National price indices of materials and labor in Spain
<p>The national materials and labor price index in Spain provides a comprehensive measure of the costs associated with construction and industry in the country. This unique index reflects fluctuations in the prices of a wide range of materials, such as glass, chemicals, wood, aluminum, copper, steel materials, plastic products, spotlights and luminaires, ceramics and others, as well as the labor costs associated with the workforce in these sectors. For each material we have a month-by-month index starting from 2012 until a couple of months in 2023, the data until 2021 were validated by the INE<a href="https://www.ine.es/index.htm">(Instituto Nacional de Estadística)</a></p>

Occupations on the map: Using a super learner algorithm to downscale labor statistics, data
<p>This repository contains all the input and output data (including maps) related to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0278120">Van Dijk et al. (2022), Occupations on the map: Using a super learner algorithm to downscale labor statistics</a>. It does not contain several large (> 4GB) intermediate files, which summarize the results of the large number of machine learning models that were trained and tuned as part of the super learner algorithm. These files can be created by running the scripts in the supplementary GitHub repository: https://github.com/michielvandijk/occupations_on_the_map. All input and output maps produced as part of this study can also be accessed by means of an interactive web application: https://shiny.wur.nl/occupation-map-vnm.</p> <p>In this paper, we demonstrated an approach to create fine-scale gridded occupation maps by means of downscaling district-level labor statistics informed by remote sensing and other spatial information. We applied a super-learner algorithm that combined the results of different machine learning models to predict the shares of six major occupation categories and the labor force participation rate at a resolution of 30 arc seconds (~1x1 km) in Vietnam. The results were subsequently combined with gridded information on the working-age population to produce maps of the number of workers per occupation. The proposed approach can also be applied to produce maps of other (labor) statistics, which are only available at aggregated levels.</p>

<p><strong>American Labor Who's Who dataset, version 2.2.0</strong></p> <p>A dataset derived from the digitized text of Solon de Leon, et al., <em>The American Labor Who's Who</em> (New York: Hanford Press, 1925). This release includes separate files the U.S. and "Other Countries" sections of the directory.</p> <p>The American Labor Who's Who (ALWW), published in 1925, is a directory of activists in the fields of trade unionism, immigrant rights, civil liberties, progressive and radical politics. The directory includes roughly 1,300 entries for U.S. activists and 300 additional non-US activists. Each entry is a telegraphic biography. Some provide only name, professional title and address at the time of publication, but many sketch rich life histories. Nearly all provide details on birth date and place, family background, education, migration, and work histories, as well as key organizations, events publications, home and work addresses.</p> <p>The ALWW dataset is derived from the text hosted on the HathiTrust digital library: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000591300. Faculty, staff, and students at UCLA corrected the plain text from the scanned document and parsed the text into comma-separated fields. This release includes separate files for US entries and "Other Countries" entries. About 30 individuals are listed in the US section with the notation "see other countries," mainly Canadians and Mexicans. Previous studies have quantified humid heat impacts on labor productivity by relying on exposure response functions that are based on uncontrolled experiments under a limited range of heat and humidity. Here we use the latest empirical model, based on a wider range of temperatures and humidity, for studying the impact of humid heat and recent climate change on labor productivity. We show that globally, humid heat may currently be associated with over 650 billion hours of annual lost labor (148 million full time equivalent jobs lost), 400 billion hours more than previous estimates. These differences in labor loss estimates are comparable to losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, annual heat-induced labor productivity losses are estimated at 2.1 trillion in 2017 PPP$, and in several countries are equivalent to more than 10% of gross domestic product. Over the last four decades, global heat-related labor losses increased by at least 9% (>60 billion hours annually using the new empirical model) highlighting that relatively small changes in climate (<0.5 ◦C) can have large impacts on global labor and the economy.'</p>
Behavioral performance and division of labor influence brain mosaicism in the leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes
<p>Brain evolution is hypothesized to be driven by behavioral selection on neuroarchitecture. We developed a novel metric of relative neuroanatomical investments involved in performing tasks varying in sensorimotor and processing demands across polymorphic task-specialized workers of the leafcutter ant <i>Atta cephalotes</i> and quantified brain size and structure to examine their correlation with our computational approximations. Investment in multi-sensory and motor integration for task performance was estimated to be greatest for media workers, whose highly diverse repertoire includes leaf-quality discrimination and leaf-harvesting tasks that likely involve demanding sensory and motor processes. Confocal imaging revealed that absolute brain volume increased with worker size and functionally specialized compartmental scaling differed among workers. The mushroom bodies, centers of sensory integration and learning and memory, and the antennal lobes, olfactory input sites, were larger in medias than in minims (gardeners) and significantly larger than in majors ("soldiers"), both of which had lower scores for involvement of olfactory processing in the performance of their characteristic tasks. Minims had a proportionally larger central complex compared to other workers. These results support the hypothesis that variation in task performance influences selection for mosaic brain structure, the independent evolution of proportions of the brain composed by different neuropils.</p>

Supplementary data for: Transcriptomics of mosaic brain differentiation underlying complex division of labor in a social insect
<p>Concerted developmental programming may constrain changes in component structures of the brain, thus limiting the ability of selection acting on individual brain compartments to form an adaptive mosaic independent of total brain size or body size. Measuring patterns of gene expression underpinning brain scaling in conjunction with anatomical brain atlases can aid in identifying influences of concerted and/or mosaic evolution. Species exhibiting exceptional size and behavioral polyphenisms provide excellent systems to test predictions of brain evolution models by quantifying brain gene expression. We examined patterns of brain gene expression in a remarkably polymorphic and behaviorally complex social insect, the leafcutter ant <em>Atta</em> <em>cephalotes</em>. Approximately ~50% of differential gene expression observed among three morphologically, behaviorally, and neuroanatomically differentiated worker size groups was attributable to body size, but we also found strong evidence of differential brain gene expression unexplained by worker morphological variation. Transcriptomic analysis identified patterns of gene expression not linearly correlated with worker size but rather, in some cases, mirroring neuropil scaling. Additionally, we observed enriched gene ontology terms associated with nucleic acid regulation, metabolism, neurotransmission, and sensory perception, further supporting a relationship between brain gene expression and worker social role. These findings demonstrate that differential brain gene expression among polymorphic workers is linked to behavioral and neuroanatomical differentiation underpinning complex agrarian division of labor in <em>A</em>. <em>cephalotes</em>.</p>
