A non-parametric model-free analysis of actigraphic recordings of acute insomnia patients
Both parametric and non-parametric approaches to time series analysis have advantages and disadvantages. Parametric methods, although powerful and widely used, can yield inconsistent results due to the oversimplification of the observed phenomena, they require the setting of arbitrary constants for their creation and refinement, and, although these constants relate to assumptions about the observed systems, it can lead to erroneous results when treating a very complex problem with a sizable list of unknowns. Their non-parametric counterparts, instead, are more widely applicable but present a higher detrimental sensitivity to noise and low density in the data. For the case of approximately periodic phenomena, such as human actigraphic time series, parametric methods are widely used and concepts such as acrophase are staple in chronobiology; in this work we present a non-parametric method of analysis of actigraphic time series from insomniac patients and healthy age-matched controls, the method is fully data-driven, reproduces previous results in the context of sleep-onset delay and, crucially, extends the concept of acrophase not only to circadian but also for ultradian spectral components.

Workplace bullying and insomnia

We analyze short (diary) and medium-term (monthly) associations of workplace bullying with insomnia through depression rumination with two different study designs. We also address how this situation may affect the partner’s sleep problems. In the first dataset (daily diary) we used a diary design and collected data from 147 employees over 5 consecutive working days (N= 735 occasions). The second dataset (monthly) we used a longitudinal design and collected data among 139 couples (N= 278 employees) over 4 waves, time lag of two months (N= 1112 occasions).

Proteomics study of Mongolian medicine warm acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia

Warm acupuncture therapy is a traditional external therapy method that has a definite clinical effect in the treatment of insomnia, but the underlying neural molecules regulation research remains limited. iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics to find proteins that are potential neural molecules involved in the treatment of insomnia by Mongolian medical warm acupuncture. In this study, 6383 proteins were identified, including 45 proteins with increased expression and 31 proteins with decreased expression in M compared to C, 101 proteins showed an increase and 48 proteins showed a decrease from W compared to C, 26 proteins showed an increase and 22 proteins showed a decrease from W compared to M. GO and KEGG analysis showed that warm acupuncture treatment of insomnia was closely related to metabolism and hormone synthesis. Different expression proteins showed that increase/decrease expression included albumin (ALB), Pro-MCH (PMCH), Acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase (AACS), N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor NSF (NSF), Potassium/sodium hyperpolarization-activated cyclic-nucleotide gated channel 4 (HCN4) and Anamorsin (Ciapin1) would be the important proteins for warm acupuncture to treat insomnia. The iTRAQ-based proteomics data analyses presented here elucidate variations of the proteomics involved in the treatment of insomnia by Mongolian medical warm acupuncture.
