection in March 2021. Although the project consortium consists of various types of research organisations, the indicators reflect the RPO/HEI organisation’s circumstances primarily, as this type prevails among the partners. However, other types of organisation have been encouraged to collect the indicators adjusted to their conditions or indicate that the calculation of the indicators was not applicable (n/a).

All the information collected was reported in the deliverable D2.1, contributing to provide solid basis on the current status of GE at organizational level for the development and implementation of the ATHENA GEPs.

Gender equality and hiring process in oil mining companies: A case of Lokichar in Turkana, Kenya

This paper centers on the findings of a study done by the authors of this paper in 2019 titled Change in Gender Roles as a Factor in Gender Participation and Empowerment in the Oil Mining Industry: A Case of Lokichar, Kenya. One of the objectives; determining whether the oil mining companies promotes gender equity in Lokichar is explored. The null hypothesis testing on whether there is no relationship between equal hiring and equal opportunity for men and women to work in mining activities is discussed. The data was collected from a sample of three hundred (300) respondents selected through systematic random and purposive sampling methods. The studies target group was the active labour force aged between 15 to 64 years. Those who retired from work were also targeted. Two levels of analysis were adopted: Univariate and Bivariate. Chi-square was used to test the hypotheses. Major finding indicates that there is a relationship between equal hiring and equal opportunity for men and women to work in mining activities. The paper recommends that issues like compensation, decision making, royalty sharing, power relations are well spelt in policies like the Mining Bill (2014) to ensure gender mainstreaming and no ambiguity in interpretation.

New Challenges for Gender Equality in AI: Navigating the Ethical and Social Implications.- 1st SPATIAL podcast episode

Gender bias can penetrate AI systems through multiple avenues, posing a significant challenge in ensuring fair and equitable outcomes. From historical biases ingrained in the data to biased data selection methods, these factors contribute to biased AI systems. Recognizing the implications of gender bias in AI is crucial, as it impacts various domains such as social media advertising, job recruitment, smart devices, facial recognition, and voice recognition. To strive for equity, it is essential to understand the interconnectedness of different social and political identities, emphasizing intersectionality and the need to avoid generalizing experiences.

In the first episode of the SPATIAL podcast, we had the privilege of conversing with Marcus Westberg, postdoctoral researcher and project manager at TU Delft, the coordinator of the SPATIAL project.
