Kusunda - Raw sound files
<p>This data set contains the raw sound files of the interviews held with the last two Kusunda speakers from Nepal, Gyani Maiya Sen Kusunda and Kamala Khatri (Sen Kusunda), late July and early August 2019, in Kathmandu Nepal.</p> <p>There are a total of 79 files recorded with a Tascam handheld audio recorder, with a total length of 20 hours 40 minutes. There is elicitation of word lists and verbal paradigms; conversation between the two speakers; personal narratives; an origin story; retold stories from picture books; and comments on earlier video and audio recordings.</p> <p>The processed sound files and the associated video files and other information will be uploaded here in Zenodo in due course of time.</p> <p>This research was funded by a 2,000 USD grant from the Endangered Language Fund (<a href="http://www.endangeredlanguagefund.org/">http://www.endangeredlanguagefund.org/</a>), a 700 euro contribution by the European Research Council Starting Grant 715618 “Computer-Assisted Language Comparison” ( <a href="http://calc.digling.org/">http://calc.digling.org</a>), and a total of 2,320 euros raised through crowdfunding at GoFundMe (<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/saving-the-kusunda-language-in-nepal">https://www.gofundme.com/f/saving-the-kusunda-language-in-nepal</a>). Kusunda 250 Word List Audio Files
<p>This data set contains 2 zip files and 3 pdf files containing the cut sound files of the elicited 250-concept word list (plus numerous additional concepts and lexical items) recorded with the last two Kusunda speakers from Nepal, Gyani Maiya Sen Kusunda and Kamala Khatri (Sen Kusunda), on in late July and early August 2019, in Kathmandu, Nepal.</p> <p>As per our knowledge, these are the first recordings of Kusunda that are available in the public domain.</p> <p>The zip files, when unpacked, will reveal several hundreds of cut sound files. At least the concepts from the list are triple repeated. There are also numerous additional concepts on recording. The pdf files contain explanations regarding the elicited concepts as well as the way in which the forms of the two speakers were used to come to an underlying form, a 'reconstruction' of some sorts. </p> <p>The file numbers of the individual sound files refer to both the speakers (GM, K), to the date of recording and the exact origin file number. More information regarding a certain concept or pronunciation can be found in these respective origin sound files.</p> <p>Please note that the actual transcriptions in IPA may differ between the file names of the individual sound recordings, the individual speaker's pdf file, and the aggregated pdf file. <p>This map shows the approximate migratory route that the two remaining bands of Kusunda people took around the turn and into the first quarter of the 20th century, with the center in Balkōṭ, formerly in Gulmī district, now in Arghākhām̐cī. As the members of the exogamous Kusunda clans in these bands did not find suitable partners to marry, they had to marry sedentary partners of other ethnic and caste groups. Gradually, all Kusunda settled down, and the present Kusunda population in the various districts of western Nepal still reflect the old migration pattern. </p> <p>This map was created by Yeshy T. Sotrug based on analysis by Timotheus A. <p>This data set contains 17 audio files and 16 video files of the interviews held with the last two Kusunda speakers from Nepal, Gyani Maiya Sen Kusunda and Kamala Khatri (Sen Kusunda), on July 29th 2019, in Kathmandu, Nepal.</p> <p>As per our knowledge, these are the first recordings of Kusunda that are available in the public domain. Transcribed and Translated Kusunda Recordings
<p><strong><span>Kusunda Data</span></strong></p> <p><span>These data were collected by Uday Raj Aaley and Tim Bodt, with cooperation from videographer Sonam Tashi Chhumare, between July 29<sup>th</sup> and August 12<sup>th</sup>, 2019, in Sitapaila, Kathmandu, Nepal. </span></p> <p><span>The two resource persons are the then last two speakers of Kusunda, Gyani Maiya Sen Kusunda (speaker code: GM) and Kamala Khatri (Sen Kusunda) (speaker code: K). Several months after these recordings were made, Gyani Maiya passed away.</span></p> <p><span>The transcriptions in IPA and the Nepali translations were made by Uday Raj Aaley, while English translations were provided by Tim Bodt with assistance from Chungda Chhumare.</span></p> <p><span>These transcribed and translated recordings have a total length of 1 hour, 57 minutes and 29 seconds.</span></p> <p><span>The metadata of the individual recordings are provided in the table below.</span></p> <p><span>For the time being, these data will remain under a restricted access regime. We will only provide access to (parts of) this deposit upon specific written request. Anyone with a genuine interest in these data can submit such a request to </span><a href="mailto:bodttim@gmail.com"><span>bodttim@gmail.com</span></a><span> (Tim Bodt), with CC to </span><a href="mailto:aarambhkhabar@gmail.com"><span>aarambhkhabar@gmail.com</span></a><span> (Uday Raj Aaley). Every request will be judged on an individual basis. We expect anyone requesting access to provide a full justification of their interest in the data, including at a minimum: their name and occupation; their (academic) background and affiliation; their purpose of requesting access to the data; the project, project duration, project objectives and project funding for which they will use the data; and the individuals who will work with these data. We expect everyone accessing these data to: fully acknowledge the speakers and the transcribers/translators of the recordings; not share these data beyond those individuals mentioned as part of the project; not use the data for purposes other than stated in the project; and not in any way commercialise these data or the project outcomes based on them.</span></p> <p><span>We ideally would share the recordings, transcriptions and translations with a PhD student or a postdoc on a dedicated, fully funded project who will further analyse them to augment the existing descriptions of Kusunda, in particular, Watters (2006). We are also happy to share these data (for example, transcripts of the recordings and their translations) with ethnographers, anthropologists and others interested to learn more about the Kusunda culture and history.</span></p> <p><span> </span></p> <p><span>The data are contained in zip files that most commonly consist of an .eaf ELAN project file, an .pfsx ELAN preferences file, an .mp4 video file, a .wav sound file, and one or several a .doc Word files with the initial transcription and translation. We will add these ELAN files as and when we complete them. These recordings are mostly comments on children’s picture books. Kusunda Audio and Video Files Day 3 31072019 - Part 1
<p>This data set contains 8 audio files in this first part and 44 video files (21 files in this first part and 23 files in the second part, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3384958) of the interviews held with the last two known Kusunda speakers from Nepal, Gyani Maiya Sen Kusunda and Kamala Khatri (Sen Kusunda), on July 31<sup>st</sup>, 2019, in Kathmandu, Nepal.</p> <p>As per our knowledge, these are the first recordings of Kusunda that are available in the public domain. The recordings constitute mainly of word list elicitation files with Kamala (also in the second part, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3384958), but there is also Gyani Maiya’s story of how they used to live in the forest (till she was 19 years old - in part 2, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3384958).
