Infrared and Isotope data from cremated human remains

<p>This dataset contains the infrared and isotopic data obtained from recently deceased cremated individuals of known residential history from the UTK Donated Skeletal Collection curated by the Forensic Anthropology Center (Knoxville, Tennessee). By carrying out these measurements on different bones with different turnover rates (i.e., otic capsule of the petrous part of the temporal bone, femur, and rib), we endeavor to reconstruct life histories of recently deceased cremated individuals and gain new insights into cremation practices. The results highlight differences in carbon and oxygen isotopes between different skeletal elements and confirm their potential to gather information about the way a body was burned (e.g. temperatures, fuel used). Strontium concentrations and isotope ratios were also measured to assess the geographical origin of these individuals. The use of strontium isotope ratios, however, seem to have limitations for individuals born in the last few decades due to globalization of consumed food resources.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Human-mediated extirpation of the unique Chatham Islands sea lion and implications for the conservation management of remaining New Zealand sea lion populations

While terrestrial megafaunal extinctions have been well characterized worldwide, our understanding of declines in marine megafauna remains limited. Here, we use ancient DNA analyses of prehistoric (&lt;1450–1650 AD) sea lion specimens from New Zealand's isolated Chatham Islands to assess the demographic impacts of human settlement. These data suggest there was a large population of sea lions, unique to the Chatham Islands, at the time of Polynesian settlement. This distinct mitochondrial lineage became rapidly extinct within 200 years due to overhunting, paralleling the extirpation of a similarly large endemic mainland population. Whole mitogenomic analyses confirm substantial intraspecific diversity among prehistoric lineages. Demographic models suggest that even low harvest rates would likely have driven rapid extinction of these lineages. This study indicates that surviving Phocarctos populations are remnants of a once diverse and widespread sea lion assemblage, highlighting dramatic human impacts on endemic marine biodiversity. Our findings also suggest that Phocarctos bycatch in commercial fisheries may contribute to the ongoing population decline.

The Rise of Ethical Discussions on Human Remains in Scientific Publications

<p><strong>Presentation Given at the&nbsp;23rd Annual Conference of the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO)</strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract (250 words</strong>) Recent years saw a growing interest in ethical considerations associated with excavating, analysing, and curating human remains, leading to a publication increase. This paper explores the reference to ethical issues associated with human remains, aiming to assess emergent trends and significant concerns. Data were retrieved from an online publications database (Dimensions), using a Boolean query to search titles and abstracts mentioning topics related to Ethics and Human Remains. The analysis considered the year of publication, source data, and relevant terms used in the publications aiming to explore emerging patterns. A total of 181 publications were identified, published between 1990 and (July) 2022, with an increase in publications since 2014. Most were published in journals (n=111) the remaining in books and encyclopedias. The most co-occurrence terms were &ldquo;Archaeology&rdquo;, &ldquo;Museum&rdquo;, &ldquo;Study&rdquo;, &ldquo;Use&rdquo; and &ldquo;Collection&rdquo;. Publication trends showed a higher focus on ethics within archaeology. Not only archaeology was one of the most used terms in titles and abstracts, but archaeological journals had the higher number of publications (3 to 5 papers) on ethics. Although most papers were published in a wide diversity of journals, those usually featured&nbsp;<em>only one or two publications. The most cited article, also with a high atlmetric alternative score, was in aDNA published in 2018. Showing an increasing interest in aDNA by scientists and the public. Results suggest the need for the continuing discussion of ethical matters regarding human remains in biological anthropology, and for journals to feature a higher number of publications on the matter.</em></p> <p><em><strong>Video Also available @<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhvjDnRo48Y">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhvjDnRo48Y</a></strong></em></p>

The Creation, Use, and Dissemination of 3D Models of Human Remains: A Case Study from Portugal. <em>Heritage </em><strong>2022</strong>, <em>5</em></p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>Advancements in digital technology have conquered a place in cultural heritage. The widespread use of three-dimensional scanners in bioanthropology have increased the production of 3D digital replicas of human bones that are freely distributed online. However, ethical considerations about such 3D models have not reached Portuguese society, making it impossible to assess their societal impact and people&rsquo;s perception of how these models are created and used. Therefore, Portuguese residents were asked to take part in an online survey. The ratio of male to female participants was 0.5:1 in 312 contributors. The age ranged between 18 and 69 years. The majority had a higher education degree. Only 43% had seen a 3D model, and 43% considered the 3D replicas the same as real bone. Also, 87% would be willing to allow their skeleton and family members to be digitalized after death, and 64% advocated the controlled dissemination of replicas through registration and login and context description association (84%). Overall, the results suggest agreement in disseminating 3D digital replicas of human bones. On a final note, the limited number of participants may be interpreted as a lack of interest in the topic or, more importantly, a low self-assessment of their opinion on the subject.</p>
