Brick Kiln Dataset for Pakistan's IGP Region Using AI

This dataset represents the first geospatial mapping of brick kiln sites in the IGP region of Pakistan, providing an invaluable resource for understanding the spatial distribution of these sites. Each data point captures a brick kiln's precise location, including coordinates, state, and other important information, standardized in Coordinate Reference System (CRS) EPSG:4326 (WGS 84). This dataset, to the best of our knowledge, is the first of its kind to consolidate and geolocate brick kiln operations across this region, where air pollution impacts from kiln emissions are a significant environmental and public health concern.

In addition to the primary geolocation data, the dataset also includes an initial, secondary estimation of emissions (PM10, PM2.5, NOx, and SOx) from these sites. This supplementary information supports preliminary risk assessments, emphasizing proximity-based exposure for populations and sensitive areas (e.g., schools, hospitals) within a 1 km radius of each kiln site.

The dataset is made available in multiple formats to facilitate wide usage across spatial analysis platforms:

Geojson (.geojson)

Shapefile (.shp)

Comma-Separated Values (.csv)

Metadata:

Geographic Coverage: IGP - Pakistan

CRS: EPSG:4326 (WGS 84)

Data Structure:

"Main" files have Basic ID & Location information, while the "Emission" files have Basic ID & Location + Production & Emission information.

Basic ID & Location

id
: Unique identifier for the kiln.

lat
: Latitude of the kiln location.

lon
: Longitude of the kiln location.

state
: State where the kiln is located.

type
: Type of kiln (e.g., FCBK).

Production Data

avg_bricks
: Average number of bricks produced daily. BRAIN Journal-Participative Teaching with Mobile Devices and Social Networks for K-12 Children-Figure 2. An experiment with sunken up-draught kilns, carried out by Professor Dragoş Gheorghiu in Vădastra

The second stage was represented by the physical reconstruction at real scale of a prehistoric house and of a corner of a Roman villa rustica, designed and coordinated by Professor Dragoş Gheorghiu. In these physical reconstructions video recordings and photo shoots were produced by specialist members of the project team, in order to be used later as augmentations in the AR application and for distribution by means of SNS.

BRAIN Journal-Participative Teaching with Mobile Devices and Social Networks for K-12 Children-Figure 4. Augmented Reality with video movie and social media (a vertical loom in front of two reconstructed kilns and a wall of a Roman villa rustica)

The third stage was represented by the 3D virtual reconstruction process of the historical contexts, in our case a prehistoric village and a complete Roman villa rustica, with the help of students from the Design Department, NUA, coordinated by Professor Arch. Andreea Hasnaş. The AR application was created and tested on two commercial AR platforms, Layar and Junaio, and recently moved on the Aurasma platform (https://www.aurasma.com/). The POIs were augmented with the 3D virtual reconstructions, and also with 2D images and videos representing 3D virtual tours and technological processes (Figures 3, 4, 5). The AR application was connected to teachers’ emails and to Twitter, Facebook and Google+ project’s pages.

Toorlectra - Lime kiln example 2

Lime kilns were structures in which limestone was heated to a high temperature to produce quicklime. lime kilns were filled from the top, and could also be unloaded from the top, access to the top was necessary. Therefore, kilns were generally constructed on either a rock face or earthen bank to permit this. Ramps were sometimes built to allow access. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Kiln Barn - Raiders Road

A 3D model of a kiln barn at Upper Gairloch, on the Raiders Road that runs through the Galloway Forest Park. We cleared off vegetation and investigated through the excavation of test pits by local volunteers in March 2019 as part of the Can You Dig It community archaeology project. The kiln barn was first shown as a ruin on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey of 1852 so may date to the early 19th or late 18th centuries. The kiln was used to dry cereal crops, such as corn or oats, and the barn may have been used for either storage or possibly threshing.
