Species richness and abundance of benthic infauna found in lagoons along the Beaufort Sea Coast, 2018-ongoing

Quantitative benthic invertebrate surveys can be used to characterize and compare benthic community structure of nearshore Arctic lagoon systems. The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (BLE LTER) Core Program employs spatial sampling to compare benthic community structure among lagoon systems along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea coast and temporal sampling to track benthic community structure across the three major seasons of the Arctic (ice cover, break up, and open water). Ponar grabs, hollow-core drills (SIPRE corer), and 0.5 mm sieves are employed to quantitatively sample meiobenthic and macrobenthic communities during all three Arctic seasons. All invertebrate specimens are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, preserved in 100% ethanol, and enumerated. Wet weights in ethanol are also recorded.

Infauna from the York River Estuary, Chesapeake Bay, Spring Fall 2022

Sediment macroinfauna were sampled at 7 sites in the York River Estuary in Spring and Fall, 2022, as part of a project relating infaunal community structure to physical properties of sediments.

Sediment organic matter and infauna at eight sites on the Virginia Coast, 2016 and 2019

To determine how oysters impact the spatial distribution of infauna and sediment composition through ecosystem engineering, we sampled 8 intertidal mud- flats adjacent to oyster reefs in coastal Virginia, USA. This work describes how local site characteristics, including distance to oysters, elevation, and hydrodynamics, influence infaunal community structure and sediment composition.

High-marsh infauna densities within references and ice-rafted sediment deposits, Rowley, MA.

Following a historic bomb cyclone (Winter Storm Grayson) in January of 2018, a large volume of ice-rafted sediment was patchily deposited on the surface of salt marshes in the Great Marsh, MA. In May of 2018, twenty patches of ice-rafted sediments and paired reference sites (i.e., no sediment deposition) were delineated. In May 2018, August 2018, and August 2019, samples were collected to examine how ice-rafted sediments affected vegetation, infauna, and epifauna recovery over time. This specific dataset focuses on infauna species counts, with the primary species including: mites, Manayunkia aestuarina, and Cernosvitotviella immota. This dataset is complete and please see our publication (https://doi.org/10.1007/s12237-021-01023-z) for more information.
