Social-Ecological Dynamics of Recreational Fishery Landscapes: Recreational angler catch and satisfaction in the Midwest, 2018 to 2024
The goal of this dataset is to understand angler information gathering and sharing, technology use, expectation-setting, site choice, and the factors influencing angler satisfaction in rural and urban environments. These data were collected through on-site creel surveys and instantaneous counts of fishing effort and associated angler vehicles. Traditional creel surveys are completed only at the end of an angler's fishing trip. These dual-intercept creel survey data are novel because anglers were intercepted both before and after their fishing trip. This survey design allowed us to collect unbiased estimates of anglers' expected catch. These data can be used to understand the role of angler expectations in angler satisfaction and behavior. Data collection were conducted in two counties in Wisconsin, USA. Vilas County is a primarily rural, forested, and glaciated region with many relatively small lakes. Dane County has a larger urban center (Madison, WI) that is surrounded by agricultural areas. Most of the Dane County lakes surveyed were part of the Yahara chain of lakes: Lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa. Dane county has fewer, larger lakes with greater connectivity to each other. Vilas County was sampled in the summer of 2018, the summer of 2019, and the summer and winter of 2022. Dane County was sampled in the winter and summer of 2022.
Landscape and Regional Impacts of Hurricanes in New England 1620-1997
This project used a combination of historical research and computer modeling to study the impacts of hurricanes in New England since 1620. For details on methods and results, please see the published paper (Boose, E. R., K. E. Chamberlin and D. R. Foster. 2001. Landscape and regional impacts of hurricanes in New England. Ecological Monographs 71: 27-48). The Abstract from the paper is reproduced below. "Hurricanes are a major factor controlling ecosystem structure, function and dynamics in many coastal forests and yet their ecological role can be understood only by assessing impacts in space and time over a period of centuries. We present a new method for reconstructing hurricane disturbance regimes using a combination of historical research and computer modeling. Historical data on wind damage for each hurricane in the selected region are quantified using the Fujita scale to produce regional maps of actual damage. A simple meteorological model (HURRECON), parameterized and tested for selected recent hurricanes, provides regional estimates of wind speed, direction, and damage for each storm. Individual reconstructions are compiled to analyze spatial and temporal patterns of hurricane impacts. Long-term effects of topography on a landscape scale are then examined with a simple topographic exposure model (EXPOS). "We applied this method to New England, USA, examining hurricanes since European settlement in 1620. "Puerto Rico is subject to frequent and severe impacts from hurricanes, whose long-term ecological role must be assessed on a scale of centuries. In this study we applied a method for reconstructing hurricane disturbance regimes developed in an earlier study of hurricanes in New England. Patterns of actual wind damage from historical records were analyzed for 85 hurricanes since European settlement in 1508. A simple meteorological model (HURRECON) was used to reconstruct the impacts of 43 hurricanes since 1851. Long-term effects of topography on a landscape scale in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) were simulated with a simple topographic exposure model (EXPOS). "Average return intervals across Puerto Rico for F0 damage (loss of leaves and branches) and F1 damage (scattered blowdowns, small gaps) on the Fujita scale were 4 and 6 years, respectively. At higher damage levels a gradient was created by the direction of the storm tracks and the weakening of hurricanes over the interior mountains. Average return intervals for F2 damage (extensive blowdowns) and F3 damage (forests leveled) ranged from 15 to 33 years and 50 to 150 years, respectively, from east to west. This study examined landscape-scale forest dynamics in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (Puerto Rico). The analysis was based on vegetation maps created from aerial photographs taken in 1936 and 1989. For details on methods and results, please see the published paper (Foster, D. R., M. Fluet and E. R. "Increasingly ecologists are recognizing that human disturbance has played an important role in tropical forest history and that many assumptions concerning the relative importance of natural processes warrant re-examination. To assess the historical role of broad-scale human versus natural disturbance on an intensively studied tropical forest we undertook a landscape-level analysis of forest dynamics in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF; 10,871 ha) in eastern Puerto Rico. Using aerial photographs (1936 and 1989), GIS, a model of topographic exposure to hurricane winds, and historical data, we sought to: (1) document historical changes in extent, cover and type of forest vegetation, (2) evaluate the distribution of land-use and hurricane impacts, (3) assess the contributions of these processes in controlling current vegetation patterns, and (4) relate these results to ongoing ecological, conservation and natural resource discussions. "With over 1000 m of relief in the LEF, the broad vegetation zones of Tabonuco (below 600 m a.s.l.), Colorado (600-900 m), Dwarf (above 900 m), and Palm forest are determined by environmental gradients. Landscape Response to Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in Southern New England 1997-2011
The hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand; HWA), a small, aphid-like insect native to Japan, is currently migrating northward through eastern North America and threatens to eliminate eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carriere), one of the most abundant, long-lived shade tolerant species, across its range. In addition, a second invasive pest, the elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa; EHS), often co-occurs with HWA on hemlock with unknown long-term consequences. The major objectives of this study were: (1) To characterize the pre-HWA distribution, composition, and structure of hemlock stands; (2) to characterize the spatial patterns of damage generated by HWA across southern New England since the time of its arrival in 1985; (3) to examine environmental and stand factors that are associated with declines in crown vigor and mortality of hemlock; (4) examine the dynamics of HWA and EHS in hemlock stands over time; and (5) assess whether there is a difference in the response of these insects to abiotic conditions (winter temperature, summer temperature, summer precipitation), and whether the distribution and abundance of each insect species is dependent on biotic interactions with the co-occurring insect species. Connecticut Stands (originally sampled in 1997 and 1998) Aerial photographs, photographic overlays, and extensive field study were used to map and develop GIS overlays of almost 6000 hemlock stands in a 4900 km2 study region extending from Long Island Sound northward to the Massachusetts border and including the Connecticut River Valley in Connecticut, USA. Intensive sampling of a random selection of 114 hemlock stands across the study area was used to document patterns of hemlock infestation, vigor, and mortality in relation to stand and site characteristics. Dynamic landscapes of fear and safety alter prey refuge use in freshwater habitats
The non-consumptive effects of predators on prey behavior have been studied in many different systems. However, predator-prey ecology has placed a bulk of emphasis on how fear alters prey behavior, and new studies have begun to shift focus to the importance that safety in the form of refuges has in structuring prey behavioral responses. This project focuses on changes in the safety landscape as well as changes in the fear landscape and how these changes impact crayfish behavior. Using an established bass-crayfish predator prey system, we altered shelter quality and location in relation to the presence of bass odor signals. We measured shelter use by the crayfish in response to this changing landscape.
Landscape of fear and safety summer 2025 data from University of Michigan Biological Station stream research facilities
Predator prey interactions are often driven by sensory cues and these cues play a role in non-consumptive effects. We are interested in the role that chemical cues (from predators) play in resource use by one of fish common prey, crayfish. We created flow through mesocosms and populated them with crayfish and various configurations of shelters and food. Then we presented to the crayfish predator cues (from large mouth bass) and measured behavioral responses from midnight to 4 am.
Critical slowing down: vegetation height, cover and composition assess resilience of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes following experimental disturbance at twelve sites across the estuarine landscape
We investigated the relative recovery rates of vegetation cover, vegetation height and community composition over a period of >10 years after experimental disturbance in 12 tidal marshes (two oligohaline, three mesohaline and seven polyhaline sites) across the estuarine landscape on the coast of Georgia, USA. Vegetation was removed from three by three meter plots (four per site) with herbicide in 2006 followed by repeated clipping through 2009. Vegetation height, cover and composition was assessed in experimental and control plots (4 of each per site) from 2010 to 2020. The goal of the study was to assess how quickly the sites recovered from disturbance, how this varied in different types of marshes, and how results varied depending on whether recovery was assessed by vegetation height, cover or composition.
Landscape Phenology from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Photography at Harvard Forest 2013
This data set contains orthophotos in the vicinity of the EMS tower at Harvard Forest, as well as the flight logs from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used to obtain the digital images used in orthophoto creation. Orthophotos were created by mosaicking approximately 200 JPEG images from each date of observation. The orthophotos cover the spatial extent of the 250 meter resolution MODIS pixel that contains the EMS tower. Land cover types in the area of photography include deciduous and evergreen forest, and wetlands. The research goal of data collection for this data set was to observe spatial variance in plant phenology. Therefore, photos were taken from before leaf out until after leaf drop. Orthophotos were collected approximately every 5 days during spring and weekly during fall; see filenames for specific dates. The nominal spatial resolution of the orthophotos is 6 cm, however due to various factors including inaccuracy of the onboard GPS, wind-blown motion of trees, the automated orthophoto mosaicking process, and user error in final georeferencing, image analysis has been conducted at 10 m resolution. The orthophotos are available as GeoTIFF files.

This data supports the following publication: Rose, K.C., S.R. Greb, M. Diebel, and M.G. Turner. Annual precipitation as a regulator of spatial and temporal drivers of lake water clarity. Ecological Applications. The data uses satellite remotely sensed estimates of Secchi disk depth (Landsat imagery), landscape features, and lake characteristics to understand how and why lakes vary and respond to different drivers through time and space. The data were produced by the authors and their collaborators, as acknowledged in the manuscript. The Secchi disk depth data span the time period 1991-2012.
Presence observations for six tree species prioritized for forest landscape restoration in Ethiopia
<p><strong>Description:</strong></p><p>Geolocations of presence occurrences for a selection of six species (<i>Cordia africana</i>, <i>Croton macrostachyus</i>, <i>Eucalyptus globulus</i>, <i>Faidherbia albida</i>, <i>Grevillea robusta</i>, <i>Juniperus procera</i>) sourced from databases (GBIF, RAINBIO) and from the scientific literature.</p><p>Each record is associated with a DOI, link, or citation to the original source of the data. Observations were filtered using the R package <i>CoordinatesCleaner</i> (Zizka <i>et al</i>. 2019) with the <i>clean_coordinates </i>function to filter for errors that are common to biological collections.</p><p>The breakdown of the number of observations by species is: <i>Cordia africana</i> (84); <i>Croton macrostachyus</i> (129); <i>Eucalyptus globulus (</i>20); <i>Faidherbia albida </i>(31); <i>Grevillea robusta </i>(350); <i>Juniperus procera </i>(115).</p>

Landscape Ecosystem Classification Soils and Vegetation Plots Data at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, Michigan from 1987 to 2015 remeasurements
Landscape ecosystems are a means of understanding the spatial patterns of and the functional interrelationships in forest ecosystems. Landscape ecosystem research is a multifactor, holistic approach to identifying, classifying, describing, and mapping terrain ecosystems. Abiotic and biotic factors are integrated in the field to distinguish repeating units similar in ecological structure and function. Landscape ecosystems are identified by simultaneous integration of physiographic, soil, and vegetation information. The more stable components--physiography and soil--largely determine local climate, and water and nutrient relations, and thus the interrelationships of physiography and soil form the foundation of a landscape ecosystem classification. Vegetation is seen as a phytometer that integrates the many abiotic factors and their interactions, and therefore reflects differences in ecosystem structure and function. When the three main ecosystem factors are analyzed simultaneously, one can perceive interrelationships that result in ecologically meaningful differences among segments of the ecosphere. Landscape ecosystems are spatial; they are volumetric, multi-dimensional segments of earth, whose components include soil, water, atmosphere, solar radiation, and biota. These segments can be identified, classified, described, and mapped at various scales. From the years of 1988 to 2001, various graduate students of Burton V. Barnes completed their masters thesis and dissertations in this pursuit. The attached data set is a culmination of these individual work. Each plot has measurements at various scales within the 10 by 30 meet plot. A stratified random design was used to locate plot locations. The random design was stratified by major and minor landforms in the region. All trees within the plot where identified and dbh was measured. Landscape Position Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Fish 1998 - 1999
As part of the Landscape Position Project, we conducted fish sampling on each of 26 lakes using a variety of gear types. Sampling was conducted beginning in the 3rd week in June and running through the endof July in 1998. In 1999, sampling was conducted from early July through August. We used vertical gillnets of various mesh sizes (19, 32, 51, 64, 89-mm stretch mesh) to sample pelagic fishes. The nets were fished in the deep basin of each lake for one diel cycle. We used fyke nets to sample fishes in the shallow near shore areas. Three nets were set, one each at differing locations defined by substrate type (muck, sand and cobble) for one diel cycle. Three crayfish traps were set along side each of the fyke nets. We performed electrofishing over two, 30 minute transects along the near shore area between 0.3 and 1.5-m in depth. North Temperate Lakes LTER: Patterns of Soil Phosphorus Across an Urbanizing Agricultural Landscape 2000 - 2001
Understanding the magnitude and location of soil phosphorus (P) accumulation in watersheds is a critical step toward managing runoff of this pollutant to aquatic ecosystems. Here, we examined the usefulness of urban-rural gradients (URGs), an emerging paradigm in urban ecology, for predicting soil P concentrations across a rapidly urbanizing agricultural watershed in southern Wisconsin. We compared several measures of an urban-rural gradient to predictors of soil P such as soil type, slope, topography, land use, land cover, and fertilizer and manure use. Most of the factors that were expected to drive differences in soil P concentrations were not found to be good predictors of soil P; while there were several significant relationships, most explained only a small proportion of the variation. There was a significant relationship between soil P concentration and each of the urban-rural gradients, but these relationships explained only a small amount of the variation in soil P concentrations. Soil P concentration, unlike some other ecosystem properties, is not well predicted by urban-rural gradients Additional Chemical Analyses: These additional analyses were done to provide comparisons to Bray-1 P. Specifically, we wanted to know whether, in Dane County, there was a consistent relationship between total P and Bray-1 P. Landscape Position Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Aquatic Macrophytesn 1998 - 1999
Submersed and floating macrophytes were surveyed along transects running perpendicular to shore at two sites representative of muck (organic) and sand substrate macrophyte communities. Data were collected by Karen A. Wilson as part of her PhD work in Northern Wisconsin, (Vilas and Onieda Counties) during July and August of 1998 and 1999. Parameters characterizing the chemical limnology and spatial attributes of 51 lakes were surveyed as part of the Landscape Position Project. Parameters are measured at or close to the deepest part of the lake. The following parameters are measured one meter from the surface and two meters from the bottom of the lake: pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, total silica. The following parameters are measured one meter from the surface: dissolved organic carbon, total organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon, total inorganic carbon, spectrophotometric absorbance (color scan), major anions and cations, alkalinity.
