Evidence of alliesthesia during a neighborhood thermal walk in a hot and dry city (Phoenix, Arizona)
Thermal comfort should be an integral part of urban design in the context of global warming and urbanization. The influence of built infrastructure on thermal perceptions of walking pedestrians is not well explored, but thermal walks that combine sensing technologies with simultaneous collection of user experiences is a promising research direction to shorten the gap. We examined the relationships between the built environment, heat perception, and behavioral coping mechanisms in one of the most heat vulnerable Phoenix neighborhoods. Using Phoenix as an example, where extremely hot summer temperatures are becoming a norm, can help to address heat challenges of other cities that are facing rising temperatures. This study is an experimental citizen science project in which participants were surveyed during a 1-hour walk around the neighborhood and recorded their experience in a field guide. Walkers wore GPS devices and microclimate measurements were taken to gain deeper insights on subjective heat perception and physical body heat accumulation during the walk. Results revealed the differences in heat perception across a variety of urban landscapes. Participants identified preferred and most challenging locations. Combined GPS and microclimate data mapped in GIS visualized dependencies between the streetscape, microclimate, and thermal perceptions. Moreover, we presented the evidence of thermal alliesthesia, a feeling of pleasure from relieving of thermal discomfort. This project is one of the first to examine the impact of urban environment on dynamic psychological and physiological responses to heat. Using sensing technologies and collecting subjective perceptions, this research will inform the design changes in the neighborhood that will undergo redevelopment. It can serve as an example for other cities striving to adapt urban microclimates to new extremes.
Compound hot and dry and wet and windy events in CMIP6 models

Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group T5.3 Sclerophyll hot deserts and semi-deserts
<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>T5.3 Sclerophyll hot deserts and semi-deserts</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>

MCMC samples of the posterior distribution from the paper "TESS spots a mini-neptune interior to a hot saturn in the TOI-2000 system"
<p>This dataset contains the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo samples of the posterior distribution of the planetary and stellar parameters from the paper "TESS Spots a Mini-Neptune Interior to a Hot Saturn in the TOI-2000 System". The file format, NetCDF, is based on HDF5, and is meant to be read by the Python package <a href="https://python.arviz.org/en/latest/">ArviZ</a>.</p> <p>Hot jupiters (<em>P</em> < 10 d, <em>M</em> > 60 M<sub>⊕</sub>) are almost always found alone around their stars, but four out of hundreds known have inner companion planets. These rare companions allow us to constrain the hot jupiter's formation history by ruling out high-eccentricity tidal migration. Less is known about inner companions to hot Saturn-mass planets. We report here the discovery of the TOI-2000 system, which features a hot Saturn-mass planet with a smaller inner companion. The mini-neptune TOI-2000 b (2.70 ± 0.15 R<sub>⊕</sub>, 11.0 ± 2.4 M<sub>⊕</sub>) is in a 3.10-day orbit, and the hot saturn TOI-2000 c (<span class="math-tex">\(8.14^{+0.31}_{-0.30}\)</span> R<sub>⊕</sub>, <span class="math-tex">\(81.7^{+4.7}_{-4.6}\)</span> M<sub>⊕</sub>) is in a 9.13-day orbit. Both planets transit their host star TOI-2000 (TIC 371188886, <em>V</em> = 10.98, <em>TESS</em> magnitude = 10.36), a metal-rich ([Fe/H] = <span class="math-tex">\(0.439^{+0.041}_{-0.043}\)</span>) G dwarf 174 pc away. <em>TESS</em> observed the two planets in sectors 9–11 and 36–38, and we followed up with ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and speckle imaging. Radial velocities from HARPS allowed us to confirm both planets by direct mass measurement. In addition, we demonstrate constraining planetary and stellar parameters with MIST stellar evolutionary tracks through Hamiltonian Monte Carlo under the PyMC framework, achieving higher sampling efficiency and shorter run time compared to traditional Markov chain Monte Carlo. Having the brightest host star in the <em>V</em> band among similar systems, TOI-2000 b and c are superb candidates for atmospheric characterization by the JWST, which can potentially distinguish whether they formed together or TOI-2000 c swept along material during migration to form TOI-2000 b.</p>

Silica dissolution and precipitation kinetics in hot geothermal conditions
<p>This dataset report quartz dissolution kinetics as obtained from packed column experiments at different flow rates. Variables were temperature, pressure and NaCl content as incicated in the table. Silica values are reported as mg/L of Si as measured by ICP-OES. Also included in the table is a column describing how data series were treated to extract steady-state values for each flow rate (cf. the report to which the current dataset is related). The column "solubility used" states the solubility used to calculate dissolution (k<sub>+</sub>) and precipitation (k<sub>-</sub>) rate constants along with a column "source" which briefly indicates how this value was obtained. Further details are given in the report.</p> <p>Factors used to get from the raw data to the reported rate constants are also given. Not included in the table, but common for all data points are a quartz BET surface are of 0.6922 m<sup>2</sup>/g, 10 g quartz and a quartz activity assumed to be 1.</p> <p>Note that this dataset contain several measurement points that are not representative. These include points close do equilibrium where kinetic information cannot be reliably obtained and points where it is suspected that a temperature drop during sampling may have caused erroneous results (the Si content actually represents a somewhat lower temperature that was not measured). Public Transit Infrastructure and Heat Perceptions in Hot and Dry Climates (June-July, 2018; Phoenix, Arizona, USA)
Increasing the use of public transit is an important sustainability goal targeted by many cities worldwide. However, cities in hot and warming climates risk to compromise residents’ health and thermal comfort by incentivizing public transit use and, thus, subjecting them to prolonged heat exposure. This dataset contains data collected during a study on the relationships between public transit infrastructures, microclimate and heat perceptions in the hot and dry city of Phoenix, Arizona. A field campaign at six Phoenix bus stops was held between June 6 and July 27, 2018. Filed campaign consisted of surveying bus riders at bus stops and measuring microclimate variables at sun exposed and shaded locations at bus stops. Standard, advertising and art bus stop types along an arterial Phoenix road in South Mountain Village neighborhood were sampled. Standard and advertising bus stop shelters were metal with no landscaping, art stops had a larger polycarbonate canopy, integrated artwork, trees and landscaping features. Eighty-three participants filled out the survey, 241 microclimate measurements and 1003 surface temperatures at bus stops were taken. Data were collected at three intervals: 7:00-9:00am, 12:00-2:00pm, and 3:00-5:00pm. Differences between sun and shade, as well as heat perceptions were analyzed using statistical methods. The research team has found that certain infrastructure types are more effective in reducing particular microclimate variables, for instance, trees were most effective in reducing air temperature by as much as 1.3°C on average, and shade from vertical advertising sign was most effective in reducing mean radiant temperature by an average of 11°C. Many surface temperatures of sun exposed materials sampled at bus stops exceeded skin burn thresholds. Study participants perceived stops with improved infrastructure and landscaping as slightly cooler. GIS Protocol for Multy-Scale Emerging Hot Spot Analysis
<p>This GIS protocol is primarily intended as supplementary material to the article (Štular et al., 2022). The article contains important contextual information about its intended use. In short, this GIS protocol was developed for the purposes of archaeological regional analysis of spatial data. The data are provided elsewhere in spreadsheet format (Štular et al., 2021). Data in GIS format are included in this repository. A Niclosamide-releasing hot-melt extruded catheter prevents Staphylococcus aureus experimental biomaterial-associated infection
<p>Biomaterial-associated infections are a major healthcare challenge as they are responsible for high disease burden in critically ill patients. In this study, we have developed drug-eluting antibacterial catheters to prevent catheter-related infections. Niclosamide (NIC), originally an antiparasitic drug, was incorporated into the polymeric matrix of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) via solvent casting, and catheters were fabricated using hot-melt extrusion technology. The mechanical and physicochemical properties of TPU polymers loaded with NIC were studied. NIC was released in a sustained manner from the catheters and exhibited <em>in vitro</em> antibacterial activity against <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> and <em>Staphylococcus epidermidis</em>. Moreover, the antibacterial efficacy of NIC-loaded catheters was validated in an <em>in vivo</em> biomaterial-associated infection mouse model using a methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strain of <em>S. aureus. </em>The released NIC from the produced catheters reduced bacterial colonization of the catheter as well as of the surrounding tissue. In summary, the NIC-releasing hot-melt extruded catheters prevented implant colonization and reduced the bacterial colonization of peri-catheter tissue by methicillin sensitive as well as resistant <em>S. aureus</em> in a biomaterial-associated infection mouse model and has good prospects for preclinical development.</p>

EBSD Dataset of the Alpha and Beta Phase Orientations for a Hot-Rolled Zr-2.5Nb Alloy
<p>A set of ex-situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) datafiles following rolling of a Zr-2.5Nb alloy at different temperatures (700C, 750C, 775C, 800C, 825C, 850C, 900C) and rolling reductions (50%, 75%, 87.5%). Data for annealing of the material (750C for 2 hours) and following rolling at 800C from a different ‘as-forged’ starting texture is also included. A FIELD STUDY ON THERMAL INSULATION PERFORMANCE OF GREEN ROOF FOR BUILDINGS IN HOT DRY CLIMATE OF ZARIA, NIGERIA
<p>Although the practice of employing the use of green roof for thermal insulation is gaining a wideranging acceptance across the globe, its use in Nigeria and the sub Saharan Africa has remained unpopular. Study has shown that, although a vast literature on different approaches in the application of green roof system exists, there is substantial misrepresentation of inferences regarding its applications in Nigeria. The purpose of the study therefore, is to assess the thermal performance of green roof in facilitating thermal insulation for building interiors of hot dry climate in Nigeria. The study is carried out through an empirical field observation in the premises of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria. Two miniature live models were built and covered with galvanised iron roofing sheets on timber trusses; one of which was covered with green roof, while the other was left bare. This is with the view to determine the rate of thermal insulation a green roof system can offer over the bare roof in the building interiors of the study area. Using the experimental approach in green roof investigation, a data logging system was installed in the two thermal zones and readings of the temperature profile was taken. The results showed that; a reduction of 2.08°C in indoor air temperature was obtained on the diurnal ranges, while 19.78% of temperature fluctuation was achieved. Generally, the result showed that higher temperature ranges were recorded in the bare roofed case than the green roof. The maximum, mean and minimum record for the bare roof was 45.20°C, 32.03°C and 21.10°C respectively; while the recorded values for the green roof were 41.90°C, 29.95°C, and 21.00°C respectively. This implies that, the presence of vegetation on the green roofed case has offered a degree of thermal insulation required to achieve better passive cooling in order to attain thermal comfort in the interiors of the study area.</p>
