A laser-plasma platform for photon-photon physics: the two photon Breit-Wheeler process, and Bounding elastic photon-photon scattering at $\sqrt s \approx 1$\,MeV using a laser-plasma platform

The data contained in this repository was used in the production of the publication "A laser-plasma platform for photon-photon physics: the two photon Breit-Wheeler process" (https://doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/ac3048) and "Bounding elastic photon-photon scattering at $\sqrt s \approx 1$\,MeV using a laser-plasma platform" (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physletb.2025.139247).

Optical profilometry of the surface of debris catchers used in laser-plasma experiments at ELI-NP

3D area scans were performed using the 3D Optical Profilometer Bruker ContourX-100.

Method: The setup consisted of 5x Objective, .55x field of view, 100um back scan and forward scan, and a threshold value of 2% (this threshold means that any height variation that is more than 2% of the standard deviation away from the average will be considered significant). This is considered a lenient threshold that would include a lot of noise, but given the sharpness of the features in the sample and the steep wall angles, a higher threshold value excluded too much of the features. Stitching areas were approx. 15mm x 12mm in size consisting of 20+ individual measurements, with a 20% overlap between scans. The area was chosen to include all areas of ablation visible. Data fill was used to approximate missing data in areas of high damage using the software provided data fill algorithm on Vision64 Software.

Results: Data fill was considerable and introduces a lot of uncertainty. The samples are inherently rough and difficult to measure with optical techniques, so no filtering was applied. The depth of ablation areas had poor data acquisition, consequently the step profilometer was considered for more accurate measurements.

Note: The files can be opened with free tools such as https://www.profilmonline.com/ .

Surface profile was performed with Dektak Pro Stylus Profilometer

Method: The setup consisted of Stylus 2um diameter, 10mm length, Stylus force 10mg, resolution longitudinal 0.555um/pt, resolution quoted as sub 100nm in height. Data was averaged over 5 scans.

Results: Stylus radius of 2um may smooth out the sharpest features. Debris and ablation seem to be immovable and adhered to the substrate such that the probe would not change the substrate during measurement. Multiple measurements were taken and an average of ablation depth was estimated at 10um.

Reference dataset of multi-objective and multi-fidelity optimization in laser-plasma acceleration

This repository contains a dataset used for the article "Multi-objective and multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization of laser-plasma acceleration" (arXiv:2210.03484). The dataset consists of 2443 FBPIC particle-in-cell simulations of a laser wakefield accelerator that were selected using a Bayesian optimizer. The goal of the optimization was to perform multi-objective multi-fidelity optimization of electron beam parameters. The dataset contains simulations of different resolutions, accordingly with differing fidelities. The typical runtime at lowest (highest) resolution is approximately 1 (90) minutes.

In the dataset we have train_x and train_obj numpy arrays with dimensions (n,5) and (n,3), respectively. Here n is the number of FBPIC simulations. The five columns in train_x are [plasma density, upramp length, laser focus, downramp length, fidelity]. The fidelity parameter controls the resolution and hence the runtime of the simulation. The three columns in the train_obj are the [total charge, distance of median to target energy, bandwidth of electron beams]. For the distance, the target energy is fixed to 300 MeV and for the bandwidth is defined by the median absolute deviation around the median. The two columns have negative values since the optimizer assumes a maximization of all objectives while the distance and bandwidth in this study were being minimized.

The different folders contain data of different kind of single and multi-objectives that were used to produce figures 2, 3, 5 in the associated paper. For more details please see the referred article. The folder "combined" contains the data of all simulations together and is most suitable for (5D x 3D) surrogate model generation.
