Mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, stable isotope ratios for carbon and nitrogen from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant experiment along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska collected in July, 2011
In 1980-1982, six transplant gardens were established along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska from Eagle Creek, AK in the south to Prudhoe Bay, AK in the north. Three sites, Toolik Lake (TL), Sagwon (SAG), and Prudhoe Bay (PB) are north of the continental divide and the remaining three, Eagle Creek (EC), No Name Creek (NN), and Coldfoot (CF), are south of the continental divide. Each garden consisted of 10 individual Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks transplanted back to their home-site, as well as 10 individuals from each of the other transplant sites. The gardens were harvested in 2011. Important variables are garden name, source population, mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, and stable isotope ratios for Carbon and Nitrogen.
Greenup values for interior alaska 1976 - Present
Greenup, the frequent rapid transformation of Interior Alaska from Brown space to spring green as the leaves deciduous trees burst forth, is suddenly enough to allow assignment of a single date in a given area to this culmination of a key biological process. Greenup is important for more than just an aesthetic or biological perspective. For example, once Greenup has occurred, there is a rapid increase in evapotranspiration. Which in turn has important consequences in the areas mesoscale meteorology. Here, dates for green around Fairbanks for more than 20 springs are correlated against several different temperature derived indices calculated entirely from routinely available climatological data. We examined a variety of degree day statistics and temperature thresholds. The relationships between these parameters and Greenup dates in Interior Alaska should be useful in projecting future greenup dates. They may also be useful to post analyze Greenup dates in years for which there is meteorological data but no surviving record of Greenup dates.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Tree Inventory Data from 1989 to present at Core research sites in Interior Alaska
This is the data from the periodic (3-10 yr interval) tree inventory monitoring of tree growth within the vegetation control plots. In 2013 and 2014, an initial tree inventory was done on each site belonging to the Regional Site Network (RSN). Some young RSN sites had no, or very few trees. In general, inventory is every 5 years presently; the most recent collection was in 2018 and next scheduled collection is for 2023.

Phenology of flowers and leaves following experimental warming in the initiation and maturation years for 7 understory boreal plants at the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research (BNZ LTER) site in Interior Alaska: 2017-2019
This dataset contains the results of experimental warming of flower and leaf buds for 7 understory boreal plants: Rhododendron groenlandicum, Rosa acicularis, Rubus chamaemorus, Shepherdia canadensis, Viburnum edule, Vaccinium uliginosum, and Vaccinium vitis-idaea. Plants in two cohorts were subjected to one of four treatments: warming in the initiation year (the year prior to flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in the maturation year (the year of flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in both years, or no warming (controls). The timing of flowering (both cohorts) and leaf-out (usually one cohort) was monitored. We also tracked developmental stages of the flower bud primordia using repeated desctructive sampling followed scanning electron microscopy throughout the initiation years. Environmental data associated with the plots, including air temperature throughout the summer, soil temperature and depth of ground thaw in late May, and canopy cover, are also reported.

Sites are categorized by region (recent/ongoing spruce beetle oubreak or endemic spruce beetle population levels) and treatment type (hand-thinned or mechanincally felled and masticated). These observations are from July-August 2023. Sites are located near communities in Interior Alaska and the Cook Inlet Region.
Soil carbon stabilization along productivity gradients in interior Alaska: Summer 2003
Boreal forests in a warmer future climate are likely to exhibit altered productivity levels, tightened fire return intervals, and increased decomposition rates to varying degrees across the landscape. This research focuses on mechanisms of soil C stabilization in P. mariana systems along gradients in stand productivity. Charred material in the soil will be quantified to understand the lasting effect of fire on the stabilization of soil C. The interaction between temperature and productivity in relation to the stabilization of soil C will be investigated by monitoring climate and soil temperatures along the productivity gradients and through laboratory incubations of soil. Research questions are addressed in three main areas of inquiry: 1) how the interaction between stand production and landscape position effect the stabilization of C throughout the soil profile, 2) how the contribution of burn residues to total C accumulation varies across the landscape, and 3) the relationship between aboveground productivity and burn residues across the landscape. The overall goal is to apply an understanding of the biophysical controls on C storage in the boreal forest to the landscape level.

Survey of Aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) Oviposition Per Leaf Sampled in Interior Alaska Aspen Stands near Fairbanks from 2004 to 2022
The datasets contains annual counts of aspen leaf miner eggs, incipient mines, and egg scars (indicating egg predation) on aspen leaves over time. There are two files representing pilot data from 2004-2005 and data 2006-2022. The 2004-05 dataset does not include egg scars, indicaitive of egg removal, and therefore totals underestimate total oviposition. The 2006-2022 dataset does include egg scars and therefore can be used to estimate total oviposition per leaf.
