OpenITI: a Machine-Readable Corpus of Islamicate Texts
<p><strong>Co-PIs</strong>: Matthew Thomas Miller (University of Maryland, College Park), Maxim G. Romanov (University of Hamburg), Sarah Bowen Savant (Aga Khan University—ISMC, London).</p> <p><em>Open Islamicate Texts Initiative</em> (<strong>OpenITI</strong>, see <a href="https://openiti.org/">https://openiti.org/</a>) is a multi-institutional effort to construct the first machine-actionable scholarly corpus of premodern Islamicate texts. Led by researchers at the Aga Khan University, Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC), University of Hamburg (UH), and the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland (College Park) and an interdisciplinary advisory board of leading digital humanists and Islamic, Persian, and Arabic studies scholars, <strong>OpenITI</strong> aims to provide the essential textual infrastructure in Arabic, Persian and other Islamicate languages for new forms of textual analysis and digital scholarship. In the process, OpenITI will enable new synergies between Digital Humanities and the inter-related Islamicate fields of Islamic, Persian, and Arabic Studies. In addition to support from the researchers’ home institutions, it is supported by funding from the <a href="https://erc.europa.eu/">European Research Council</a> under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, awarded to the <a href="http://kitab-project.org/">KITAB</a> project (Grant Agreement No. 772989, PI Sarah Bowen Savant) and the <a href="https://www.qnl.qa/en">Qatar National Library</a>.</p> <p>Currently, <strong>OpenITI</strong> contains almost exclusively Arabic texts, which were first assembled into a corpus within the <strong>OpenArabic</strong> project, developed first at Tufts University (at <em>The Perseus Project</em>, 2013–2015) and then at Leipzig University (at the Alexander von Humboldt Chair for Digital Humanities, 2015–2017)—in both cases with the support and under the patronage of Prof. Gregory Crane. The much more limited number of Persian texts were compiled during 2015–2016 in the Persian Digital Library (PDL) pilot (see <a href="https://persdigumd.github.io/PDL/">Persian Digital Library by PersDigUMD</a>) at Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland. These texts have not been made fully compatible with OpenITI mARkdown yet and will be made fully available in next releases.</p> <p>This release contains all digital versions of the same text that are available in the OpenITI corpus . <strong>We also release a <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7764025">'primary' version of the corpus</a></strong> that contains a single digital version for each text in the corpus that is marked as 'PRI' in the corpus metadata and may be more convenient for some use cases.</p> <p><strong>Note on Release Numbering</strong>: Version <strong>2019.1.1</strong>—where <strong>2019</strong> is the year of the release, the first dotted number—<strong>.1</strong>—is the ordinal release number in 2019, and the second dotted number—<strong>.1</strong>—is the overall release number; the first dotted number will reset every year, while the second one will continue on increasing.</p> <p>For more details: <a href="https://github.com/OpenITI/RELEASE">https://github.com/OpenITI/RELEASE</a></p> <p><strong>Note: </strong>In case of any issues with unzipping the files on Windows using built-in utilities, please use free softwares, such as WinRAR and 7zip.</p> <p> </p>
Islam West Africa Collection (IWAC)
<p>Directed by <a href="https://www.frederickmadore.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frédérick Madore</a>, the <a href="https://islam.zmo.de/s/westafrica/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Islam West Africa Collection</em> (IWAC)</a> is a collaborative, open-access digital database that currently contains over 5,000 archival documents, newspaper articles, Islamic publications of various kinds, audio and video recordings, and photographs on Islam and Muslims in Burkina Faso, Benin, Niger, Nigeria, Togo and Côte d'Ivoire. Most of the documents are in French, but some are also available in Hausa, Arabic, Dendi, and English. The site also indexes over 800 references to relevant books, book chapters, book reviews, journal articles, dissertations, theses, reports and blog posts. This project, hosted by the <a href="https://www.zmo.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO)</a> and funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Science, Health and Care, is a continuation of the award-winning <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207083222/https://islam.domains.uflib.ufl.edu/s/bf/page/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Islam Burkina Faso Collection</em></a> created in 2021 in collaboration with <a href="https://librarypress.domains.uflib.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LibraryPress@UF</a>.</p> <p>This dataset contains all the metadata of the items in the Collection, the Jupyter notebooks that were used to create the visualisations that showcase the possibilities of <a href="https://islam.zmo.de/s/westafrica/page/digital-humanities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digital humanities</a> with the IWAC, and a copy of the spreadsheets that were used to create the <a href="https://islam.zmo.de/s/westafrica/page/exhibits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digital exhibits</a> using <a href="https://timeline.knightlab.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Timeline JS</a>.</p>

<p>This is a partial release of the data in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3082463">OpenITI corpus</a>. Whereas the main release of the corpus often contains multiple digital versions of the same text, this release contains a single digital version for each text in the corpus (the version marked as "primary" (PRI) in the corpus metadata).</p> <p>The version numbers corresponds to the versions of the main releases.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>
Interview Data: Nativism, Islamophobism and Islamism in the Age of Populism dataset
<h1><strong>Interview Data</strong></h1> <h2><strong>Nativism, Islamophobism and Islamism in the Age of Populism dataset</strong></h2> <p>Transcripts of 302 interviews conducted with self-identified Muslim youth of migrant origin and native youth with affiliation or sympathy with movements labeled far-right in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany.<a title="" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1">[1]</a> Local researchers conducted the interviews using the same interview guide, including 17 questions. Interviews were not audio-recorded. The researchers took notes, verifying their transcriptions with the research participant during and after the interview. Originally, the research consisted 307 interviews but five participants (1 French native; 2 German Muslims; 2 German natives) did not want their interview transcriptions to be made public on the ERC data repository site. In accordance with our ethical guidelines, we anonymized the transcripts. The dataset also includes the summary output (as an excel file) of the values analysis of the 307 interviews. Please visit the attachment named Data Summary to learn more about our method of analysis and how to use the attached documents. <p>Second place in the 2021 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Wide star fields.</p> <p>This panoramic dawn image shows the majestic band of the Milky Way – our home Galaxy – made up of a few hundred billion stars, among other structures, most of which are not detectable by our eyes, or in some cases even directly with telescopes. The appearance of the band is because the Milky Way is a disc-shaped galaxy, and we (Earth/Solar System) are situated within the disc.</p> <p>Diverse cultures and traditions around the world each have their own name and cultural stories for the Milky Way. The dark regions visible in the Milky Way are large, dense, cool nebulae (clouds of dust and gas), which obscure the light from stars in the Milky Way. The Indigenous Australians associate stories with the dark patches of the Milky Way, one of the most prominent being the Emu in the Sky (called Tchingal in Wotjobaluk country). In and around the band of the Milky Way there are a vast range of star clusters, two familiar ones are M6 (Butterfly cluster) and M7 (Ptolemy’s cluster).</p> <p>The bright point just above the horizon is the planet Venus (known to the Boorong people of Indigenous Australia as Chargee Gnowee, elder sister of the Sun). Within the band of the Milky Way the brightest point in the image is the planet Jupiter (called Ginabongbearp, the Sulphur-crested white cockatoo by the Boorong). The planet Saturn is the bright point between Venus and Jupiter (closer to Venus than Jupiter).</p> <p>There are two constellations and one asterism that can be easily discerned in the image: Aquila, Scorpio (Maui’s Hook), and Teapot (asterism in Sagittarius). In this image, the center of the Milky Way at an approximate distance of 26,000 light years from Earth, is located roughly to the top right of the Teapot spout.</p> <p>The bright red-orange point to the right of Jupiter is the red supergiant star Antares and is part of the constellation Scorpio (known as Maui’s Hook in Māori and Polynesian cultures). This variation in the colour of stars is the result of temperature of the stars (lower temperature stars are redder, higher temperatures stars are bluer).</p> <p>Credit: Amirreza Kamkar/IAU OAE</p>
