Source Data and ambient ozone dataset generated in "Substantially underestimated global health risks of current ozone pollution"

<p>Existing assessments might have underappreciated ozone-related health impacts worldwide. Here our study assesses current global ozone pollution using the high-resolution (0.05&deg;) estimation from a geo-ensemble learning model, with key focuses on population exposure and all-cause mortality burden. Our model demonstrates strong performance, achieving a mean bias of less than -1.5 parts per billion against in-situ measurements. We estimate that 66.2% of the global population is exposed to excess ozone for short term (&gt; 30 days per year), and 94.2% suffers from long-term exposure. Furthermore, severe ozone exposure levels are observed in Cropland areas, particularly over Asia. Importantly, the all-cause ozone-attributable deaths significantly surpass previous recognition from specific diseases worldwide. Notably, mid-latitude Asia (30&deg;N) and the western United States show high mortality burden, contributing substantially to global ozone-attributable deaths. Our study highlights current significant global ozone-related health risks and may benefit the ozone-exposed population in the future.</p>

<p>This repository contains all raw and derived data produced as part of the <a href="https://rbtl-fs22.github.io/website/">ETH Zurich course &quot;Research Beyond the Lab: Open Science and Research Methods for a Global Engineer&quot; (151-8102-00L)</a> offered in spring term 2022.</p> <p>Students were assigned teams of four to conduct a collaborative research project broadly addressing the theme of &ldquo;Trash in the Public Spaces of Zurich&rdquo; in collaboration with <a href="https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ted/de/index/entsorgung_recycling.html">Entsorgung &amp; Recycling Z&uuml;rich (ERZ)</a>, the waste management department at Stadt Z&uuml;rich.</p> <p>Research methods and design are taught in the first half of the course. Surveys and a waste characterisation study are then designed based on the research questions students have developed in their respective teams. The collected raw data is used in the course to teach principles of research data management, tidy data structures, reproducible research with R &amp; RStudio, and collaboration and version control with Git &amp; GitHub.</p>

Global Health Security (GHS) Tracking dataset

<div> <p>The Global Health Security Tracking (GHS) dataset is a research effort led by Dr. Rebecca Katz and Dr. Ellie Graeden at the Georgetown University Center for Global Health Science and Security. The dataset was developed to provide a shared resource to map the flow of disbursed funds for global health security. GHS Tracking allows both funders and recipients to identify gaps and prioritize future investments, and helps to highlight the ways in which funds can be allocated most effectively to have the greatest impact. The dataset and platform serve as a basis for mutual accountability within the global health security community, promoting public accounting, and providing an opportunity for countries, organizations, and other funders to showcase their successes and identify priorities for future investments.</p> <p>GHS Tracking aggregates publicly reported financial disbursements from funders to recipients for activities related to global health security, from January 2014 and December 2022, reported in nominal U.S. dollars.<strong> </strong>This effort draws from a large number of <a href="https://tracking.ghscosting.org/about/data-sources/">data sources</a>, each with varying reporting standards, methods of summarizing, and levels of metadata quality. Critical barriers to sustainable capacity strengthening in global health: A systems perspective on development assistance

<p>These qualitative datasets are associated with work done under the Inter-agency Working Group for Capacity Strengthening initiative. The data was&nbsp;captured via Miro - a digital whiteboarding tool - using an innovative co-creation process called Systems Acupuncture and details the nine systemic barriers impeding a better, more sustainable country-driven model for capacity strengthening. The data was captured over a series of stakeholder workshops and discussion sessions, and synthesized into nine &quot;system syndrome&quot; maps. Water and Planetary Health Analytics (WAPHA) global metal mines database

<p class="Teaser"><span>An estimated 23 M people live on floodplains affected by potentially dangerous concentrations of toxic waste derived from past and present metal mining activity. We analyze the global dimensions of this hazard, particularly Pb, Zn, Cu and As, using a geo-referenced global database detailing all known metal mining sites, and intact/failed tailings storage facilities. We then use process-based and empirically tested modelling, to produce a global assessment of metal mining contamination in river systems, and the number of human populations, and livestock exposed. Worldwide, metal mines impact 479,200 km of river channels and 164,000 km<sup>2 </sup>of floodplains. The number of people exposed to contamination sourced from long-term discharge of mining waste into rivers is almost fifty times greater than the number directly impacted by tailings dam failures.</span></p>

Bridging research integrity and global health epidemiology (BRIDGE) statement: guidelines for good epidemiological practice

<p>Research integrity and research fairness have gained considerable momentum in the past decade and have direct implications for global health epidemiology. Research integrity and research fairness principles should be equally nurtured to produce high quality impactful research &ndash; but bridging the two can lead to practical and ethical dilemmas. In order to provide practical guidance to researchers and epidemiologist, we set out to develop good epidemiological practice guidelines specifically for global health epidemiology, &nbsp;&nbsp;targeted at stakeholders involved in the commissioning, conduct, appraisal and publication of global health research.</p> <p>We developed preliminary guidelines based on targeted online searches on existing best practices for epidemiological studies and sought to align these with key elements of global health research and research fairness. We validated these guidelines through a Delphi consultation study, to reach a consensus among a wide representation of stakeholders.&nbsp;</p> <p>A total of 45 experts provided input on the first round of GEP e-Delphi consultation, and 40 in the second. Respondents covered a range of organisations (including for example academia, ministries, NGOs, research funders, technical agencies) involved in epidemiological studies from countries around the world.&nbsp;A selection of eight experts were invited for a face-to-face meeting. The final guidelines consists of a set of six standards and 42 accompanying criteria including study preparation, study protocol and ethical review, data collection, data management, analysis, reporting and dissemination.</p> <p>This database only includes anonymised responses of participants who agreed to their data being shared in this depository , i.e.19 out of the 45 (Round 1) and 40 (Round 2) participants.&nbsp;</p>

Dataset - Global site-specific health impacts of fossil energy, steel mills, oil refineries and cement plants

<div> <div> <p>Climate change and particulate matter air pollution present major threats to human well-being by causing impacts on human health. Both are connected to key air pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span>), primary fine particulate matter (PM<span><span><span>2.5</span></span></span>), sulfur dioxide (SO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span>), nitrogen oxides (NO<span><span><span>x</span></span></span>) and ammonia (NH<span><span><span>3</span></span></span>), which are primarily emitted from energy-intensive industrial sectors. We present the first study to consistently link a broad range of emission measurements for these substances with site-specific technical data, emission models, and atmospheric fate and effect models to quantify health impacts caused by nearly all global fossil power plants, steel mills, oil refineries and cement plants. The resulting health impact patterns differ substantially from far less detailed earlier studies due to the high resolution of included data, highlighting in particular the key role of emission abatement at individual coal-consuming industrial sites in densely populated areas of Asia (Northern and North-Eastern India, Java in Indonesia, Eastern China), Western Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands) as well as in the US. Of greatest health concern are the high SO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span> emissions in India, which stand out due to missing flue gas treatment and cause a particularly high share of local health impacts despite a limited number of emission sites. At the same time, the massive infrastructure and export capacity build-up in China in recent years is taking a substantial toll on regional and global health and requires more stringent regulation than in the rest of the world due to unfavorable environmental conditions and high population densities. The current phase-out of highly emitting industries in Europe is found not to have started with sites having the greatest health impacts. Our detailed site-specific emission and impact inventory is able to highlight more effective alternatives and to track future progress.</p> </div> </div>
