Data from: Systematics of Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium (Hymenophyllaceae) in Taiwan

—Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium, composed of the taxonomically notorious H. polyanthos and approximately 15 other closely related taxa, are common elements of filmy fern communities in the tropical and subtropical moist forests. In Taiwan, although only H. polyanthos and one or two closely related taxa were recognized in recent studies, considerable morphological variation has been observed among populations throughout the island. Thus, we conducted an extensive morphological investigation, as well as a molecular phylogenetic analysis to clarify the specific diversity and phylogenetic relationships within subg. Mecodium in Taiwan. Field and herbaria surveys helped in recognizing five morphs in Taiwan, mainly differentiated by the combination of certain traits, viz., the presence or absence of stipe wings, general frond size and shape, degree of laminar crispation, sori position, and involucre shape. The different morphs had diverse ecological preferences. The phylogenetic tree, inferred from the sequence of plastids rbcL and rps4-trnS, demonstrated that subg. Mecodium materials in Taiwan comprise several well-supported lineages, mostly corresponding to the classification based on morphology. Comparing with the protologues and type specimens of 34 related scientific names, the five morphs are herein recognized as five independent species. A new species, H. exquisitum, is described here. Also, the status of H. paniculiflorum is reconfirmed and that of H. fujisanense, H. parallelocarpum, and H. punctisorum reinstated Only H. exquisitum and H. parallelocarpum are endemic to Taiwan among all the species studied. In addition, the names Hymenophyllum blumeanum, H. integrum, H. microsorum, H. polyanthos, H. tenellum, and H. wrightii are now excluded from the regional flora, and several related taxa from China, Taiwan, and the Philippines treated as synonyms. This study unravels the deep phylogenetic relationships within the subg. Mecodium in Taiwan and Eastern Asia.

Data for: Systematics and taxonomy of the Hymenophyllum polyanthos (Sw.) Sw. complex in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Domain

Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium is subcosmopolitan and comprises ca. 35 species. Its neotropical species are poorly known taxonomically. The high degree of morphological similarity among the species and the absence of clear characters to distinguish them has confounded taxonomic treatments, resulting in the lumping of many putative segregate taxa into a broadly circumscribed Hymenophyllum polyanthos species complex. The goal of the present study was to analyze morphologically and phylogenetically the species of Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium in the Atlantic Forest domain. Morphological studies were conducted utilizing traditional stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses were performed using plastid data for seven markers: atpB, atpB-rbcL, matK, rbcL, rbcL-accD, rps4, and rps4-trnS. Seven independent lineages were identified in this study, while morphological analysis supported the delimitation of five taxa within the Atlantic Forest domain: Hymenophyllum apiculatum, H. polyanthos, H. schomburkii, H. undulatum, and, H. viridissimum. One taxon, Hymenophyllum sturmii is recognized as a cryptic species, formed by two independent evolutionary lineages, and treated here provisionally as the H. sturmii complex. A taxonomic revision for the six taxa occurring in the Atlantic Forest domain is presented, including seven new lectotypifications, along with an identification key, descriptions, and illustrations for the species. We also provide data regarding the geographical distribution and conservation status of these six species.

Data from: Hymenophyllum subg. Hymenophyllum (Hymenophyllaceae) in the Brazilian Atlantic forest

A revision of the species of Hymenophyllum subg. Hymenophyllum in the Brazilian Atlantic forest domain is presented. Morphological and molecular analyses were performed, based on herbarium material and samples collected during fieldwork. For the molecular analyses, data of the plastidial markers rbcL, rbcL-accD, rps4-trnS and trnG-trnR were used. The analyses demonstrated the existence of three distinct and independent lineages of subgenus Hymenophyllum in Atlantic forest domain. Three taxa were recognized: H. fucoides, H. megachilum, and an additional new species, H. bradeanum, a narrow endemic to the Itatiaia Massif, southeastern Brazil. Distribution maps, identification keys, descriptions and illustrations are present, together with an update of the conservation status of the species.
