Lecanora markjohnstonii rDNA tree
<p>This is a phylogenetic tree comprising 75 rDNA contigs of lichen mycobionts. The tree was used to infer placement of the new species Lecanora markjohnstonii from a broad sampling of lichenized fungi.</p>
Data from: Lecanora caperatica (Lecanoraceae, lichenized ascomycetes) a new sorediate species widespread in eastern North America
Lecanora caperatica is described based on collections from throughout temperate eastern North America. It is a crustose sorediate species in the L. subfusca group which has pulcaris-type apothecia, and produces atranorin and caperatic acid often with accessory roccellic/angardianic acid. The species is chemically similar to the European L. mugosphagneti which differs in ecology, thallus morphology and in having albella-type apothecia. The generic placement of L. caperatica, and its affinity to the L. subfusca group, are confirmed by molecular phylogenetic analysis.
mtSSU alignment Lecanora markjohnstonii
<p>In order to place the new species <em>Lecanora markjohnstonii </em>within the Lecanoraceae, the <em>mtSSU</em> region was retrieved from our assembled mitogenome and manually added to a six-locus alignment published by Zhao et al. (2015) to infer the phylogeny of Lecanoraceae. The closely-related lichen <em>Lecanora orientoafricana </em>was also added as a possible sister taxon. Only the mtSSU alignment is included in this submission, refer to Zhao et al. (2015) for complete six-locus dataset.</p>
rDNA contig alignment Lecanora markjohnstonii
<p>This rDNA dataset was aligned using MUSCLE-3.7 with default parameters (Edgar 2004) via the CIPRES Science Gateway (Miller, Pfeiffer & Schwartz 2010). This alignment was then manually curated using Mesquite-3.04 (Maddison & Maddison 2015), with ambiguously aligned regions excluded from the alignment. The alignment was made in order to infer a phylogenetic tree of the position of <em>Lecanora markjohnstonii</em>, a new species of lichenized fungus.</p>

<p>This is a phylogenetic tree inferred from a six-gene dataset from Zhao et al. (2015) to which mtSSU sequences from the new species <em>Lecanora markjohnstonii </em>and a closely-related species <em>Lecanora orientoafricana </em>were added. The tree was reconstructed in order to infer placement of <em>L. markjohnstonii </em>within <em>Lecanora.</em></p>
