A Metadata Application Profile for KOS Vocabulary Registries

This paper reports on the end-products of a Dublin Core Application Profile for KOS Resources (KOS-AP) developed by a DCMI Task Group, which builds on work done by the NKOS group during the last decade. Included are user scenarios, a FRBR-based domain model, the attributes of KOS work, expression, and manifestation and the associated metadata elements defined in the context of user tasks. With the testing of real KOS systems that involve multiple editions, languages, delivery formats, and derivations, (such as the Dewey Decimal Classification 22nd edition and of the ASIS Thesaurus 3rd edition), the authors identified some unique issues related to KOS descriptions, for example the designation of a 'work' in theory and practice, and the shift of management level from the whole KOS expression to concept- and label-based electronic systems. This KOS-AP effort is becoming more meaningful with the fast development of Linked Data, the success of which depends heavily on the sharing of standardized value vocabularies. The theoretical exploration, the conceptual model, and the core elements to be used for describing and accessing KOS products can be implemented by KOS registries and used in microdata of KOS Websites, as well as be adopted for use by other types of specifications that share common characteristics of KOS, such as frequently updated, translated, and derived handbooks, technical manuals, and schemas.

What KOS can do, with the proper tools available. About AGROVOC, edited in VocBench and used in the AGRIS web application

The AIMS (Agricultural Information Management Standards) team in FAO has been working for the last 12 years towards two goals:
● using Knowledge Organization Systems to create better Information
Systems, and
● developing tools to maintain and produce better Knowledge Organization
Systems.
Our talk will initially demonstrate AGRIS, the International Information System for Agricultural Science and Technology. AGRIS has been developed
from a bibliographical database to a Linked Open Data application with more than 6 million web pages on topics from Agricultural Science and Technology.
This development was made possible by exploiting the various Knowledge Organization Systems embedded in the bibliographical database, most
notably AGROVOC. Parallel to creating AGRIS Linked Open Data we developed the VocBench, an advanced tool to maintain and improve SKOS
vocabularies (and more). The newest feature of the VocBench is now the automatic alignment of different vocabularies. Our talk will show the
advanced features of VocBench, and also the underlying philosophy and community.

ISO 25964: a standard in support of KOS interoperability

ISO 25964: Information and documentation – Thesauri and interoperability with other vocabularies will be a two-part standard that updates and revises the existing international standards for monolingual and multilingual thesauri. And not just that: it should also help thesauri to play their full part in access to networked resources, particularly in a Semantic Web context. Part 1 (dealing with the development and establishment of thesauri) is on track for publication in 2011, while Part 2 (focusing on interoperability) is scheduled for completion in 2012. A large part of the content is intended to standardize mapping between one vocabulary and another.
