Climatology of deep O+ dropouts in the night-time F-region in solar minimum measured by a Langmuir Probe onboard the International Space Station
<p>Dataset contains data pertaining to an accepted JGR Space Physics article of the same name as the dataset. The dataset contains the high level data that were used to generate Figs 2-5 in the aforementioned paper. </p> <p>The observations recorded by ISS FPMU will be uploaded to NASA SPDF as well. Data files for Atmospheric Gravity Wave and Instability Observations from the International Space Station using the Near InfraRed Airglow Camera (NIRAC)
<p>The files in this set are data obtained from the NIRAC airglow imager on the International Space Station. The files are named for a JGR paper by J. Hecht et al. entitled Atmospheric Gravity Wave and Instability Observations from the International Space Station using the Near InfraRed Airglow Camera (NIRAC). These files are for plots in Figures 5,7,10,11,17,18, and 19 in the submitted paper. The files are published here so as to be available for review. This paper should appear in JGR Atmospheres sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. The files that are text files are meant to be read with IDL as discussed in the readme file. </p>
VNMPF-LIS: Validation Network Multiplatform Precipitation Feature (VNMPF) Dataset with International Space Station Lightning Imaging Sensor (ISS LIS) Data
<p>The Multiplatform Precipitation Feature (MPF) database combines ground- and space-based precipitation observations and retrievals from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Validation Network (VN) with space-based lightning measurements from the Lightning Imaging Sensor on board the International Space Station (ISS LIS). The data are synthesized in a thunderstorm-like, feature-based framework that encapsulates the microphysical, kinematic, and electrical properties of the observed storm.<br> <br> A VNMPF includes:</p> <p>- Radar information, GPM orbit, and ISS orbit <br> - Time/date information<br> - Geographical information<br> - Radar reflectivity characteristics<br> - Lightning energetic and identification information (where there is lightning)<br> - 3-dimensional wind information (where radars in dual-Doppler configuration are available)<br> <br> Version 1: 2017-2020</p> <p>Version 2: 2017-2022, updated VN winds </p>

International Space Station conditions alter genomics proteomics and metabolomics in Aspergillus nidulans
The first global genomic proteomic and secondary metabolomic characterization of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans following growth onboard the International Space Station (ISS) is reported. The investigation included the A. nidulans wild-type and three mutant strains two of which were genetically engineered to enhance secondary metabolite production. Whole genome sequencing revealed that ISS conditions altered the A. nidulans genome in specific regions. In strain CW12001 which features overexpression of the secondary metabolite global regulator laeA ISS conditions induced the loss of the laeA stop codon. Differential expression of proteins involved in stress response carbohydrate metabolic processes and secondary metabolite biosynthesis was also observed. ISS conditions significantly decreased prenyl xanthone production in the wild-type strain and increased asperthecin production in LO1362 and CW12001 which are deficient in a major DNA repair mechanism. These data provide valuable insights into the adaptation mechanism of A. nidulans to spacecraft environments.
Effect of a 91 day long stay in weightlessness on the International Space Station on mouse skin physiology
Comparative gene expression in skin between mice maintained in microgravity (0g) and normogravity (1g) environment. Six male C57Bl/J10 mice were housed for 91 days in the specially designed Mouse Drawer System in weightlessness aboard the International Space Station. Three wild-type mice (WT) and three transgenic mice overexpressing the osteogneic factor PTN/OSF1 under the control of the human bone specific ostecalcin promoter (Tg) were used in the experiment. During the 3-month stay on the ISS 3 mice unfortunately died leaving 2 Tg and 1 WT. MDS tissue sharing program allowed several teams to study various tissues from these mice. Our aim was to investigate the effect of such a long period of microgravity on skin physiology by morphological biochemical and genomewide analyses by comparison to similar mice on ground. Gene expression in the skin of 3 space mice and of 3 ground mice was analyzed by microarray. As this unique experiment performed on 3 mice limits the power of statistical analyis as the transgene PTN/OSF1 was not overexpressed in skin and as a pair wise Pearson s correlation rates between the individual levels of expressed transcripts in the WT and the Tg mice were not significantly different from each other in one experimental group (space or ground) data from the 3 mice were combined to compare results from the space an ground groups.
Effects of a Closed Space Environment on Gene Expression in Hair Follicles of Astronauts in the International Space Station
In recent times long-term stay has become a common occurrence in the International Space Station (ISS). However adaptation to the space environment can sometimes pose physiological problems to the astronauts after their return. Therefore it is important to develop healthcare technologies for astronauts. In this study hair an easy-to-obtain sample was identified as the candidate. In order to investigate the genetic changes in human hair during space flight the hair follicles of 10 astronauts were analyzed by DNA microarray and real time q-PCR analyses. Space environment induced gene expression of hair follicles of astronaut was measured 6 differnent times included 2 in flight on orbit. Ten independent experiments were performed on differing astronauts. and the sampling day was differed for each astronaut because of their schedules.

Transcription profiling of Drosophila after exposure to microgravity in the International Space Station and in a microgravity simulator
Larvae-Pupae transition flies (Drosophila) were recovered and transport for 3 days at 12-14C to arrest development until the launch site then exposed to RT (18-20C) for some hours including the launch and trip to the International Space Station then pupae were exposed to microgravity in the ISS for 4 days and a half at 22C. Finally pupae were fixed on acetone and frozen until recovery on Earth. Four groups of samples: 1 ISS (+ground control) as described 2 RPM (microgravity simulator on Earth) as described 3 RPM without constrains (No MAMBA container and only 5 days exposure without cold transport) and 4 centrifuge 10g without constrains control.
International Space Station flight project EXTREMOPHILES
The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique habitat for humans and microorganisms. Here, we report the results of the ISS experiment EXTREMOPHILES, including the analysis of microbial communities from several areas aboard at three time points. We assess microbial diversity, distribution, functional capacity and resistance profile using a combination of cultivation-independent analyses (amplicon and shot-gun sequencing) and cultivation-dependent analyses (physiological and genetic characterization of microbial isolates, antibiotic resistance tests, co-incubation experiments). We show that the ISS microbial communities are highly similar to those present in ground-based confined indoor environments and are subject to fluctuations, although a core microbiome persists over time and locations. The genomic and physiological features selected by ISS conditions do not appear to be directly relevant to human health, although adaptations towards biofilm formation and surface interactions were observed. Our results do not raise direct reason for concern with respect to crew health, but indicate a potential threat towards material integrity in moist areas.
International Space Station - Microbial Observatory of Pathogenic Virus Bacteria and Fungi project
This study investigated the interplay between the microbial community of the International Space Station and its crew. Environmental samples were collected from 8 habitable locations around the ISS. The microbial composition was measured using shotgun metagenomic sequencing and procesed using the Livermore Metagenomics Analysis Toolkit.
['Genomic Characterization and Virulence Potential of Two Fusarium oxysporum Isolates Cultured from the International Space Station']
['Two isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, ISS-F3 and ISS-F4, were cultured from the dining table on the International Space Station (ISS). Genomic analyses using EF-1α sequences, presence/absence of effector proteins, k-mer comparisons, and single nucleotide polymorphisms indicate that these two strains are genomically different from 65 known sequenced strains. Functional analysis revealed that ISS-F3/F4 had higher relative abundances of polyketide synthase domains than a non-plant-pathogenic soil isolate, used for biocontrol properties (Fo47), and a clinical isolate (FOSC-3a). Putative secondary metabolite analysis indicates that ISS-F3/F4 may produce yet-unreported polyketides and nonribosomal peptides. While genomic analysis showed that these ISS strains are unlikely to be plant pathogens, a virulence assay using an immunocompromised Caenorhabditis elegans model of fusariosis revealed that they were virulent and may represent opportunistic pathogens in animals, including humans. However, its effects on the health of immunocompromised humans warrant further study.']
Microbial Observatory (ISS-MO): Molecular characterization of Bacillus issensis sp. nov. isolated from various quarters of the International Space Station
As part of an ongoing effort to catalogue microbial communities inhabiting the International Space Station (ISS) crew-associated environmental samples were collected from the Japanese Kibo Russian and US research modules. Initial analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified 11 Bacillus isolates (two from Kibo Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) four from US Segment Harmony Node 2 and five from Russian Segment Zvezda module sites) all belonging to the Bacillus anthracis-B. cereus-B. thuringiensis group. Isolates were further characterized by whole genome comparative analysis. Each isolate was sequenced assembled and aligned against all members of the B. cereus sensu lato group. Based on genome size estimates (5.2 - 5.3 Mbp) strain nucleotide identity (>99.99%) and maximum likelihood phylogenetic placement all isolates were found to exhibit a very high level of similarity. With respect to gene content all isolates were inspected for cry proteins common to B. thuringiensis as well as toxins specific to B. cereus. No significant hits were found to any known cry genes while full-length matches were found for multiple B. cereus toxin genes. Finally the isolates were closely screened against B. anthracis genomes and no B. anthracis signatures were identified. Notably all isolates contained the plcR ancestral C allele and lacked significant hits to pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids and toxins. The collective results from the analysis confirm that these strains belong to a previously uncharacterized Bacillus species hereafter referred to as Bacillus issensis. The type strain is ISSFR-003T (=NRRL B-65389T= DSMZ 101676T).
Whole Metagenome Profiles of Particulates Collected from the International Space Station
The microbial composition of the International Space Station (ISS) environment is of critical interest due to potential impact of its constituents on human health and operational mission success. This study examined the whole metagenome of ISS microbes at both a species- and gene-level resolution. Air filter and dust samples from the ISS were analyzed and compared to samples collected in a terrestrial cleanroom environment. Samples were collected from ISS and cleanroom environments and treated to examine DNA from total versus viable populations. Microbial genes relevant to human health such as antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes were quantified.
