Techno-economic model of Methane pyrolysis in liquid metal bubble column reactor for hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore

Reducing emissions from the iron and steel industry is essential to achieve the Paris climate goals.A new system to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production is proposed in this article by coupling hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore (H-DRI) and natural gas pyrolysis on the liquid metal surface inside a bubble column reactor. If grid electricity from the EU is used, the emissions would be 435 kgCO\textsubscript{2}/tls without considering methane leakage from the extraction, storage, and transport of natural gas. Solid carbon, produced as a by-product of natural gas decomposition, finds applications in many industrial sectors, including as a replacement for coal in coke ovens. The specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed system is approximately 6.3 MWh per ton of liquid steel(tls). It is higher than other competing technologies,3.48 MWh/tls for water electrolysis based DRI, and 4.3-4.5 MWh/tls for natural gas-based DRI and blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) respectively. The utilization of large quantities of natural gas, where the carbon remains unused, is the major reason for the high SEC. Preliminary analysis of the system revealed that it has the potential to compete with existing technologies to produce CO\textsubscript{2}free steel, if renewable electricity is used. Further studies on the kinetics of the bubble column reactor, H-DRI shaft furnace, design, and sizing of components, along with the building of industrial prototypes are required to improve the understanding of the system performance.

Dataset for Sulfidation of air-stable iron nanoparticles: A novel strategy how to boost their reactivity demonstrated on Cr(VI) reduction

This repository contains data from the manuscript:

Víchová, V., Oborná, J. K., Petr, M., Soukupová, J., Pechancová, R., Pluháček, T., & Filip, J. (2024). Sulfidation of air-stable iron nanoparticles: A novel strategy how to boost their reactivity demonstrated on Cr (VI) reduction. Journal of Water Process Engineering, 67, 106246. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jwpe.2024.106246

Abstract of the manuscript:

Sulfidated zero-valent iron nanoparticles (S-nZVI) have been extensively studied as environmentally promising
alternative material, which enables reduction of variety of extremely dangerous pollutants directly in the
environment. However, synthesis and manipulation with these extremely reactive/pyrophoric nZVI particles
represents a challenge and requires special precautions. In this study, we report a synthesis of S-nZVI from airstable
core-shell nZVI, which reactivity with contaminants and properties are comparable with the commonly
prepared S-nZVI particles (where the precursor was bare/pyrophoric nZVI particles). The undeniable novelty
dwells in the simplicity of the synthetic process, which ensures consequential safe and easy handling, manipulation,
and application of S-nZVI particles. This material, especially highly effective against halogenated organic
compounds and heavy metals, was characterized in detail and its advanced characteristics were evaluated in the
process of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction from model aqueous solutions and polluted groundwater.
The results offer valuable insights into the preparation of a novel nanomaterial with high application potential in
the effective degradation of heavy metals in polluted water. Overall, the novel way prepared S-nZVI particles,
designed for the potential large-scale production, eliminates the drawbacks of S-nZVI synthesized from bare nZVI
particles and offers the effective material suitable for any on-site application.

Raw data of: Changes in magnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles upon microbial iron reduction

The magnetic signals of magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) preserved in rocks, soils, and sediments are effective index for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. It has been demonstrated that magnetite NPs can serve as a terminal electron sink for the microbial respiration (i.e., microbial iron reduction). The magnetic properties of magnetite NPs may be altered by microbial iron reduction, which is a critical but often overlooked process in paleomagnetism. In this study, three magnetite NPs with different particle sizes were reduced by a dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) under a non-growth condition mimicking that of the early Earth and modern oligotrophic environment. The changes in magnetic, chemical as well as crystallographic properties of the magnetite NPs during the microbial reduction process were examined. Our results showed that the bioreduction rate of magnetite NPs was mainly controlled by their particle size and redox state. In addition, the microbial iron reduction could affect both the crystallographic and magnetic properties of three types of magnetite NPs used herein. After bioreduction, the crystal lattice parameters and magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite NPs increased, while their remanence recording capability and coercivity decreased (i.e., "softer" magnetism). Furthermore, bioreduced magnetite NPs had a larger remanence loss near the Verwey transition region with low-temperature magnetic analysis. These results indicate that the microbial reduction of magnetite NPs deserves attention when sedimentary magnetites are used in paleoenvironment reconstruction.
