Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Total Daily Precipitation by Watershed, 1956 - present

From 1956 to 2014, watershed precipitation was estimated using the Thiessen Means weighting method. Daily watershed precipitation values were a weighted average of daily precipitation from standard gauges in or near the watershed. The weighting factor for each gauge was the fraction of the watershed area nearest that gauge. Beginning in 2015, a similar system was implemented using the 10 remaining rain gauges, however Inverse Distance Weighting was used to estimate the weighting of each gauge instead of the Theissen polygon approach. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Weekly Snow and Frost Measurements, 1955 - present

Snow and frost measurements have been collected approximately weekly during the winter season at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest using transects underneath the forest canopy adjacent to the established network of standard rain gages from 1956 to the present. Maximum snow depth, snow water content, frost occurrence, and frost depth data are recorded at points along a transect known as a snow course, which includes 10 points spaced at 2-m intervals within a designated 0.25 ha area. Data from one course are averaged for each collection date. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: 15-minute Precipitation by Watershed, 2017 - present

From 2011 to 2017, ten electronic weighing rain gauges were progressively implemented at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to measure precipitation at 15-minute intervals. 15-minute resolution watershed precipitation values for nine research watersheds are calculated as a weighted average of precipitation using Inverse Distance Weighting. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

NRCS-USFS Soil Moisture Measurements - Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 2023-2025

This dataset consists of soil moisture (volumetric water content and water potential), temperature, and electrical conductivity measurements at multiple depths within 12 soil pedons distributed across Watersheds 3, 6, and 9 at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from July 2023 to June 2025. This work is a part of the Forest Soil Moisture Monitoring Network (FSMMN), which is an interagency partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to install, monitor and generate long-term soil moisture datasets across multiple forested watersheds in the U.S. Dataset contributors: Hubbard Brook site selection and project planning was conducted by Amanda Pennino (NRCS), Scott Bailey (Virginia Tech) and Mark Green (Case Western). Site visits, data downloading, and logger maintenance was by Lucy Zendzian (NRCS), Paul Gadecki (NRCS), and Jack Ferrara (NRCS). The dataset was curated by Emily Piche (USFS, ORISE) and Amanda Pennino (NRCS). Overall partnership initiation and project management was by Stephanie Connolly (USFS) and Skye Wills (NRCS).

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Daily Precipitation Rain Gage Measurements, 1956 - present

Precipitation has been measured at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest using rain gauges located in or around each watershed since 1956. Three types of rain gauges have been used: standard, mechanical weight recording, and electronic weight recording. Between 1956 and 2014, precipitation was measured weekly at standard gages located at 24 stations in or near gauged watersheds and at the headquarters building. Weight-recording gauges were located at 7 of the 24 stations and capture a continuous strip-chart record. Weekly totals were prorated using daily totals from the nearest recording gauges. Beginning in 2011, electronic weighing rain gauges were implemented to measure 15-minute precipitation. The number of precipitation stations was reduced to 10, when each station was fully converted to an electronic gauge for measuring 15-minute and daily precipitation beginning in 2015. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Flux Tower Data, 2016-2024

Data collected from the Hubbard Brook Flux Tower starting in August 2016 that is also uploaded to the Ameriflux website under site name US-HBK. These data are from a suite of sensors installed on the 110 ft. tower and in the ground below the tower. Fast data is collected at 10Hz and is processed into 30min time steps using Licor’s Eddy Pro software. Slow data are averaged at 30 minute intervals and are included with this dataset. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Soil respiration at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Bartlett Experimental Forest and Jeffers Brook, central NH USA, 2008 - present

Abstract Soil respiration in 15 stands across 3 sites within the White Mountain National Forest was measured between 2008 and 2020. Stands included in the dataset are part of the Multiple Element in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study, a full-factorial NxP fertilization experiment. Pre- and post-treatment data are included, with treatment beginning in 2011. Soil temperature, soil moisture, and relative air humidity at the time of measurement were also recorded next to or above the soil respiration collar at the time of the soil respiration measurement. Having been cut between 1883 and 1990, stands are representative of different successional stages.

The solute fluxes in stream water are calculated as the product of the volume of stream water and solute concentrations. There are nine gaged watersheds at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, some of which have been subjected to experimental manipulations. The calculation of fluxes is currently supervised by John Campbell (US Forest Service). The long-term stream water record is collected and maintained by the US Forest Service. The collection and management of the long-term stream and precipitation chemistry record was initiated in 1963 by Gene E. Likens, F. Herbert Bormann, Robert S. Pierce, and Noye M. Johnson. HBWatER is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and Jeff Merriam (USFS) and the dataset is curated and maintained by a team of researchers: Chris Solomon (Cary IES), Emma Rosi (Cary IES), Emily Bernhardt (Duke), Lindsey Rustad (USFS), John Campbell (USFS), Bill McDowell (UNH), Charley Driscoll (Syracuse U.), Mark Green (Case Western), and Scott Bailey (USFS). Current Financial Support for HBWatER is provided by NSF LTREB # 1907683 and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Stream Biology Camera Traps, 2020-2024

This dataset comprises daily images positioned to view streams above the weirs at Hubbard Brook for watersheds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. Cameras are programmed to take one image per day at ~12:00 pm ET. Each file is timestamped with the image metadata, but also within the file name, and structured to enable temporal trend analysis for end-users. The cameras used are BUSHNELL model number 119R3, and data are collected on SIM cards and manually downloaded every six months. Data gaps are minimal and generally associated with battery failures. These data are designed to capture stream dynamics over time for the purpose of visual pattern analysis, environmental monitoring, and machine learning applications. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
