Raw measurements data of piezo actuator displacements, in a form of a groove pattern, obtained with a laser interferometer and a roundness instrument

A brief description of the repository content

The data presented here were obtained during an experimental calibration of the Taylor Hobson 130 (Leicester, UK) roundness instrument with the Thorlabs LPS710M (Thorlabs, Newton, NJ, USA) piezo actuator driven by Thorlabs PPC001 Piezo Controller and controlled with Kinesis® (Thorlabs) software. Before the calibration, the piezo actuator itself was calibrated with the Renishaw XL-80 interferometer system (Renishaw, Wotton-under-Edge, UK) along with the Renishaw small optics kit (A-8003-3244). These data are included in the repository as well.

Description of the dataset

Inside the .zip file, the data obtained with the Renishaw XL-80 laser interferometer and the Taylor Hobson 130 roundness instrument are stored in the “Renishaw_XL-80” and “Taylor_Hobson_130” folders, respectively. Each of these folders contains six subfolders: “0.24um”, “0.75um”, “2.4um”, “7.5um”, “24um”, and “75um”, which include the measurements data obtained with these devices (not simultaneously) while Thorlabs LPS710M piezo actuator was performing displacements simulating a groove pattern. The names of subfolders correspond to the groove’s depth.

The data from the measurements performed with the Renishaw XL-80 interferometer were exported with the Laser XL system’s software and are saved with the extension “.RTX”. Two data files are available for each depth being considered that correspond to two measurement series. Inside each file, 40 s recording is stored. Eight grooves should be visible (nominal values: 1.5 s groove width, 3 s distance between subsequent grooves). The data were acquired with a 50 kS/s sampling rate.

The data from the measurements performed with the Taylor Hobson 130 roundness instrument were exported with the Ultra® (Taylor Hobson) software and are saved with the extension “.SBF”. 30 data files are available for each depth being considered - 15 files for each of two measurement series. Inside each file, 10 s recording is stored. Two grooves should be visible (nominal values: 1 s groove width, 4 s distance between subsequent grooves). The data were acquired with a 360 S/s sampling rate.

Caution:

No synchronisation between the piezo actuator and XL-80 interferometer or Taylor Hobson 130 roundness instrument was used. Thus, the first or the last groove within the response to the simulated pattern might be too short to be considered valid.

The square excitation of the piezo actuator was used. Thus, ringing oscillations near the grooves’ edges are present.

The motion of the piezo actuator might happen to be initiated while the acquisition already had started. Thus, the first response inside each file should be analysed carefully.

The piezo actuator did not hold time dependencies properly. The widths of simulated grooves usually differ from their nominal values to some extent.

Acknowledgement

This dataset was obtained within the 18RP01 ProbeTrace project. This project (18RP01 – ProbeTrace) has received funding from the EMPIR programme co-financed by the Participating States and from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Project title: Traceability for contact probe and stylus instrument measurements
Funder name: European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR)
Funder ID: 10.13039/100014132
Grant number: 18RP01 ProbeTrace
Link to project homepage: http://probetrace.org/

Data set from "A free-space interferometer design for optical frequency dissemination and out-of-loop characterization below the 10^{-21}-level"

The data set contains the data underlying the improved out-of-loop interferometer layout performance evaluation published in Photonics Research (https://doi.org/10.1364/PRJ.485899). The experimental setup and the methodology used is explained in that publication.

The data is stored in the Matlab(R)-native file format. This proprietary file format is also readable by other numerical computing environments.

The files 'data_i_*_S*.mat' contain the timeseries of the analysed continuous measurement runs in configuration S*. Each of these files includes the following variables:

year, month, day, hour, minute, second: date at which the measurment point was acquired
rem_float, rem: observed 1s Lambda-averaged out-of-loop frequency deviation in Hz as float and string, respectively
p: measured air pressure in hPa
T: measured laboratory temperature inside the cover close to the interferometer in °C
pressure_phase_OOL: phase variations of the out-of-loop signal estimated from the measured pressure variations
temp_phase_OOL: phase variations of the out-of-loop signal estimated from the measured temperature variations

Different barometers have been used for the pressure mesaurements. In the measurement runs for the S1 and S2PM configurations, a barometer placed in a neighboring laboratory in the same building at PTB was used to characterize pressure fluctuations. For the measurement in the S2 configuration, we used air pressure data from the climate station of the department of Hydrology and River Basin Management of the Technical University Braunschweig, which is ≈6km apart. At times of overlapping operation, we have observed matching pressure instabilities of both barometers for averaging times 𝜏>1000s, which shows that on these averaging times the exact placement of the barometer is of lesser importance.

Application of inverse theory for high spatial resolution reconstructions of thermospheric vector wind fields from Doppler shifts measured by a ground-based network of all-sky Fabry-Perot interferometers

Several types of all-sky viewing Fabry-Perot Interferometers (FPI) have been developed since the 1990s for ground-based remote sensing of thermospheric winds. The Scanning Doppler Imager (SDI) is one such instrument, which provides temporally simultaneous line-of-sight observations from hundreds of independent look directions per instrument exposure. A geographically distributed network of such instruments increases spatial coverage and, at many locations, also provides overlapping observations along multiple independent lines-of-sight. Together, these characteristics significantly increase the density and fidelity that is possible for reconstructed thermospheric vector wind fields, compared to a traditional narrow-field FPI, but at the cost of complexity and difficulty.

Presently, we describe an application of inverse theory to reconstruct three-component vector thermospheric neutral wind fields using data from multiple SDI instruments. The salient features of the method used here are the ability to reconstruct three-component winds on a dense grid that is sampled regularly in latitude, longitude, and time, without assuming any a-priori underlying structure of the winds. This requires solving an inverse problem that does not in general yield a unique solution unless additional constraints are enforced. We describe this step, also known also as regularization, along with the strategy used to maximize the spatial resolution of the derived wind fields by automatically determining the minimum level of regularization that can produce stable inversions. We present example results obtained from applying this technique to one night of data from a network of SDIs in Alaska, and discuss the implications of these results for current understanding of thermospheric dynamics.
