CoHERE Work Package 5 Survey of free time activities amongst Latvian schoolchildren
<p>The quantitative survey «Youth and leisure time activities, informal education and cultural heritage» was carried out as part of Work Package 5 (Education, heritage and identities) of 'Critical Heritages: Performing and presenting identities in Europe' (https://research.ncl.ac.uk/cohere/researchstrands/). This Work Package develops best practices in the production and transmission of European heritages and identities within two sectors that face challenges in an age of immigration and globalization, namely education and cultural heritage production. It explores how European identity is shaped through formal and informal learning situations both in and outside the classroom with the purpose of enhancing school curricula and informal learning at heritage sites by integrating innovative technologies and including multicultural perspectives.</p> <p>The target group: youth (age 16 to 19) from secondary schools and professional education schools in Latvia </p> <p>Sample size: 1047. Time period: December 2017 – March 2018.</p> <p>Method: a self-administered questionnaire.</p> <p>The aim of the survey is to examine how cultural heritage shape different identities in Europe, representing ideas of place, history, traditions and sense of belonging.</p> <p>Tasks of the survey:<br> 1) to get information about leisure time activities of the youth and their participation in different informal education activities;<br> 2) to examine youth opinion about the role of cultural heritage and their involvement in safeguarding cultural heritage;<br> 3) to analyse the role of cultural heritage in formation of local, national and European identities of the young people.</p>
Toward a Comparable Corpus of Latvian, Russian and English Tweets
<p>Twitter has become a rich source for linguistic data. Here, a possibility of building a trilingual Latvian-Russian-English corpus of tweets from Riga, Latvia is investigated. Such a corpus, once constructed, might be of great use for multiple purposes such as training machine translation models, examining cross-lingual phenomena and studying the population of Riga. This pilot study shows that it is feasible to build such a resource by building and analysing a pilot corpus, which is made publicly available and can be used to construct a large comparable corpus.</p>

Tad arī tajā virzienā sāku veikt kaut kādus sākumdarbus. Laiku pa laikam pie šī temata atgriežos un turpinu. Pagaidām par šo tematu esmu publicējis vienu akadēmisku rakstu (“Music samizdat as zines? The Case of ‘Ot Vinta’ from Soviet Latvia”, 2020) un vairākus ‘pelēkos’ un bloga ierakstus. Then I started doing some initial work in that direction as well. I return to this topic from time to time and continue. So far, I have published one academic article (“Music samizdat as zines? The Case of 'Ot Vinta' from Soviet Latvia”, 2020) and several working/ grey papers on this topic. See bibliography below.</p> <p>On Zenodo.org (10.5281/zenodo.7643620), I published the ‘Latvian music samizdat / fanzine database’ as it looks at the moment. A Grammatically Annotated Corpus of the Old Latvian Postil of Georg Mancelius
<p>This grammatically annoted corpus aims at facilitating linguistic research on Old Latvian based on the Postil of Georg Mancelius from the year 1654. The corpus is divided into two subcorpora, "pericopes" and "homilies" to make register related research easier.</p> <p>The pericopes were annotated using SIL Toolbox and converted to be used in the search-tool ANNIS using the conversion tool PEPPER.</p> <p>Three formats are provided in this release: 1. the Toolbox files, 2. the transitional Excel files and 3. a zipped folder to be imported into ANNIS.</p> <p>Created in the project B02, <em>Emergence and change of registers: The case of Lithuanian and Latvian</em> of the CRC 1412 "Register" (funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft: DFG, German Research Foundation: 416591334).</p>
Latvian results from the monitoring of pesticide residues in food
<p>This dataset contains the analytical results of pesticide residues measured in the food products analysed by the national competent authorities. Pesticide residues resulting from the use of plant protection products on crops that are used for food or feed production may pose a risk factor for public health. For this reason, a comprehensive legislative framework has been established in the European Union (EU), which defines rules for the approval of active substances used in plant protection products, the use of plant protection products and for pesticide residues in food. In order to ensure a high level of consumer protection, legal limits, so called “maximum residue levels” or briefly “MRLs”, are established in Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. EU-harmonised MRLs are set for all pesticides covering all types of food products. A default MRL of 0.01 mg/kg is applicable for pesticides not explicitly mentioned in the MRL legislation. Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 imposes on Member States the obligation to carry out controls to ensure that food placed on the market is compliant with the legal limits.</p> <p>A sample is considered <strong>free of quantifiable residues</strong> if the analytes were not present in concentrations at or above the limit of quantification (LOQ). The LOQ is the smallest concentration of an analyte that can be quantified with the analytical method used to analyse the sample. It is commonly defined as the minimum concentration of the analyte in the test sample that can be determined with acceptable precision and accuracy.</p> <p>If a sample <strong>contains quantifiable residues</strong> but within the legally permitted limit (maximum residue level, MRL), it is described as a sample with quantified residue levels within the legal limits (below or at the MRL)</p> <p>A sample is considered <strong>non-compliant</strong> with the legal limit (MRL), if the measured residue concentrations clearly exceed the legal limits, taking into account the measurement uncertainty.
