Groundwater Levels on Hog Island, VA. 2007-2021

This dataset contains hourly measurements of groundwater levels on Hog Island, VA - off the Atlantic Coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. It continues measurements of groundwater levels that were initiated in by Frank Day in July 1990 (dataset VCR99066) and by Mark Brinson in October 1997 (dataset VCR05130). Refer to these datasets for previous measurements. The groundwater measurements use the same wells and locations, but differ in sensor technology and frequency of measurement. In August 2007, a system of wirelessly-connected data loggers designed by Thomas Williams was installed with help from Arthur Schwarzschild, Chris Buck, John Hayward and John Porter. The system was decomissioned December 31, 2021

GPS Locations of Seagrass Sites in Hog Island Bay and South Bay, VA 2010-2021

This dataset contains the GPS coordinates for plots within the Z. marina restoration in the Hog Island Bay and South Bay, VA that are sampled annually as part of the long-term restoration experiment. Plots were seeded between 2001-2008; 64 plots in Hog Island Bay (58 seagrass plots and 6 bare plots) and 12 plots in South Bay (6 seagrass plots and 6 bare plots) were sampled beginning in 2010. The bare sites in South Bay were no longer sampled after 2013 due to colonization by seagrass. Additional sites were identified in 2017 in areas of natural seagrass expansion - 6 in Hog Island Bay and 6 in South Bay.

Wave and turbidity measurements, Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA, Summer 2017

Time series of turbidity, water surface elevation, wave height and period, and water temperature were measured at sites along a bay-to-marsh transect along the east-facing margin of Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA in summer 2017. The measurements were made to characterize suspended sediment concentrations in the water inundating Fowling Point marsh during high tides and storms, as a proxy for the availability of sediment for wetland accretion. The time series includes a spring-neap cycle and a wind-driven resuspension event. The measurements were made to support marsh depositional modeling being carried out as part of an NSF-sponsored Coastal SEES research project.

Barrier Island Plant and Soil Properties on Hog and Metompkin Islands, Virginia, 2021-2022

Dune building has the potential to impact the entire barrier island ecosystem, and these grasses therefore serve as ecosystem engineers. Protection offered by dune ridges directly impacts the adjacent swale habitat, modifying both biotic and abiotic factors. In order to better understand how dune building impacts the island ecosystem as a whole, we quantified sediment accretion, plant percent cover, stem numbers, and soil characteristics (chlorides, bulk density, %OM, %C, %N). These characteristics were assessed on two islands with varied disturbance intensities. Hog island is infrequently disturbed, and resists change driven by storms and overwash. Metompkin island is frequently disturbed and undergoes high rates of overwash and island migration.

Hog Island VA Small-Mammal Trapping 1989-2020

This dataset contains information on long-term small mammal trapping on the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER. Four transects on Hog Island are included in the data, each of which was trapped at least twice each year, typically in the spring and autumn (note: Transect T2 was not trapped every year). Along each transect Sherman Live Traps were placed every 12.5 m along the transect, with an alternating offset of 2.5 m (to remove traps from the path running down the transect). This leaves a total inter-trap distance of 15 m. Traps were baited with peanut butter wrapped in waxed paper and were run sequentially for at least 3 nights in a row. Traps in areas that would experience tidal flooding were placed on styrofoam plastic platforms to provide flotation during high tides. Captured animals were individually tagged with numbered fingerling fish tags placed in the right ear, inspected for sex and sexual characteristics, weighed with a spring scale to the nearest gram and released at the point of capture.

Tide Data for Hog Island (1991-), Redbank (1992-), Oyster (2007-)

Tide data from VCR/LTER tide stations. It is available as a single large comma-separated-value file (size >50MB) or as individual years. Zip files contain annually-segmented data in two forms. The file tideYY.dat contains the data for year YY in a column format. The file tideYY.csv contains the same data in a comma-delimited format. For several sites and time periods, water temperatures are also recorded. All dates and times are in Eastern Standard Time.

Fish Counts and Lengths in South Bay and Hog Island Bay, Virginia 2012-2018

To study how seagrass restoration affects coastal fish communities over time, we sampled fishes at each site once or twice per year with beach seines (7.6 m wide × 1.8 m tall; 1.5 m deep pocket with 6.4 mm mesh) hauled along 25-m transects in the summer (May or June) and autumn (September or October) from 2012 through 2018. Researchers ceased sampling at the 4 initially unvegetated sites in South Bay after 2015, when these sites were colonized by seagrass, although seining occurred once more at these sites during the autumn of 2017. During each sampling event, we counted, measured (total length), and identified fish to the lowest possible taxon in the field prior to release. All seine hauls occurred during the day and within 3 hours of low tide for logistical reasons (n = 204). Winds on Hog Island Virginia 2009-2019

An RM Young wind monitor was installed at the Machipongo Station n the northern part of Hog Island, on the western side of the island upland. It was initially installed on top of the tower on the station at a height of approximately 20m. Subsequent to the demolition of the Machipongo Station in 2012, the monitor was moved to near the top of an abandoned Coast Guard flag tower (approx. 15 m high) located adjacent to the former site of the Machipongo Station. Measurements of wind speed and direction were taken each hour. The mean wind vector magnitude and direction are recorded based on 60 measurements made each hour. Standard deviation of the wind direction was calculated using the Campbell Scientifics formula. Starting in 2013 peak wind speeds were also recorded. Collection of this data ended in 2019. It was replaced by the dataset knb-lter-vcr.25 (Hourly Meteorological Data for the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER 1989-present) when a full-fledged meteological station was installed atop a 20-meter tall lookout tower on southern Hog Island at the site of the former town of Broadwater.

Atmospheric pressure on Hog Island, Phillips Creek Marsh and Oyster, VA 2012-2025

Soil Moisture at Three Different Dune Elevations on the Hog Island, Northampton County, VA 2023

In summer 2023, soils were collected from swale grasslands (embryonic, Intermediate [swale 1] and Inland [swale 2]) on southern Hog Island. They were kept in plastic bags to quantify soil moisture content, which was determined by weighing cores to obtain water mass before and after drying at 105 deg_C for 72 hours. Topobathymetric DEMs of Short Prong marsh and tidal flat in Hog Island Bay, VA 2022-2023

Seamless DEMs of the marsh edge and tidal flat at Short Prong in 2022 and 2023 were created using a combination of aerial photogrammetry and boat-mounted single-beam echosounding. Aerial photogrammetry surveys of the subaerial intertidal flat and marsh edge were completed during low tide using a DJI Phantom 4 RTK drone. Positioning was determined using six surveyed ground control points and drone on-board RTK. During high tide, a single beam echosounder was used to survey six cross-shore transects of the subtidal and one alongshore transect near the marsh edge. The same flight plan and echosounding survey path was used both years, with surveys taking place on 7/19/22 and 7/11/23. Photogrammetric data was processed in Agisoft Metashape to produce a DEM and a photomosaic. Echosounding data was processed in Hydromagic and interpolated using the natural neighbor method in GIS. Overlap of survey extent between photogrammetric and echosounding DEMs were stitched together in GIS to create seamless DEMs with a cellsize of 3 cm from the lower elevations of the marsh platform into the subtidal flat for 2022 and 2023.

Biomass and Plant Species Composition on Hog and Metompkin Islands, 2020-2022

Beginning in 2020, annual plant surveys were conducted along 3 cross-shore transects on Hog and Metompkin Islands along the Atlantic coast of Virginia. Transects were established starting at the high water mark, and continuing inland until reaching a shrub thicket. Plots were placed 10m apart in beach and swale habitats, and 5m apart across dunes. At each plot, percent composition was measured within a 0.25m^2 quadrat. Aboveground biomass was also obtained within a randomly placed 10x100cm^2 quadrat. Biomass was then dried and weighed. Due to logistical constraints, biomass was not collected in 2022.

Shrub Edge Community and Microclimate Data from Hog Island, VA 2021-2022

This data was collected from 2021-2023 on Hog Island, VA in the swale along the south end of the island where there is active shrub expansion of Morella cerifera (Southern wax myrtle). The microclimate data includes water table depth, soil moisture, soil nutrients, PAR (Photosynthetically active radiation), and temperature in (℃). These data were collected along the shrub edge and in the open grassland plots (n=10). The vegetation community data includes percent cover, stem density, and height measured in a 0.25 m2 plot. The 4 species identified to dominate in both communities were: Andropogon virginicus, Spartina patens, Panicum amarum, and Solidago sempervirens. These species were used for trait analyses. The trait data includes: specific leaf area (SLA), stem specific density (SSD), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), and leaf nutrients.
