Nutrient Network (NutNet) basic sampling at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER in summer 2019.

NutNet is a distributed ecological experiment with a sampling component and an experiment. The goal of this work was to conduct the NutNet sampling protocol at the GCE site. Bonanza Creek LTER: Active Layer Depth or Permafrost Presence for the Regional Site Network

The initial goal (2000-2013) of these data was to define the presence/absence of permafrost within 2.5m of the surface in the regional site network. Efforts were focused mainly on sites where this was not easily deduced. The final subset of sites (2015 � present) are distributed across the 3 ecoregions of the RSN and primarily in older aged wet sites. The permafrost distribution in interior Alaska is discontinuous and dynamic; susceptible to fire and climate disturbances. Therefore, sites included in this long-term monitoring dataset may cease to be monitored as permafrost degrades and disappears or may be monitored again if permafrost is reestablished.

Arts and humanities in the LTER Network: understanding extent, values, and challenges by assessing the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network, 2013-2014

The Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is a collection of 25 National Science Foundation-funded sites committed to long-term, place-based investigation of the natural world. While activities primarily focus on ecological research, arts and humanities inquiry emerged in 2002 and since then a substantial body of creative work has been produced at LTER-affiliated sites. These art-humanities-science collaborations parallel a wider trend in universities and nonprofits. However, there is little empirical work on the value and effectiveness of this work. After launching a survey in 2013 to assess the values and challenges associated with arts and humanities in the LTER Network, which identified empathy as a meaningful potential outcome of this creative work, we conducted a follow-up analysis to understand: the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network; the role of empathy in bridging arts, humanities, and science collaborations; and the capacity of empathy to connect wider audiences both to LTER science and to the natural world. Our research included phone interviews with representatives from 15 LTER sites and an audience perception survey at an LTER-hosted art show. We found that arts-humanities-science collaborations have great potential to catalyze relationships between scholars, the public, and the natural world; cultivate inspiration and empathy for the natural world; and spark awareness shifts that can enable pro-environmental behavior. Our research demonstrates the potential for art-humanities-science collaborations to facilitate conservation attitudes and action in the Network and beyond.

Monthly precipitation data from a network of standard gauges at the Jornada Experimental Range (Jornada Basin LTER) in southern New Mexico, January 1916 - ongoing

This ongoing dataset contains monthly precipitation measurements from a network of standard can rain gauges at the Jornada Experimental Range in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. Precipitation physically collects within gauges during the month and is manually measured with a graduated cylinder at the end of each month. This network is maintained by USDA Agricultural Research Service personnel. This dataset includes 39 different locations but only 29 of them are current. Other precipitation data exist for this area, including event-based tipping bucket data with timestamps, but do not go as far back in time as this dataset.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Sensor Network: Bottom-mounted CTD Data - GUMPR, 2006-2012

Physical oceanographic data from bottom-mounted instrumentation (Seabird 16+ CTD) were sampled year-round on Gump reef in Cooks Bay on Moorea, French Polynesia (GUMPR site). Sampling began in 2006 until early 2012. The CTD measured conductivity, temperature, pressure, from which density and salinity were calculated. Data were collected every 5 minutes, processed and reported every 20 minutes. The instrument is mounted 2 m above the bottom in 6 m of depth. These data streamed near real-time as part of the Digital Moorea project (no longer active.) Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly means were calculated for temperature, salinity, and density. This is a completed timeseries which ended early 2012. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2018). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.

Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Site Boundaries

This is a set of Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site boundaries preserved as a shapefile. Note that for some sites “real” boundaries are included while others–particularly marine sites–use a simpler bounding box method. Each site is listed both with its three-letter abbreviation and its unabbreviated name. World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) is the coordinate reference system used (EPSG:4326). More information about any of the sites can be found on the LTER Site Profiles page on the LTER Network website (https://lternet.edu/site). This data product was made possible by the contributions of the Information Managers for the LTER sites, each of whom contributed their sites' boundaries. The data for each site separted by 16 fuel types (or plant functional types) including organic soil layers (fibric, mesic), vascular understory (evergreen shrub, short deciduous shrub, graminoid, forb, tall deciduous shrub, tree seedling/sapling, dead-downed wood), nonvascular understory (feather moss, Sphagnum moss, colonizer moss, lichen) and trees (evergreen tree, deciduous tree).

Daily precipitation from a network of weighing rain gauges on the Jornada Experimental Range (Jornada Basin LTER), 1976-2011.

This completed dataset contains daily precipitation measurements from a network of weighing rain gauges (Belfort Universal Precipitation Gauges, Series 5-780) at 58 locations on the Jornada Experimental Range in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA between January 1976 and December 2011. Locations and the dates during which data were collected were generally project-oriented. Temporal coverage per location is quite variable and ranges between 1,647 and 13,024 days. The network was maintained by USDA Agricultural Research Service personnel. After 2011 the remaining weighing rain gauges were replaced by tipping bucket gauges and those data are available separately.

Institutional Collaboration in the US LTER Network based on bibliometric information (1981-2018)

This is a dataset of supplementary materials of an accepted article in Bioscience entitled "Collaboration across time and space in LTER Network". It is based on the bibliography data maintained by LTER Network Office (https://www.zotero.org/groups/2055673/lter_network/items). The analysis was carried out in 2019 with the updated data collecting from individual sites. The dataset contains the basic information that the analysis relies on, and the temporal and spatial patterns of institutional collaboration in the US LTER Network.

The two species, Hylocomium splendens and Vaccinium uliginosum, are the two most ubiquitous nonvascular and vascular species at these sites. The traits measured on these species relate to the fire ecology of each species. Traits measured for Hylocomium splendens include: length, width, aspect ratio (width/length), specific leaf area (SLA) and moisture content % at maximum water retention capacity. There is a corresponding dataset with trait data for Vaccinium uliginosum.

Congruence checks for EML-described datasets in the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network, Checks described as of 2015

These data are descriptions of all checks contributed to the LTER EML Congruence Checker as of late 2015. The EML Congruence Checker (ECC) informs contributors about the structure of the data package, indicating whether the asserted metadata accurately defines the data entity (table); this is called “structural congruence”. The checks and checking software are discussed in O'Brien, M. C, D. Costa and M. Servilla. 2016. Ensuring the quality of data packages in the LTER network data management system. Ecological Informatics. DOI: 10.1016/j.ecoinf.2016.08.001. Data are organized into a flat table, with one row per check. Each check is characterized with multiple typologies including priority, justification, scope (community), response behavior type and data packaging aspect. Operational information for software includes EML path, criteria for pass/fail, response expected, sample datasets for both pass and fail responses, with failure notes. Management fields indicate if the check has been implemented or not (as of paper publication), with dates when the check was added or updated.
