Tree phenology and abiotic variables 1998-2017 at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda

<p>Fruit production in tropical forests varies considerably in space and time, with important implications for frugivorous consumers. Characterizing temporal variation in forest productivity is thus critical for understanding adaptations of tropical forest frugivores, yet long-term phenology data from the tropics, in particular from African forests, are still scarce. Similarly, as the abiotic factors driving phenology in the tropics are predicted to change with a warming climate, studies documenting the relationship between climatic variables and fruit production are increasingly important.  Here we present data from 19 years of monitoring the phenology of 20 tree species at Ngogo in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Our aims were to characterize short- and long-term trends in productivity and to understand the abiotic factors driving temporal variability in fruit production. Short-term (month-to-month) variability in fruiting was relatively low at Ngogo, and overall fruit production increased significantly through the first half of the study. Among the abiotic variables we expected to influence phenology patterns (including rainfall, solar irradiance, and average temperature), only average temperature was a significant predictor of monthly fruit production. We discuss these findings as they relate to the resource base of the frugivorous vertebrate community inhabiting Ngogo.</p>

Data for: Associations between faecal chemical pollutants and hormones in primates inhabiting Kibale National Park, Uganda

<p>While anthropogenic pollutants are known to be a threat to primates, our understanding of exposure to pollutants <em>in situ</em>and their sub-lethal effects is still limited. We used noninvasive biomonitoring to examine associations between fecal concentrations of 97 chemical pollutants and fecal hormone metabolites of cortisol and estradiol in four primate species inhabiting Kibale National Park, Uganda (chimpanzees - <em>Pan troglodytes</em>, olive baboons - <em>Papio anubis</em>, red colobus - <em>Piliocolobus tephrosceles</em>, and red-tailed monkeys - <em>Cercopithecus ascanius</em>). Across all species (n = 71 samples), our results demonstrated positive associations of organochlorine pesticides (<em>ß</em> = 0.143, p = 0.020) and organophosphate esters (<em>ß</em> = 0.112, p = 0.003) with cortisol in adult females. Additionally, we observed positive associations of organochlorine pesticides (<em>ß</em> = 0.192, p = 0.013) and brominated flame retardants (<em>ß</em>  = 0.176, p = 0.004) with cortisol in juveniles. Our results suggest that cumulative pesticides and flame retardants are disruptive to endocrine function in these populations, which could have implications for development, metabolism, and reproduction. Our results further demonstrate that feces can be an important, noninvasive matrix for examining pollutant-hormone associations in wild primates and other critical wildlife populations.</p>

Transect and plot data from: Fruit trees drive small-scale movement of elephants in Kibale National Park, Uganda

<p>Understanding what motivates animal spatial behavior requires discerning the relationship between animals and the landscape in which they move. Many studies have focused on large scale trends that drive migrations and movement across broad landscapes, but few studies have focused on drivers of local movement within smaller areas based on fine–scale landscape heterogeneity. This is especially true for African elephants (Loxodonta africana), whose movements in relation to landscape variables have frequently been studied across vast areas, but infrequently on a small scale.  We report on how the local distribution of an important resource—fruit trees—shapes elephant movement patterns in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We hypothesized that the spatial location of elephant trails, and especially intersections in the network of trails, would be heavily associated with fruit trees, with trail density being higher in areas with greater fruit availability. Elephant trails and nearby fruit trees were mapped within a 64-km2 area within the interior of the Park. Trail and fruit tree sampling were conducted along sixteen evenly spaced one-km control transects and compared to 28.6 km of elephant trails arrayed throughout the park. Fruit tree basal area was higher along trails and at trail intersections. Trail density was also positively correlated with fruit tree density. Fruit trees may thus serve as a determinant of small-scale elephant movement and could be used to predict patterns of elephant spatial behavior across forested habitat, which has potential implications for elephant management in the area.  </p>
