Engineering the Compositional Architecture of Core-Shell Upconverting Lanthanide-Doped Nanoparticles for Optimal Luminescent Donor in Resonance Energy Transfer: The Effects of Energy Migration and Storage

<p>F&ouml;rster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between single molecule donor (D) and acceptor (A) is well understood from fundamental perspective and is widely applied in biology, biotechnology, medical diagnostics and bio-imaging. However, the reliability of molecular FRET measurements can be affected by numerous artefacts which eventually hamper quantitative and reliable analysis, mostly due to issues with the donor and acceptor molecules. Lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have demonstrated their suitability as alternative donor species. Nevertheless, while they solved most disadvantageous features of organic donor molecules, such as photo-bleaching, spectral cross-excitation and emission bleed-through, the fundamental understanding and practical realizations of bio-assays with UCNP donors remain challenging. Among others, the actual donor ions in individual donor UCNPs are the numerous activator ions randomly distributed in the nanoparticle at various distances to acceptors anchored on the nanoparticle surface. Further, the power dependent, complex energy transfer upconversion and energy migration between sensitizing and activating lanthanide ions within UCNPs complicate the decay based analysis of <strong><em>D</em></strong>-<strong><em>A</em></strong> interaction. In this work, the assessment of designed virtual core-shell nanoparticle (VNP) models led us to the new designs of UCNPs, such as &hellip;@Er, Yb@Er, Yb@YbEr, which were experimentally evaluated as donor nanoparticles and compared to the simulations. Moreover, the specific properties of lanthanide-based upconversion motivated us to analyze not only steady-state luminescence and luminescence decay responses of both the UNCP donor and the sensitized acceptor, but also the effects of their luminescence rise kinetics upon RET was discussed in newly proposed disparity measurements. The presented studies help to understand the role of energy-transfer and energy migration between lanthanide ion dopants (due to their concentration and spatial distribution) and how the architecture of core-shell UCNPs affects their performance as FRET donors to organic acceptor dyes.</p>

Noncentrosymmetric Lanthanide-Based MOF Materials Exhibiting Strong SHG Activity and NIR Luminescence of Er3+: Application in Nonlinear Optical Thermometry

<p>Optically active luminescent materials based on lanthanide ions attract significant attention due to their unique spectroscopic properties, nonlinear optical activity, and the possibility of application as contactless sensors. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) that exhibit strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and are optically active in the NIR region are unexpectedly underrepresented. Moreover, such Ln-MOFs require ligands that are chiral and/or need multistep synthetic procedures. Here, we show that the NIR pulsed laser irradiation of the noncentrosymmetric, isostructural Ln-MOF materials (MOF-Er3+ (1) and codoped MOF-Yb3+/Er3+ (2)) that are constructed from simple, achiral organic substrates in a one-step procedure results in strong and tunable SHG activity. The SHG signals could be easily collected, exciting the materials in a broad NIR spectral range, from &asymp;800 to 1500 nm, resulting in the intense color of emission, observed in the entire visible spectral region. Moreover, upon excitation in the range of &asymp;900 to 1025 nm, the materials also exhibit the NIR luminescence of Er3+ ions, centered at &asymp;1550 nm. The use of a 975 nm pulse excitation allows simultaneous observations of the conventional NIR emission of Er3+ and the SHG signal, altogether tuned by the composition of the Ln-MOF materials. Taking the benefits of different thermal responses of the mentioned effects, we have developed a nonlinear optical thermometer based on lanthanide-MOF materials. In this system, the SHG signal decreases with temperature, whereas the NIR emission band of Er3+ slightly broadens, allowing ratiometric (Er3+ NIR 1550 nm/SHG 488 nm) temperature monitoring. Our study provides a groundwork for the rational design of readily available and self-monitoring NLO-active Ln-MOFs with the desired optical and electronic properties.</p>

Lanthanides in Sicilian Soils

<p>The whole soil dataset for Sicily comprises 2932 soil profiles, including 1773 soil augers and 907 mini-pits. Among these, here are extracted 117 soil profiles serve as benchmarks for Sicilian soil typological units (a total of 199 soil samples extracted and analyzed). The analyses involved drying, sieving, digestion with acids, and measurement of trace elements using ICP-MS, with validation against certified reference materials confirming accuracy and precision. Here are shown&nbsp;rare earth elements (REEs), i.e. lanthanides, yttrium, and scandium according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and are sometimes referred to, without Sc, as REY (lanthanides plus yttrium). REYs can be classified into two groups: light rare earth elements (LREYs) from 57La to 64Gd, and heavy rare earth elements (HREYs) from 65Tb to 71Lu, including yttrium (39Y).</p>

Interplay between a heptamethine cyanine dye sensitizer (IR806) and lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles

This motivates using strongly absorbing dye molecules as antennas and sensitizers. However, despite much effort, understanding of this dye-UCNP interplay is still limited. Major sensitization mechanisms are still under discussion, largely because there is a lack of effective means to observe key factors such as dark state transitions within the dyes. Here, we established a combined spectroscopic procedure to systematically investigate the photophysics behind the dye-UCNP interaction, embracing fluorescence-based transient-state excitation-modulation, lifetime and correlation spectroscopy, and spectrofluorometry/spectrophotometry. With this procedure we studied the heptamethine cyanine dye IR806, a typical UCNP sensitizer, established its photophysical model, deciphered its photophysics in UCL-sensitization-related environments and could identify energy transfer from the IR806 singlet excited state to Yb3+ (UCNP sensitizer ion) as the dominant sensitization mechanism. Our studies suggest that IR806 can form non-emissive H-aggregates at the nanoparticle surfaces, which can be dissociated after certain light excitation duration (typically&gt;100&micro;s). Moreover, buildup of a non-fluorescent, photo-redox state of IR806 after longer irradiation times (10&ndash;100ms) can deleteriously affect its UCL sensitization, inferring an optimal excitation duration for dye-sensitized UCNPs, relevant for e.g. optical imaging applications.</span></p>
