Data supporting the publication "Many-body quantum sign structures as non-glassy Ising models"

This repository contains all raw data that were used to draw conclusions and generate figures for the paper:

"Many-body quantum sign structures as non-glassy Ising models"
by Westerhout, T., Katsnelson, M. I., & Bagrov, A. A.

Abstract: The non-trivial phase structure of the eigenstates of many-body quantum systems severely limits the applicability of quantum Monte Carlo, variational, and machine learning methods. Here, we study real-valued signful ground-state wave functions of frustrated quantum spin systems and, assuming that the tasks of finding wave function amplitudes and signs can be separated, show that the signs can be easily bootstrapped from the amplitudes. We map the problem of finding the sign structure to an auxiliary classical Ising model defined on a subset of the Hilbert space basis. We show that the Ising model does not exhibit significant frustrations even for highly frustrated parental quantum systems, and is solvable with a fully deterministic O(K log K)-time combinatorial algorithm (where K is the Ising model size). Given the ground state amplitudes, we reconstruct the signs of the ground states of several frustrated quantum models, thereby revealing the hidden simplicity of many-body sign structures.

Experimental realization of the 1D random field Ising model

We have measured magnetic-field-induced avalanches in a square artificial spin ice array of interacting nanomagnets. Starting from the ground state ordered configuration, we imaged the individual nanomagnet moments after each successive application of an incrementally increasing field. The statistics of the evolution of the moment configuration show good agreement with the canonical one-dimensional random field Ising model. We extract information about the microscopic structure of the arrays from our macroscopic measurements of their collective behavior, demonstrating a process that could be applied to other systems exhibiting avalanches.

Data from: Cell death and survival due to cytotoxic exposure modeled as a two-state Ising system

Cancer chemotherapy agents are assessed for their therapeutic utility primarily by their ability to cause apoptosis of cancer cells and their potency is given by an IC50 value. Chemotherapy uses both target-specific and systemic-action drugs and drug combinations to treat cancer. It is important to judiciously choose a drug type, its dosage, and schedule for optimized drug selection and administration. Consequently, the precise mathematical formulation of cancer cells response to chemotherapy may assist in the selection process. In this paper, we propose a mathematical description of the cancer cell response to chemotherapeutic agent exposure based on a time-tested physical model of two-state multiple-component systems near criticality. We describe the Ising model methodology and apply it to a diverse panel of cytotoxic drugs administered against numerous cancer cell lines in a dose-response manner. The analyzed dataset was generated by the Netherlands Translational Research Center B.V.(Oncolines). This approach allows for an accurate and consistent analysis of cytotoxic agents' effects on cancer cell lines and reveals the presence or absence of the bystander effect through the interaction constant. By calculating the susceptibility function, we see the value of IC50 coinciding with the peak of this measure of the system's sensitivity to external perturbations.

Data for: The kinetic Ising model encapsulates essential dynamics of land pattern change

A land pattern change represents a globally significant trend with implications for the environment, climate, and societal well-being. While various methods have been developed to predict land change, our understanding of the underlying change processes remains inadequate. To address this issue, we investigate the suitability of the 2D kinetic Ising model (IM), an idealized model from statistical mechanics, for simulating land change dynamics. We test the IM on a variety of patterns, each with different focus land type. Specifically, we investigate four sites characterized by distinct patterns, presumably driven by different physical processes. Each site is observed on eight occasions between 2001 and 2019. Given the observed pattern at the time $t_i$ we find two parameters of the IM such that the model-evolved land pattern at $t_{i+1}$ resembles the observed land pattern at that time. The data supports simulating seven such transitions per site.

Our findings indicate that the IM produces approximate matches to the observed patterns in terms of layout, composition, texture, and patch size distributions. Notably, the IM simulations even achieve a high degree of cell-scale pattern accuracy in two of the sites. Nevertheless, the IM has certain limitations, including its inability to model linear features, account for the formation of new large patches, and handle pattern shifts.

Data and Code associated to the paper "Quantum simulation of the tricritical Ising model in tunable Josephson junction ladders"

Modern hybrid superconductor-semiconductor Josephson junction arrays are a promising platform for analog quantum simulations. Their controllable and non-sinusoidal energy/phase relation opens the path to implement nontrivial interactions and study the emergence of exotic quantum phase transitions. Here, we propose the analysis of an array of hybrid Josephson junctions defining a 2-leg ladder geometry for the quantum simulation of the tricritical Ising phase transition. This transition provides the paradigmatic example of minimal conformal models beyond Ising criticality and its excitations are intimately related with Fibonacci non-Abelian anyons and topological order in two dimensions. We study this superconducting system and its thermodynamic phases based on bosonization and matrix-product-states techniques. Its effective continuous description in terms of a three-frequency sine-Gordon quantum field theory suggests the presence of the targeted tricritical point and the numerical simulations confirm this picture. Our results indicate which experimental observables can be adopted in realistic devices to probe the physics and the phase transitions of the model. Additionally, our proposal provides a useful one-dimensional building block to design exotic topological order in two-dimensional scalable Josephson junction arrays.
