Reproductive hormones mediate changes in the gut microbiome during pregnancy and lactation in Phayre's leaf monkeys
Studies in multiple host species have shown that gut microbial diversity and composition change during pregnancy and lactation. However, the specific mechanisms underlying these shifts are not well understood. Here, we use longitudinal data from wild Phayre's leaf monkeys to test the hypothesis that fluctuations in reproductive hormone concentrations contribute to gut microbial shifts during pregnancy. We described the microbial taxonomic composition of 91 fecal samples from 15 females (n=16 cycling, n=36 pregnant, n=39 lactating) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and assessed whether the resulting data were better explained by overall reproductive stage or by fecal estrogen (fE) and progesterone (fP) concentrations. Our results indicate that while overall reproductive stage affected gut microbiome composition, the observed patterns were driven by reproductive hormones. Females had lower gut microbial diversity during pregnancy and fP concentration was negatively correlated with diversity. Additionally, fP concentration predicted both unweighted and weighted UniFrac distances, while reproductive state only predicted unweighted UniFrac distances. Seasonality (rainfall and periods of phytoprogestin consumption) additionally influenced gut microbial diversity and composition. Our results indicate that reproductive hormones, specifically progestagens, contribute to the shifts in the gut microbiome during pregnancy and lactation.

<p>The immunological role of lactate in antitumor immunity is not well understood. In this study, we report lactate treatment significantly augments antitumor efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade or T cell vaccine therapy in multiple tumor models. Single cell transcriptomics and flow cytometry analysis revealed an increased subpopulation of stem-like TCF-1-expressing CD8<sup>+</sup> T cells upon lactate treatment.</p>

<p>This dataset was used in the meta-analysis and hierarchical clustering published in "Plasma essential amino acid concentration and profile are associated with performance of lactating dairy cows as revealed through meta-analysis and hierarchical clustering" in the Journal of Dairy Science. We searched Web of Science and Google Scholar databases through March 2020 with the terms “plasma EAA,” “milk urea” or “blood urea,” and “dairy” or lactating dairy”. To be included in our study, the papers must have met the following selection criteria: (1) been published in English in a peer-reviewed journal; (2) reported dietary ingredients on a DM basis and at minimum dietary CP concentration; (3) used treatments based on diet changes (e.g., no infusion trials were included); (4) reported DMI, lactation performance, and milk components yield; (5) reported all individual [EAA]p (excluding Trp); and (6) reported blood urea-N or plasma urea-N. Infusion studies were excluded to avoid possible effects of method of EAA supply (e.g., infusion vs. feeding) and to narrow the scope of application. The final dataset included 22 studies and 96 dietary treatments. For a more complete description of the methods, please refer to the published paper. </p>

The systems have been simulated at 315 K for <em>S. rum </em>and 340 K for <em>T. mar</em>. Final configurations of the proteins after productions are provided for all the systems in GRO Gromos87 format. Trajectories with the positions of the proteins every 100 ps are provided for all the systems in XTC gromacs format.</p>

The biology of prolonged lactation in wild Macaca sinica: Interbirth intervals, maternal depletion, infant mortality
<p>A sample of 442 female toque macaques distributed among 39 independent social groups were briefly captured, sedated, and released (within one day) during 13 different years in the period 1986-2002 at the natural forest site of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, where long-term sociobiological research has been conducted (1968 to 2023). All macaques were individually identified and had known life-histories. Lactation was determined by testing females for the presence of absence of milk by manually massaging the mammary tissue. Female reproduction in this wild population was depicted from different perspectives. Firstly, lactation and weaning were linked to offspring age, as well as to female reproductive status (cycling, gestation, and quiescence). A second data set examines interbirth intervals in relation to lactation duration, diet, and somatic growth or parity. Differences in diet quality were also related to menarche. A third data set examined female body condition (using skinfold thickness as a measure of % body fat) to diet quality and differences in the expenditure of foraging time between lactating and non-lactating females. A fourth data set considered the relation between infant mortality during peak lactation and the depletion of female metabolic energy balance as indexed by early weaning (cessation of lactation) and a shift to female reproductive quiescence. In the publication some of these data were integrated with mother-infant behavioral relationships as cited from an independent study of the same population. A final data set indicates the names of participants who contributed to both the long-term demographic records, milk collections and estimates human effort for different phases of this research.</p>
