RAW SEM images mosaics dataset for the HRDIC strain localization study in shot peened Ni superalloy

We used a FEI Magellan HR 400L FE-SEM with a theoretical resolution of ≤ 0.9 nm at <1kV and ≤ 0.8 nm at ≥ 5kV to take backscattered electron images of the fine, homogeneous distributed gold speckle pattern obtained by remodelling of a thin gold layer previously deposited on the polished sample surface. The images were obtained at a working distance of 3.5 mm, 5 kV and 0.8 nA beam current. Mosaics of 30x15 images were used to cover 950x420 µm2. Each image contains 2048 x 1768 pixels and has a horizontal field of view of 43 µm. The images were overlapped by 20% to enable easy stitching prior to the digital image correlation. We obtained 7 mosaics, one before tensile testing and 6 after each deformation step.

This set of images at different strain steps is coupled with the EBSD data set in https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4730184, the HRDIC strain maps in http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4728016 and data visualisation scripts in http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4727939

0_def corresponds to the undeformed sample, while 1_def to 6_def were obtained after each deformation step.

EBSD data for HRDIC analysis in AZ31

EBSD data set obtained from the HRDCI analysis in an AZ31 mg alloy surface after deformation without removing the gold speckles. The map was obtained using a CamScan MX2000 equipped with an Oxford Instruments EBSD detector at 25 kV and using step size of 0.23 µm.

This EBSD data set was obtained in the same region where the HRDIC analysis was performed for our publication entitled " Why magnesium is not brittle: a quantitative study on the accommodation of deformation incompatibility". The HRDIC data set can be found in https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.345313 while the notebook to visualise data is allocated in https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.376503.

Accompanying the EBSD data set, images of the IPF representation in the three sample axis and the Schmid factor for basal slip when loading respect to the X axis (horizontal respect to the images)

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 IPF-legend.tif --> Legend for the different IPF maps

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 IPF-X.tif --> EBSD map represented respect to the X-axis (horizontal)

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 IPF-X.tif --> EBSD map represented respect to the Y-axis (vertical)

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 IPF-X.tif --> EBSD map represented respect to the Z-axis (observation axis)

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 m-Basal-legend.tif --> Legend for the Schmid factor for Basal slip map

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31 m-Basal.tif --> Schmid factor values for Basal slip

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31.cpr --> Raw data, .cpr format

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31.crc --> Raw data, .crc format

EBSD for HRDIC in AZ31.txt --> Raw data, .txt format

Magnesium AZ31 HRDIC Data Set

This pack contains the data set obtained from the high-resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC) study of an AZ31 magnesium alloy. This data set can be visualised using the notebook (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.376503), which can be used as a companion to out article entitled " Why magnesium is not brittle: a quantitative study on the accommodation of deformation incompatibility". Additionally, EBSD data set for the same region can be found in https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.345925.

This data repository contains:

AZ31.txt: correlation data.

AZ31.npy: correlation data in binary iPython format.

MSSPowerNorm.tif: high-resolution image of the effective shear strain using the data set and the iPython notebook.

Patterning was performed using an in house styrene-assisted gold remodelling device producing gold speckles sizes in the range 20-40 nm.

Backscattered electron images were obtained using a FEI Magellan HR 400L FE-SEM at a working distance of 3.2 mm, 1 kV, 0.8 nA beam current, using immersion mode and a beam deceleration with stage bias of 2 kV. Mosaics of 15x15 images were used to cover 135x120 µm2. Each tile is an image containing 2048 x 1768 pixels and has a horizontal field of view of 14.92 µm. The images were overlapped by 25% to enable easy stitching prior to the digital image correlation. Two mosaics were obtained, one before and one after deformation

HRDIC and EBSD data for the study of early stage plasticity of a Ni-base superalloy

We used High-Resolution Digital Image Correlation (HRDIC) to study the strain localisation and slip activity of a Ni-base superalloy sample, which was subjected to an in-situ tensile test inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Displacement data for HRDIC were calculated using two methods: the integrated method, which correlates with the initial reference frame, and the differential method, which correlates with the previous step. Both datasets are available and saved in separate folders in the .zip file named 'HRDIC and EBSD data'.

EBSD data for the region of interest (ROI) can be found in the same .zip file along with a Jupyter Notebook to read and visualise to both datasets.
