Delving into the relationship between regular physical exercise and cardiac interoception in two cross-sectional studies.
<p>This repository contains raw data from two studies corresponding to the article "No evidence of a relationship between regular physical exercise and cardiac interoception" by Yoris et al. In Study I, 45 resting EEG files are included for the Active (N = 24) and Inactive (N = 21) groups, both for the eyes closed and eyes open conditions. For Study II, there are 60 resting EEG files (30 Active/30 Inactive). Data are in EEGLAB format .set/fdt. The project is publicly available for free use and can be accessed at <a href="https://osf.io/xrsgn/">https://osf.io/xrsgn/</a>.</p>
Data for: Neuroendocrine gene expression coupling of interoceptive bacterial food cues to foraging behavior of C. elegans
<p>Animal internal state is modulated by nutrient intake, resulting in behavioral responses to changing food conditions. The neural mechanisms by which internal states are generated and maintained are not well understood. Here, we show that in the nematode <em>Caenorhabditis elegans, </em>distinct cues from bacterial food – interoceptive signals from the ingestion of bacteria and gustatory molecules sensed from nearby bacteria – act antagonistically on the expression of the neuroendocrine TGF-beta ligand DAF-7 from the ASJ pair of sensory neurons to modulate foraging behavior. A positive-feedback loop dependent on the expression of <em>daf-7 </em>from the ASJ neurons acts to promote transitions between roaming and dwelling foraging states and influence the persistence of roaming states. SCD-2, the <em>C. elegans </em>ortholog of mammalian Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK), which has been implicated in the central control of metabolism of mammals, functions in the AIA interneurons to regulate foraging behavior and cell-non-autonomously control the expression of DAF-7 from the ASJ neurons. Our data establish how a dynamic neuroendocrine <em>daf-7 </em>expression feedback loop regulated by SCD-2 functions to couple sensing and ingestion of bacterial food to foraging behavior. We further suggest that this neuroendocrine feedback loop underlies previously characterized exploratory behaviors in <em>C. elegans</em>. Our data suggest that the expression of <em>daf-7</em> from the ASJ neurons contributes to and is correlated with an internal state of "unmet need" that regulates exploratory foraging behavior in response to bacterial cues in diverse physiological contexts.</p>
Data set Interoceptive Accuracy Scores from the Heartbeat Counting Task
<p>Interoception, the capacity to perceive internal bodily states, is thought to influence cognitive, affective and interpersonal functioning. It is frequently assessed using the heartbeat counting task, introduced recently in interoceptive research. In this task participants are requested to count their heartbeats without relying on external cues. Interoceptive Accuracy (i.e., IAcc) scores are then computed based on absolute comparisons between actual and reported heartbeats. We uploaded here a large data set that includes the reported and actual number of heartbeats of N = 572 participants who performed the heartbeat counting task for three time intervals of 25s, 35s, and 45s. </p>
Dataset manuscript "Does it Help to Feel your Body? Evidence is Inconclusive that Interoceptive Accuracy and Sensibility Help Cope with Negative Experiences
<p>In four studies (total <em>N</em> = 534), we examined the moderating impact of Interoceptive Accuracy (i.e., IAcc, as measured with the heartbeat counting task) and Interoceptive Sensibility (IS, assessed via questionnaire) on negative affect, following social exclusion or after receiving negative feedback. Results from an integrative data analysis combining the four studies confirmed that the manipulations were successful at inducing negative affect. However, no significant interaction between mood induction (control versus negative affect induction) and interoception on mood measures was observed, and this was true both for objective (i.e., IAcc) and subjective (i.e., IS) measures of interoception. Hence, previous conclusions on the moderating impact of interoception in the relationship between mood induction and self-reported mood were neither replicated nor generalized to this larger sample. We discuss these findings in light of theories of emotion regulation as well as recent concerns raised about the validity of the heartbeat counting task. </p>

Data from: Anterior insular cortex plays a critical role in interoceptive attention
Accumulating evidence indicates that the anterior insular cortex (AIC) mediates interoceptive attention, which refers to attention towards physiological signals arising from the body. However, the necessity of the AIC in this process has not been demonstrated. Using a novel task that directs attention toward breathing rhythm, we assessed the involvement of the AIC in interoceptive attention in healthy participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging and examined the necessity of the AIC in interoceptive attention in patients with AIC lesions. Results showed that interoceptive attention was associated with increased AIC activation, as well as enhanced coupling between the AIC and somatosensory areas along with reduced coupling between the AIC and visual sensory areas. In addition, AIC activation was predictive of individual differences in interoceptive accuracy. Importantly, AIC lesion patients showed disrupted interoceptive discrimination accuracy and sensitivity. These results provide compelling evidence that AIC plays a critical role in interoceptive attention.
Posterior default mode network activity underlies distracted interoceptive attention and provides an objective basis for low mindfulness and depression
<p>Interoceptive attention to internal sensory signals is fundamental to mindfulness. However, it is difficult to measure objectively, and the vast majority of investigations of the neural correlates of mindfulness-based attention rely on subjective and retrospective measures of distraction. In this study, we measured consistency of response times on a breath-monitoring task (instruction to respond every 2 breath cycles) to objectively measure interoceptive attention in individuals across the lifespan (15–91 years of age, n=324). Consistently timed responses were indicative of on-task attention, whereas variable delayed responses indicated distraction or mind-wandering. Signifying the importance of interoceptive attention consistency, we observed that this measure was positively correlated across subjects with performance across several exteroceptive cognitive tasks. Electroencephalographic (EEG) source reconstruction demonstrated that distraction on the eyes-closed task was associated with elevated alpha band (8–12 Hz) brain activity, particularly in posterior default mode network (pDMN) brain regions. The neural data revealed four important findings: 1) pDMN brain activity was inversely linked with functional connectivity to the fronto-parietal network (FPN), suggesting that pDMN-FPN interactions play a key role in the regulation of pDMN activity during interoceptive attention. 2) pDMN activity on distracted trials was inversely correlated with trait-level mindfulness. 3) A key hub of the pDMN, the isthmus region of the posterior cingulate cortex (ICC), showed elevated activity on distracted trials in individuals with self-reported depressive symptoms. 4) In an independent second experiment, pDMN activity was adaptively modulated by task difficulty that invoked different levels of distraction. These results identify an EEG-based neurophysiological marker (elevated pDMN alpha activity) underlying interoceptive distraction, which is correlated with subjective markers of mindfulness and depression and that can be adaptively modulated. Our findings, thus, provide a direct link between a neurophysiological substrate of interoceptive attention, and subjective ratings of mindfulness and depressed mood.</p>
