Water chemistry and aquatic vegetation data from Les Cheneaux Islands, Northern Lake Huron, Michigan, USA, 2016-2018

Remote sensing approaches that could identify species of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and measure their extent in lake littoral zones would greatly enhance their study and management, especially if they can provide faster or more accurate results than traditional field methods. Remote sensing with multispectral sensors can provide this capability, but SAV identification with this technology must address the challenges of light extinction in aquatic environments where chlorophyll, dissolved organic carbon, and suspended minerals can affect water clarity and the strength of the sensed light signal. Here, we present environmental data collected to support a study using an unmanned aerial system (UAS)-enabled methodology to identify the extent of the invasive SAV species Myriophyllum spicatum (Eurasian watermilfoil, or EWM) in the Les Cheneaux Islands area of northwestern Lake Huron, Michigan, USA. Data collected includes water chemistry (nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, suspended solids, chlorophyll a), light profiles, and submerged aquatic vegetation characteristics including cover, species dominance using aquatic vegetation survey methods (AVAS), and biomass.

Data from: Heterogeneity in habitat and nutrient availability facilitate the co-occurrence of N2 fixation and denitrification across wetland - stream - lake ecotones of Lakes Superior and Huron

Great Lakes coastlines are mosaics of wetland, stream, and lake habitats, characterized by a high degree of spatial heterogeneity that may facilitate the co-occurrence of seemingly incompatible biogeochemical processes due to variation in environmental factors that favor each process. We measured nutrient limitation and rates of N2 fixation and denitrification along transects in 5 wetland - stream - lake ecotones with different nutrient loading in Lakes Superior and Huron and hypothesized that rates of both processes would be related to nutrient limitation status, habitat type, and environmental characteristics including temperature, nutrient concentrations, and organic matter quality. This data package includes information on sampling sites, dates and locations; rates of N fixation and denitrification measured at each site, date and transect location; and biomass information from nutrient diffusing substrates deployed on the study transects.

Hourly time series of Ives Lake (Huron Mountains, Marquette County, MI) Water Temperature-Depth Profiles, 2013-2022 (continuing study)

Long-term measurements of lake temperatures are essential to providing insights into local and regional changes in climate since large, still water bodies effectively act as a high-frequency filter. Ives Lake is a 30.7 m deep water body in northern Marquette County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Beginning in 2013, temperature readings have been collected hourly from a string of twelve sensors located near the deepest point of the lake (approximately 46.84874 N lat, 87.84895 W long; identified by sonar survey in 2010 by first author). Measurements are continuing. The purpose of the project is to collect a data record of sufficient duration to determine if water temperatures are warming, and if the dates of autumn lake turnover are shifting toward later in the year.

Carbon Monitoring System Lake Huron Primary Production Monthly V1 (CMSLakeHuronPPM) at GES DISC

Monthly Average primary production/carbon fixation data for Lake Huron. The primary production data is derived using MODIS imagery with model data. The NASA Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) is designed to make significant contributions in characterizing, quantifying, understanding, and predicting the evolution of global carbon sources and sinks through improved monitoring of carbon stocks and fluxes. The System will use the full range of NASA satellite observations and modeling/analysis capabilities to establish the accuracy, quantitative uncertainties, and utility of products for supporting national and international policy, regulatory, and management activities. CMS will maintain a global emphasis while providing finer scale regional information, utilizing space-based and surface-based data and will rapidly initiate generation and distribution of products both for user evaluation and to inform near-term policy development and planning.
