Building Interprofessional Learning in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implementation of Online Simulation for Students in Health Profession

Abstract

COVID-19 has significantly affected the learning process of health institutions. It is inevitable that face-to-face learning activities will shift to online learning, including Interprofessional Education (IPE). The purpose of this article is to describe our experiences in developing a simulation of a two-day interprofessional learning and teaching session for students in nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, environmental sanitation, medical laboratory technology, dental health, and nutrition. A total of 956 students, 112 lecturers, and 15 standardized patients (SP) took part in this research. The study conducted in 6 schools of health profession in Indonesia. Students were assigned to two simulation models. The data were collected using an online questionnaire with the variables readiness to cooperate, interprofessional group discussions, and facilitator role with a 5-point Likert scale. In the implementation of the two simulation models, significant results have been demonstrated and their uniqueness is revealed. The simulation models that make direct anamnesis of the SP results in a higher level of readiness for IPE learning, and is significantly different. Meanwhile, the simulation model that is preceded by a scenario discussion process before making anamnesis to the SP shows a significantly positive attitude to the interprofessional groups discussion and the role of the facilitator.

Keywords: interprofessional education, COVID-19 pandemic, online simulation, health professionals, standardized patient

Influence of a university cooperation on the development of interprofessional competences

Objectives

This project carried out in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria (UASHPUA) and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University Linz (MFJKUL), describes the feasibility, i.e., the planning and implementation, and presents selected results of an inter-university lecture on interprofessional cooperation.

Methodology

The lecture "Grundlagen zu interprofessioneller Zusammenarbeit im Gesundheitswesen (IPZ3I)" / "Introduction to interprofessional cooperation in health care (IPZ3I)") as well as an interprofessional job shadowing were designed. The pilot lecture started in the winter semester (WS) 2019/20. An evaluation of IPZ3I was undertaken by means of a questionnaire.

Results

IPZ3I was held in WS 2019/20 for 296 students from nine different health care professions and included a specialist lecture, the presentation of the professions, and interprofessional case processing. In the evaluation approx. 80 % of the students described a better understanding of the interprofessional collaboration. More than 70 % regard interprofessional courses in education as important or very important. The majority of respondents indicate that after completing the lecture they can make recommendations for action for interprofessional cooperation.

Conclusions

The joint lecture IPZ3I will be maintained at both universities. The process of evaluation and adaptation of curricula at UASHPUA is currently underway. This includes, for instance, consultations with the curriculum officers at MFJKUL, and the exploration of further possibilities to identify and to implement joint interprofessional teaching aspects in the curricula. This shall be achieved by considering the existing resources, increasing student numbers at MFJKUL as of 2023, planned curricula revisions as well as using possible synergies aiming at an extension of the existing cooperation.

Key words

Interprofessionalism; project description; curriculum development; competency-based education

Exploring the inclusion of dental providers on interprofessional healthcare teams treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a rapid review

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the world. Emerging concepts like One Health, integrated models for COPD, and associations between oral and respiratory health are innovative ways to approach COPD treatment. This study explored contemporary evidence on the inclusion of dental providers on interprofessional healthcare teams treating patients with COPD. The first objective was to explore the current state of interprofessional care for COPD treatment, and the second objective was to explore dentistry used in interprofessional care scenarios. A rapid review was conducted from March–June 2020 using Scopus and PubMed. Upon assessing for duplication and relevance, 85 articles remained for Objective 1, and 194 for Objective 2. The literature strongly suggests that dental providers should be included on interprofessional healthcare teams to best approach COPD as a multi-morbid, chronic disease. The papers collected for review claim that educational and clinical hospital programs should implement interprofessional collaboration when treating chronic diseases. Healthcare teams can utilize the expertise of professionals outside the medical field to better understand their patients' needs. Healthcare administration should consult a One Health framework when developing COPD treatment guidelines. These proposed recommendations are feasible and transferable to the Canadian healthcare system; however, it is anticipated that implementation will be gradual. The collaborative nature of a One Health approach exposes novel ways to develop treatment guidelines that effectively address the burden of COPD.

Interprofessional education in geriatric medicine: towards best practice. A controlled before-after study of medical and nursing student attitudes

Objectives To investigate nursing and medical students' readiness for interprofessional learning before and after implementing geriatric Interprofessional education (IPE), based on interactive case scenarios Problem Based Learning (PBL). To determine optimal number of geriatric IPE sessions, the size and the ratio of participants in the learner groups, the outcomes related to the Kirkpatrick four-level typology of learning evaluation, students' concerns about joint learning, perception of roles of the "other" profession and students choice of topic.

The strength:

• This is a novel evidence regarding good practice for geriatric undergraduate Interprofessional education derived from a large unselected (inclusive) cohort of medical and nursing students

• A controlled before-after study, with students randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups

The limitations:

• The overall number of nursing students was smaller, so the control group consisted of only medical students

• The nursing students had more clinical experience than the medical students at the time of the geriatric IPE

• Not all students returned the feedback forms, complaining that completing both questionnaires was time-consuming
