Zooplankton and macroinvertebrate size spectra, biomass, and community composition; and harvest of bigmouth buffalo and common carp in six shallow lakes in Iowa, USA (2018-2020)

This data product contains biological data collected within six shallow lakes in Iowa, USA between 2018 - 2020, where four lakes were undergoing targeted removals of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus). Parts of these data were a portion of Albright et al. 2022 (https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/1d3797fd573208bae6f78963479445a0), however the data herein include additional survey data from the Ambient Lake Monitoring network instituted through Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (https://www.iowadnr.gov/environmental-protection/water-quality/water-monitoring/ambient-lake-monitoring#ambient-lake-monitoring-sampling-plan). Data are packaged and formatted specifically for size spectra analysis and compositional analysis.

Summer water chemistry; sediment phosphorus fluxes and sorption capacity; sedimentation and sediment resuspension dynamics; water column thermal structure; and zooplankton, macroinvertebrate, and macrophyte communities in eight shallow lakes in northwest Iowa, USA (2018-2020)

The primary aim of this data product is to characterize change in water chemistry, sediment-water interactions, and biological communities in shallow, eutrophic lakes undergoing a fishery biomanipulation. We studied eight glacial lakes located in northwest Iowa, USA, from 2018 to 2020 during the summer season (May to September). A subset of these lakes (n = 4; Center, Five Island, North Twin, and Silver Lakes) were part of a fishery biomanipulation in which the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) incentivized commercial harvest of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus). Harvests occurred in Center and Five Island Lakes during 2018-2019 and in North Twin and Silver Lakes during 2019-2020. Between 73 and 373 kg fish biomass per ha were removed each year. The other study lakes (n = 4; Blue, South Twin, Storm, and Swan Lakes) remained unmanipulated during the study period. Over the course of the biomanipulation, we quantified a suite of physical, chemical, and biological parameters across the study lakes. High frequency aquatic sensors were used to measure water column thermal structure, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and algal pigments. Manual water chemistry sampling further quantified suspended solids, total phosphorus and nitrogen, soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrate, and water clarity. We measured flux rates of phosphorus between bottom sediments and the overlying water using ex situ sediment core incubations under both oxic and anoxic conditions. We further quantified sediment phosphorus sorption capacity using equilibrium phosphorus concentration assays. Tiered sediment traps were used to measure sedimentation rates as well as sediment resuspension in bottom waters. We also measured change in zooplankton, macroinvertebrate, and macrophyte community composition and abundance. Soil organic carbon and nutrient dynamics in response to anaerobic digestate application to farm fields, Eastern Iowa, 2011-2023

This dataset documents a long-term, field-scale study of anaerobic digestate application on commercial croplands in eastern Iowa, USA. It includes detailed records of digestate composition, application rates, and timing, as well as soil test results collected over a 12-year period (2011–2023) from 14 agricultural fields. The dataset supports analysis of soil organic carbon (SOC), nutrient dynamics, and isotopic composition in response to digestate inputs. It contains 421 georeferenced soil samples, digestate nutrient profiles, field management histories, and spatial boundaries. The data were collected as part of a collaborative effort between researchers at Iowa State University and Sievers Family Farms to evaluate the agronomic and environmental implications of integrating anaerobic digestion into row crop and livestock systems.

Data for: Techno-economic analysis of a novel laccase production process utilizing perennial biomass and the aqueous phase of bio-oil, Iowa, USA 2023-2025

This dataset contains the experimental design, measurements, and derived variables used to parameterize a techno‑economic model of laccase production via two‑stage solid‑state fermentation of prairie biomass with bio‑oil aqueous phase induction. It includes nutrient screening data for Pleurotus ostreatus growth on prairie biomass with alternative nitrogen sources and a corn‑steep solids dose series; factorial/response‑surface experiments varying substrate bed depth, substrate‑to‑inoculum (S:I) ratio, and pre‑induction growth time; and time‑resolved induction measurements. For each run and replicate, the data record the full set of spectrophotometric absorbances at 0–210 s, fitted slopes and r-square values, dilution and volume factors, and laccase activities normalized per mL and per gram of biomass, alongside the exact culture timings and environmental conditions used in the ABTS assay at 420 nm. Results tables provide the fitted central‑composite design model terms (coefficients, F‑statistics, and p‑values) used directly as inputs to the minimum laccase selling price (MLSP) calculations, together with the underlying per‑condition raw results.

Summer water chemistry, high frequency sensors, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, periphyton, fish, and macrophyte biomass, along with lake metabolism and greenhouse gas dynamics in six experimental ponds in central Iowa, USA (2020)

This data product contains physical, chemical, and biological data ranging from the minute to daily to weekly scale in six artificial ponds (400 square meter surface area, 2m depth) in central Iowa (USA) 2020. Ponds were paired into three sets of treatment and reference with treatment ponds receiving two nutrient pulses designed to increase ambient phosphorus concentrations ~ 3 - 5%. Nitrogen and phosphorus were added as NH4NO3 and H3PO4, respectively, at a 24:1 molar ratio. The first nutrient pulse occurred on Julian day of year (DOY) 176 corresponding to a 3% increase and the second nutrient pulse occurred on DOY 211 to a 5% increase. Each treatment-reference set had a different food web structure established ranging between low, intermediate, and high complexity based on trophic connectivity and food chain length. Added to this data package is a document titled "2020 Iowa State University Horticultural Farm Experimental Ponds Nutrient Addition Experiment". Spatiotemporal variation in internal phosphorus loading, sediment characteristics, water column chemistry, and thermal mixing in a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA (2019-2020)

The primary aim of the data product is to quantify seasonal and spatial variation in sediment phosphorus fluxes in a temperate reservoir and evaluate mechanisms responsible for instances of elevated sediment phosphorus release. We studied Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA, from 2019 to 2020. We measured sediment phosphorus flux rates and potential explanatory variables at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir over six sampling events during winter and summer stratification as well as mixing events in the spring, summer, and fall. Ex situ sediment core incubations were used to measure sediment P release rates under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions. Explanatory variables measured included sediment phosphorus chemistry, sediment physical characteristics, epilimnetic and hypolimnetic nutrient concentrations, and thermal stratification patterns. These data will be used to identify mechanisms driving hot spots and hot moments of sediment phosphorus release, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry.

Phytoplankton chlorophyll in Iowa state recreational lakes 2018-2020

Chlorophyll a dataset is curated by Phyto-PAM, a multi-wavelength fluorometer that rapidly infers the abundance and composition of phytoplankton communities based on the fluorescence excitation of chlorophyll a and accessory pigments. This dataset categorizes phytoplankton into four taxa: 1) cyanobacteria; 2) ‘Green algae’ (euglenophytes and chlorophytes; 3) ‘Brown algae’ (ochrophytes, dinophytes, haptophytes); and 4) ‘Red organisms’ (phycoerythrin-rich phytoplankton). Sub-surface water samples (n > 450) collected in eutrophic lakes for three summer seasons (2018-2020; 15 weeks per season; from May through September). Summer water chemistry, phytoplankton and zooplankton community composition, size structure, and biomass in a shallow, hypereutrophic reservoir in southwestern Iowa, USA (2019).

This data product contains data for Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa (USA) from the summer of 2019. We sampled and quantified zooplankton, phytoplankton, and nutrient concentrations (total N, total P, soluble reactive P, nitrate) in the lake weekly with the primary aim of assessing consumer nutrient cycling, specifically zooplankton nutrient cycling, in a hypereutrophic reservoir. Weekly plankton sampling included quantifying zooplankton and phytoplankton biomass, community composition, and size structure. Phytoplankton size was measured as the greatest axial linear distance which would be approached by a zooplankton grazer. Allometric equations from the literature were applied to the zooplankton size measurements to estimate zooplankton community excretion of N and P. We found that the estimated contribution of zooplankton excretion to the dissolved P pool was substantial in the spring. Further, we found evidence that zooplankton affected phytoplankton size distributions through selective grazing of smaller phytoplankton cells likely affecting nutrient uptake and storage by phytoplankton.

Assessment of dissolved iron in Iowa lakes

This study assessed the abundance of dissolved iron (DFe) in Iowa’s lakes. The micronutrient iron has been noted to play a crucial role in regulating phytoplankton growth, however most studies have focused on large lakes with persistent phytoplankton blooms that are known to undergo iron limitation, such as Lake Erie. There are few datasets of DFe in lakes, especially those that are smaller and susceptible to phytoplankton blooms. In order to assess the spatial distribution of DFe in lakes throughout Iowa, this study obtained DFe measurements over a suite of recreational lakes over a summer season in 2018. Weekly monitoring of DFe (for 15 weeks) was conducted to assess temporal trends.

Carbon decomposition and nitrogen mineralization in Marsden agroecosystem diversification experiment, Iowa, 2021

This dataset contains measurements of soil carbon decomposition and nitrogen mineralization from 36 soils in the Marsden agroecosystem diversification experiment. Soil samples were collected in fall 2021 from a long-term experiment initiated in 2002 at Iowa State University's Marsden Farm. The dataset includes laboratory data on soil organic carbon (SOC) content, soil total nitrogen content, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of soil, time-series CO2 fluxes from SOC decomposition in a 13.5-month lab incubation, and soil nitrogen mineralization rates. It also provides model simulations of SOC decomposition from different carbon pools using three process-based models: the Agricultural version of the Integrated Biosphere Simulator (Agro-IBIS), CN-SIM, and the Microbial-ENzyme Decomposition (MEND) models.

QPE uncertainty assessment over Iowa

<p>This repository has several Hydrologic discharge simulation runs made using two QPE products (MRMS and IFC) altered by a multiplicative factor oscillating between 0.1 and 5. The simulations are recorded at the USGS gauges with observations in Iowa between 2015 and 2022. Additionally, we included the performance metrics and the code to generate the analysis developed for the manuscript titled: "Assessing the Impact of Radar-Rainfall Uncertainty on Streamflow Prediction."</p> <p>The data on this repo contains three compressed files:</p> <ul> <li><strong>hlm_runs.rar</strong>: Holds the hydrologic model runs using both QPEs and the multiplicative factor.</li> <li><strong>performance.rar: </strong>It has a summary of the performance metrics<strong> </strong>and a folder with the raw performance at each gauge.</li> <li><strong>rainfall.rar:&nbsp;</strong>Has the rainfall computed at each watershed using COOP gauges (folder), as well as the results for MRMS and IFCA?</li> </ul> <p>All the data was stored in <strong>gzip </strong>compressed <strong>parquet </strong>format using <strong>Pandas</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

Measurements of soil nutrient leaching from agricultural depressions and uplands in Iowa, USA

We measured the leaching of nitrate, ammonium, and phosphorus in resin lysimeters installed along topographic transects from depressions to uplands within agricultural fields in Iowa, USA. Lysimeters were each installed for approximately one year. Crops included conventional corn and soybean, corn and soybean with a winter rye cover crop, and corn and soybean fields where depressions were planted with miscanthus. Measurements were made during 2018, 2019, and 2020, although not all transects could be measured each year. There were a total of 28 transect-years that included data from 734 individual resin lysimeters.

Organic and inorganic carbon concentration and stable isotope composition in poorly drained agricultural soils in Iowa, USA

We measured soil organic carbon (SOC) and inorganic carbon (carbonate) in samples collected along topographic gradients in agricultural fields in Iowa, USA, in 2018. We also measured stable isotopes of SOC, soil nitrogen, and carbon in respired CO2 to provide additional context for organic matter dynamics. Additional physical, chemical, and hydrologic variables were measured on these samples and in the field sites to understand mechanisms underlying patterns in soil organic and inorganic carbon.

Effects of drying temperature on potential carbon mineralization and water-extractable organic carbon in Iowa cropland and riparian buffer soils

Measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) produced after re-wetting a previously dried soil is an increasingly popular soil health assay, but there is disagreement on the optimal soil drying temperature. We tested whether soil drying temperature impacts water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and soil CO2 emissions (potential carbon mineralization) following rewetting of dried soil. Samples were collected at four sites in north-central Iowa, US, and each site had soils planted to corn/soybean or perennial vegetation. The dataset includes measurements of WEOC prior to the incubation experiment, and measurements of CO2 flux and its stable carbon isotope ratio over the course of a 28-day incubation. The manuscript describing these data is under review in Geoderma.

Water chemistry data including nitrate stable isotopes sampled from zero-tension lysimeters in an Iowa corn-soybean field in 2017 and 2018

These data were used in the manuscript titled "Mechanisms underlying episodic nitrate and phosphorus leaching from poorly drained agricultural soils" published in the Journal of Environmental Quality. We measured nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate concentrations in zero-tension lysimeters installed along a topographic gradient in a corn and soybean field in north-central Iowa, USA, during 2017 and 2018. We measured nitrate stable isotope compositions in a subset of lysimeter samples. Concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, and ferrous and ferric iron were measured in periodic soil extractions co-located with the lysimeters.

Valuing multiple ecosystem services under contrasting land use scenarios, Grand River Basin (Iowa and Missouri, USA), 2016

This dataset includes spatial and tabular data used to evaluate ecosystem service outcomes under three land-use scenarios (baseline, buffered, and productivity-based) within the Grand River Basin, spanning southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. The dataset comprises geospatial layers and model inputs for land cover, soil characteristics, and hydrology, as well as outputs from the InVEST modeling suite for nutrient delivery ratio, sediment delivery ratio, carbon storage, and pollinator abundance. It also includes financial data used to estimate the net present value of bioenergy grassland systems, including enterprise budgets and biomass yield assumptions. The scenarios simulate the conversion of cropland to native grassland either adjacent to streams (Buffered) or on low-productivity soils (Productivity-based), and the dataset captures associated changes in land cover, ecosystem service indicators, and potential biomass production. Optimizing targeted conservation for disproportionate benefits in the East Big Creek watershed, Iowa, 2019.

This dataset supports spatial conservation planning in agricultural landscapes by providing field-level information on the placement, cost, and ecological performance of perennial conservation practices in the East Big Creek watershed, central Iowa. The dataset includes modeled configurations of prairie strips, riparian buffers, and nutrient-removal wetlands, with associated estimates of nitrate-nitrogen reduction and biodiversity enhancement. These estimates were derived using open-source geospatial tools and publicly available data, including the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework (ACPF) and a modified Healthy Farm Index (HFI). Prairie manure application impacts on floral abundance, plant growth, plant community structure, insect and spider community abundance and activity density in experimental plots in Ames, Iowa (2021-2022).

This dataset contains results from a two-year field experiment at Iowa State University’s Horticulture Research Station to evaluate the effects of dairy manure application on native prairie plant and insect communities. We established replicated 4 m² plots across two field types, an established tallgrass prairie and a tilled crop field, and applied four manure treatments (weekly, biweekly, once per season, and control) using liquid slurry from a local dairy farm. Plant responses were monitored through weekly measurements of mortality, ground cover, floral abundance, plant height, and visual obstruction. Insect communities were sampled biweekly using vacuum suction for foliage and flower visitors and pitfall traps for ground-dwelling arthropods. Collected insects were identified to order, with Hymenoptera and Carabidae further resolved to family or genus.

This dataset contains a series of batch and continuous anaerobic digestion (AD) experiments that document the effects of hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) extraction as a pretreatment strategy for prairie biomass to enhance methane production and digestion performance.
