Life cycle inventory database for consumption in Quebec - Personal hygiene

These inventory datasets are essential for calculating the environmental impacts of an individual’s consumption in Quebec.

Led by the CIRAIG, in collaboration with ESG-UQAM, this project aims to develop an inventory database of the life cycle of consumption in Quebec. These inventory datasets are essential for calculating the carbon footprint of an individual’s consumption in Quebec. The inventory is developed with a life cycle approach. Ultimately, it allows for evaluating carbon footprints at every step of the consumption life cycle (extraction of primary sources, transformation, transport, use of goods and services, end of life). The inventory is developed in a modular fashion for the different areas of individual consumption as Food; Transport; Housing; Clothing; Travel; Communications; Entertainment and Culture; Financial and Administrative Management; Health, Hygiene, and Beauty. These areas are developed and detailed as a priority, as they contribute most to an individual’s carbon footprint in Quebec. Other non-priority areas are roughly modelled in order to provide a complete (but more uncertain) portrait of individual consumption. The project is underway and the deliverables will be made available online as things progress. It is not, however, an objective of the project to create a carbon footprint calculation tool at the moment.

https://ciraig.org/index.php/project/life-cycle-inventory-database-for-consumption-in-quebec/

washopenresearch: Dataset about open research data information in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

The goal of washopenresearch is to provide an overview of open research data related to Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). The package provides access to two datasets `washdev` and `uncnewsletter`. Each dataset collects information on scientific articles about (1) article metadata (e.g. title, first author, correspondence author), (2) supplementary material information, (3) data availability statement, and (4) semantic information (e.g. keywords).

Challenges faced by adolescent girls on Menstrual Hygiene Management: School-based study, Siha, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) has received increasing attention as a public health issue globally. Governments and stakeholders have started to engage communities to address barriers and challenges faced by adolescents in and out of school. This study, conducted in Siha District, northern Tanzania, responds to the call for evidence sensitive to local barriers and challenges to inform successful strategies in MHM.

Methods:

Institutional-based cross-sectional study which involved 400 school girls aged 10 to 19 years old who attained menarche were randomly selected in four secondary and advanced level government schools from September 2019 to January 2020. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis were employed. A P-value less than 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.

Results:

Among all the girls who participated in the study 30% reported missing school due to menstruation while 56% of the girls reported using toilets as changing places at school. The use of reusable sanitary material was 52% compared with non-reusable materials which was 48%. In urban areas, 34.5% of students reported missing school due to menstruation compared to 25% who reported in rural areas. The findings show that school absenteeism among adolescent girls during menstruation is significantly associated with a headache (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.3 (95% CI:1.32 – 8.23)) and abdominal waist pain (AOR = 8.50 (95% CI: 6.27 – 15.56)), lack of changing rooms in school (AOR = 5.85 (95% CI: 4.82 – 7.93)). In addition, the high cost of sanitary pads was mentioned as one of the main reasons for students not using sanitary pads.

Conclusion:

This study calls for promoting MHM-friendly practices in schools to create a supportive and conducive learning environment for adolescent girls. Ongoing school infrastructure improvements such as the construction of classrooms and toilets in schools should include the construction of proper changing places to reduce the number of adolescent girls who miss school due to menstruation.

Mother-to-daughter transmission of hygiene in mandrills

Social animals are particularly exposed to infectious diseases. Pathogen-driven selection pressure has thus favoured the evolution of behavioural adaptations to decrease transmission risk, such as "social distancing". Yet, such strategy might deprive individuals from valuable social interactions, generating a cost-benefit trade-off between pathogen avoidance and social opportunities. Recent studies revealed that hosts differ in the expression of these behavioural defences but the determinants driving such inter-individual variation remain poorly understood. Using 5 years of detailed behavioural and parasite data obtained on a large natural population of non-human primates, we show that, during grooming interactions, some female mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) consistently avoid their conspecifics' peri-anal region, where oro-faecally transmitted gastro-intestinal parasites accumulate, while others do not. This hygienic trait is further highly repeatable across the years and hygienic females are less parasitized on average than non-hygienic females. While age, dominance rank and sociality level do not influence hygienic tendencies, close maternal kin exhibit similar levels of hygiene suggesting social inheritance from mothers to daughters. Our study thus emphasizes that social inheritance of hygienic tendencies may structure behavioural resistance to pathogens in host populations, with unforeseen consequences on the dynamics of infectious diseases.
