High-Speed Video Recordings of Wheel-Rail Traction Enhancement Using a Full-Scale Testing Platform - Granular Material Candidates

A database of 14 high-speed video recordings of rail-sanding process using a full-scale testing platform is provided in this data note. The videos are recorded for various case studies, namely different positioning of the sander nozzle aiming at the rail, nip, and wheel with various angles, and different materials used as rail-sand. The particle velocities can be extracted from these high-speed videos using particle image velocimetry software. The spread angle of the particles as they flow out of the nozzle can also be measured with the use of image processing software. The data extracted from these high-speed recording can be utilised for calibration, validation, and verification of experimental and numerical set-ups, as well as for training artificial intelligence models.

High-Speed Camera Videos of Electrical Arc During Hot Switching Tests

This repository contains high-speed camera videos showing the ignition, evolution, and extinguishing of electrical arcs generated by a single break operation. The videos were acquired to obtain a better understanding of the phenomenon of primary arcing prior to the ignition of the main arc. The electrical arcs were generated by a break operation (hot switching) between two electrodes. The static electrode is a hard-gold coated silver-nickel core rivet. The moving electrode consists of different electrical contact materials. Namely: pure silver and copper electrodes (obtained from high-purity rod material, Ag rod and Cu rod), powder metallurgically sintered silver and copper reference samples (Ag0 and Cu0), as well as carbon nanotube reinforced metal matrix composites (Ag1, Ag2, Ag, Cu1, Cu2, and Cu3, where the number indicates the weight percentage of carbon nanotubes). Well-established reference materials were also recorded, i.e., Ag-Ni 90-10, Ag-SnO2 92-8, Ag-SnO2 90-10, and Ag-SnO2 88-12. The electrical load consisted of four 50 W conventional automotive halogen lamps (direct current).

Integrating high-speed videos in capture-mark-recapture studies of insects

Capture-mark-recapture (CMR) studies have been used extensively in ecology and evolution. While it is feasible to apply CMR in some animals, it is considerably more challenging in small fast-moving species such as insects. In these groups, low recapture rates can bias estimates of demographic parameters, thereby, handicapping effective analysis and management of wild populations. Here we use high-speed videos (HSV) to capture two large dragonfly species, Anax junius and Rhionaeschna multicolor, that rarely land and, thus, are particularly challenging for CMR studies. We test whether HSV, compared to conventional "eye" observations, increases the "resighting" rates and, consequently, improves estimates of both survival rates and the effects of demographic covariates on survival. We show that the use of HSV increases the number of resights by 64% in A. junius and 48% in R. multicolor. HSV improved our estimates of resighting and survival probability which were either under- or overestimated with the conventional observations. Including HSV improved credible intervals for resighting rate and survival probability by 190% and 130% in A. junius and R. multicolor, respectively. Hence, it has the potential to open the door to a wide range of research possibilities on species that are traditionally difficult to monitor with distance sampling, including within insects and birds.

High-speed video microscopy analysis of cilia before and after airway cell culture

High-speed video microscopy analysis (HSVA) is a diagnostic tool used within the UK Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) Service to access airway ciliary function on nasal brushing biopsies. The Southampton PCD group is based at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and is led by Professor Jane Lucas. We also use air-liquid interface (ALI) culture to differentiate airway epithelial cells to regrow healthy cilia to repeat standard PCD tests (including HSVA, immunofluoresence labelling of cilia proteins, transmission electron microscopy and functional genomics) and provide PCD research samples, which also allow us to develop new diagnostic approaches. ALI-culture can restore normal ciliary movement when secondary damage (due to infection or poor cell health) temporarily causes of abnormal cilia movement or a lack of cilia. ALI-culture can also re-confirm when ciliary defects and abnormal ciliary function are permanent and cause by inherited PCD (a ciliopathy).

Fracture propagation captured by high-speed camera 2: Video (configuration 4)

The video presents the target plate captured by high-speed camera 2 during testing, and shows the damage for configuration 4. A line can be observed between the first and the third impact and a lighter one between the second and third impact. A deeper analysis of the three enlarged holes highlights the location of crack tips and the crack between the first and the third hole. The line between impact 1 and 3 corresponds, to a full crack formation on the plate. On the contrary, there is only an initiation of crack formation between impacts 2 and 3.

Penetration and perforation process of 12.7mm FSP on plate captured by high-speed camera 2: Video (Test 2 of configuration 2).

The penetration and the perforation process of configuration 2 is recorded using HSC 2. It is shown that at the moment of impact, the FSP causes a localized bulge at the rear side of the plate. A localized shearing of material, induced by the FSP front surface, is created in the contact zone. Immediately after, the FSP penetrates and a circular plug is punched through the plate, leaving a clean cut hole. Subsequently, the punched plug can be seen attached to the front surface of the projectile. After that, the punched plug is separated from the FSP.

"Pitch-angle of FSP before and after ballistic impact on plate captured by high-speed camera 1: Video (configuration 2)".

The figure reveals that the pitch-angle of a 12.7mm FSP both before and after the ballistic impact on an Aluminum plate is low.
