Differential Interferogram of the Lefkada 17 November 2015 Earthquake

On the 17th of November 2015, an earthquake of Mw 6.4 hit the western Greek island of Lefkada, located in Ionian Sea, an area that is well known for its active tectonics. A second earthquake of Mw 5.0 successively followed. These events induced rock falls and landslides having as consequences two life losses and extensive damages to roads and buildings.
Shortly after the events, BEYOND acquired a set of Sentinel-1 TOPSAR scenes, one before and one after the event. The images were combined to form an interferogram that depicts ground deformation due to the earthquake events.
The fringes of the preliminary interferometric results, which are under further elaboration, reveal ground deformation of the order of ~20cm along the Line of Sight at the western part of Lefkada Island. As smaller deformation field is also apparent at the northern part of Cephalonia Island.

Deep learning based automatic grounding line delineation in DInSAR interferograms

This dataset contains a small subset of the AIS_cci GLL product, which covers several key glaciers and the corresponding HED-delineated grounding lines generated from our automatic delineation pipeline. A description of the attributes of the AIS_cci GLL product is provided in the Product User Guide. We do not indicate the split of the interferograms into training, validation and test sets as the complete AIS_cci dataset is not open-access.

We also provide eight double difference interferograms at 100 m pixel size to demonstrate the generation of the features stack. Please note, eight samples are not sufficient to train the neural network to achieve the delineation capability described in our work.

The "UUID" attribute in both GeoJSON files is an identifier that links the vector geometries to the interferogram TiFF files.

Differential Interferogram of the September 16 2018 Mw 5.3 earthquake Lake Muir, Perth, Australia

A moderate earthquake of Mw 5.3 (ML 5.7) occured on September 16 2018 near the Lake Muir region, Perth, SW Australia. Despite Australia being in a mostly stable continental interior, moderate or strong shallow crustral earthquakes occured the past years. Due to shallow faulting and low relief/semi-arid conditions in most regions of Australia, even moderate events lead to surficial deformation in form of mapped surface ruptures or deformation identified by radar satellites (InSAR).

The Sep.16 earthquake produced a distinctive surficial deformation pattern, identified in an interferometric pair of Sentinel-1 Copernicus radar images (Descending orbit, September 14 - September 26). Sentinel-1 TOPS Interferogram and Line-of-Sight (LOS) displacement were produced using SNAP and DIAPASON tools in the Geohazards Exploitation Platform. Color fringes on interferogram represent each a ~2.8cm displacement. Displacement (unwrapped) grid files are also provided.

InSAR analysis show co-seismic rupture along a NNE-SSW reverse fault plane, consistent with published moment tensors (USGS). LOS profiles show a 5-15cm displacement across a fault rupture that propagated to the surface. Hundreds of metres of fractures and surface ruptures were reported by local farmers' accounts and photographs to the ABC South West Australia news agency.

DIAPASON S1 Interferogram Japan Earthquakes April 2016

Sentinel-1 interferogram generated in the cloud on the Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP), the initiative developed by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The interferogram was generated on the platform and shows the ground displacement caused by the earthquakes that struck Japan in mid-April 2016. Two major earthquakes caused significant damage in and around the city of Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu in southwest Japan. The first quake occurred on Thursday 14 April with a magnitude of 6.2 and was followed by several aftershocks until the bigger 7.0 magnitude quake on Friday 15 April which led to the earlier, smaller event to be reclassified as a foreshock. Both events are included in the period covered by the interferogram made with two Sentinel-1 images: one on 08 April (prior to the events), the other on 20 April 2016.

The epicentres of the earthquakes were relatively close to the surface, at a depth of about 10 kilometres. According to the USGS the shallow depth and faulting mechanism of these earthquakes indicate that they occurred on a crustal fault within the upper Eurasia plate. In contrast to this recent sequence of shallow earthquakes, most seismicity in the Kyushu region is related to the subduction of the Philippine Sea plate at depth.

The two earthquakes killed more than 40 people and caused several structures to collapse. The resulting landslides have destroyed roads and communities.

February 2017 Western Turkey Earthquake Swarm Sentinel-1 TOPS Differential Interferogram (20170131-20170212)

In february 2017 a series of earthquakes affected the Biga Peninsula in Western Turkey. Over 350 buildings sustained extensive damage. The seismic events occurred at the intersection of the Kestanbol Fault and the Edremit Fault Zone. The Sentinel-1 TOPS co-seismic interferogram was generated with the ESA SNAP toolbox (http://step.esa.int/).

S1A data were downloaded from the Sentinel-1 Scientific Data Hub: S1A_20170131-S1A_20170212 from ASCENDING orbit 131.
