North Pacific Subtropical Gyre RCLV Atlas (Version 2)
<p>This dataset tracks Rotationally Coherent Lagrangian Vortices (RCLVs) at an 8-day resolution in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre region around Hawai’i. The ‘lat’ and ‘lon’ variables represent the center coordinates of the vortex, or the extremum of integrated relative vorticity. The contour boundaries demark the edge of the RCLV based on 32-day backward-in-time Lagrangian trajectories. In other words, eddies in this dataset represents a fluid mass of substantial size that was coherent for at least 32 days. The fluid masses are tracked through time to assign IDs and RCLV ages. The software used to generate the dataset is publicly available at https://github.com/lexi-jones/RCLVatlas (DOI: <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7702978" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">10.5281/ZENODO.7702978</a>).</p> <p>Version 1 of the dataset (https://simonscmap.com/catalog/datasets/RCLV_atlas; DOI: <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8139149" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">10.5281/ZENODO.8139149</a>) only includes contours that represent features of age 32 days or older. Version 2 extends the dataset to include eddy genesis by advecting the particle sets backward-in-time to age 24, 16, and 8 days.</p>
Shipborne ADCP data in the Thwaites Gyre region, 2019
<p>This dataset contains the velocity profiles in the Thwaites Gyre region collected by the shipborne Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) onboard RV Nathaniel B Palmer in 2019 under the project Thwaites-Amundsen Regional Survey and Network Integrating Atmosphere-Ice-Ocean Processes (TARSAN). Ocean current velocities over the upper 980 m of the water column were obtained using a 75 kHz Ocean Surveyor (OS75) and a 38 kHz Ocean Surveyor (OS38) shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (sADCP). Common Ocean Data Access System (CODAS) processing has been run to generate the NetCDF files. The authors made additional quality control including, 1. removing data with velocity values higher than 0.6 m/s and other obvious outliners, and 2. removing data below 400 m for OS75 and data below 760 m for OS38 as the last several levels in the velocity profiles are believed to be potentially affected by the water turbidity and bubbles passing below the sADCP etc. The data are stored in .txt format and .mat MATLAB format.</p>

A Hard Day's Night: Diel shifts in microbial eukaryotic activity in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
<p><strong>A Hard Day’s Night: Diel shifts in microbial eukaryotic activity in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre </strong>(<em>submitted</em>)</p> <p><strong>Authors: </strong>Sarah K. Hu1*, Paige E. Connell1, Lisa Y. Mesrop1, & David A. Caron1</p> <p>1University of Southern California, Biological Sciences, Los Angeles, CA, USA</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Molecular analysis revealed diel rhythmicity in the metabolic activity of single-celled microbial eukaryotes (protists) at station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Diel trends among different protistan taxonomic groups reflected distinct nutritional capabilities and temporal niche partitioning. Changes in relative metabolic activities among phototrophs corresponded to the light cycle, generally peaking in mid- to late-afternoon. Metabolic activities of protistan taxa with phagotrophic ability were higher at night, relative to daytime, potentially in response to increased availability of picocyanobacterial prey. Tightly correlated Operational Taxonomic Units throughout the diel cycle implicated the existence of parasitic and mutualistic relationships within the microbial eukaryotic community, underscoring the need to define and include these symbiotic interactions in marine food web descriptions. This study provided a new high-resolution view into the ecologically important interactions among primary producers and consumers that mediate the transfer of carbon to higher trophic levels. Characterizations of the temporal dynamics of protistan activities contribute knowledge for predicting how these microorganisms respond to environmental forcing factors.</p> <p> </p> <p><a href="https://github.com/shu251/18Sdiversity_diel">See github for additional information on data analysis.</a></p>

<p>Transition of the mesoscale cyclonic eddy occurred in the Kuroshio Extension re-circulation gyre (KERG) from June to December 2019. Color shades denote sea surface height (SSH) map (color contours, m). The Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension (KE) are shown by a sharp southward increase in SSH and the recirculation gyre is illustrated by a high-SSH (>1.6 m) region. The SSH map was generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information.</p>

Data from: Vertical gradients in species richness and community composition across the twilight zone in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
Although metazoan animals in the mesopelagic zone play critical roles in deep pelagic food webs and in the attenuation of carbon in midwaters, the diversity of these assemblages is not fully known. A metabarcoding survey of mesozooplankton diversity across the epipelagic, mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic zones (0-1500m) in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre revealed far higher estimates of species richness than expected given prior morphology-based studies in the region (4,024 OTUs, 10-fold increase), despite conservative bioinformatic processing. OTU richness of the full assemblage peaked at lower epipelagic-upper mesopelagic depths (100-300m), with slight shoaling of maximal richness at night due to diel vertical migration, in contrast to expectations of a deep mesopelagic diversity maximum as reported for several plankton groups in early systematic and zoogeographic studies. Four distinct depth-stratified species assemblages were identified, with faunal transitions occurring at 100m, 300m, and 500m. Highest diversity occurred in the smallest zooplankton size fractions (0.2-0.5mm), which had significantly lower % OTUs classified due to poor representation in reference databases, suggesting a deep reservoir of poorly understood diversity in the smallest metazoan animals. A diverse meroplankton assemblage also was detected (350 OTUs), including larvae of both shallow and deep living benthic species. Our results provide some of the first insights into the hidden diversity present in zooplankton assemblages in midwaters, and a molecular reappraisal of vertical gradients in species richness, depth distributions, and community composition for the full zooplankton assemblage across the epipelagic, mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic zones.
