Dataset of "Preparation of novel lithiated high-entropy spinel type oxyhalides and their electrochemical performance in Li-ion batteries "

<p>Electrochemical measurements carried out using the 2032-coin cells with the Li-metal anode have shown voltammetric charge capacities of 450, 694, and 593 mAh g-1 for HEOFe, LiHEOFeCl, and LiHEOFeF, respectively.<br>Galvanostatic chronopotentiometry at 1 C rate confirmed high initial charge capacities for all the samples but galvanostatic curves exhibited a capacity decay over 100 charging/discharging cycles. Raman spectroelectrochemistry measured on the LiHEOFeF sample proved the reversibility of the electrochemical process for initial charging/discharging cycles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed the lowest initial charge transfer resistance for LiHEOFeCl and its gradual decrease both for LiHEOFeCl and LiHEOFeF during galvanostatic cycling, whereas the charge transfer resistance of HEOFe slightly increases over 100 galvanostatic cycles due to different mechanism of the electrochemical reduction.&nbsp;</p>

Dataset of "Characterization of Silicon-based Fibers Prepared by Electrospinning for Potential Li-ion Battery Anodes"

<p>The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) is driven by advances in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), particularly in anode materials. Graphite electrodes, widely used for their high porosity, conductivity, low weight, and cost-effectiveness, face competition from monocrystalline silicon. Silicon anodes offer higher capacity and energy density, and they are safer because of their nonflammable nature. However, silicon's tendency to expand and contract during cycling presents challenges. This study explores the use of silicon nano- and microfibers to enhance battery stability, addressing these issues effectively.<br>Monocrystalline silicon particles, obtained through milling and sieving, were used as the active component in the nanofibers. These particles, combined with organic precursors (PVP and TEOS), were processed using electrospinning to form fibers. The fibers were then annealed at 650 &deg;C to remove the polymeric PVP component.&nbsp;<br>The results provide valuable insights into the properties and interactions of the silicon nanofibers, highlighting their potential in advanced energy storage devices. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

Dataset for "Study of Rapid Capacity Fade in Prismatic Li-ion Cells with Flexible Packaging"

<p>Prismatic lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered promising electric energy sources in electromobility applications due to their cell to pack density. However, their sensitivity to external and internal influences, and reduced durability lead to inflation risk and potential explosions throughout their lifecycle. These critical processes are strongly influenced by the inner construction of the cell, especially concerning the coating and mechanical fixation. This study subjects a commercially available prismatic LIB cell to comprehensive, correlative analysis employing various imaging techniques. The inner structure of the entire cell is visualized non-destructively by X-ray computed tomography (CT), enabling the identification of critical design flaws prior to electrochemical cycling. Electrochemical cycling simulates the battery lifecycle, and the cell is subsequently disassembled in the fully charged state. The usage of the inert-gas transfer system allowed the preparation of Broad Ion Beam (BIB) electrodes cross-sections in a fully native state and for the first time to observe the tearing of graphite particles due to over-lithiation. Established region labeling system allowed to use CT and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) correlatively to identify critical regions. After 100 cycles, a 40% capacity loss was observed and event diagram describing deagradation mechanisms, related both to the cell design and to the processes occurring at high load, was created.</p>

Apples to Apples: Shift from Mass Ratio to Additive Molecules per Electrode Area to Optimize Li-Ion Batteries

<p>Electrolyte additives in liquid electrolyte batteries can trigger the formation of a protective interphase (SEI) atthe electrodes that aims to suppress side reactions at the electrodes. Studies of varying amounts of additives have been done over the last years, providing a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the electrolyte formulation on the lifetime of the cells. However, these studies mostly focus on the variation of the mass fraction of additive in the electrolyte while disregarding the ratio (radd) of the additive's amount of substance (nadd) to the electrode area (Aelectrode). Herein we utilize our extremely accurate automatic battery assembly system (AUTOBASS) to vary electrode area and amount of substance of the additive. The data provides strong evidence that reporting the mass ratios of electrolyte components is insufficient and the mol of additive relative to the electrodes' area should be reported. Herein, the two most utilized additives, namely fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) were studied. Each additive was varied from 0.1 wt.-% - 3.0 wt.-% for VC, and 5 wt.-% - 15 wt.-% for FEC for two mass loadings of 1 mAh/cm2 and 3 mAh/cm2. To engage the community to find better descriptors, such as the proposed radd, we publish the dataset alongside this manuscript.</p> <p>Codes and mechanical parts of the project:</p> <p>AutoBASS 2.0: <a href="https://github.com/Helge-Stein-Group/AutoBASS/tree/AutoBASS_2.0">GitHub - Helge-Stein-Group/AutoBASS at AutoBASS_2.0</a></p>

Supporting data for "Electrochemical Removal of HF from Carbonate-based LiPF6-containing Li-ion Battery Electrolytes"

<p>This is the dataset of electrochemical experiments and BET analysis for our publication "Electrochemical Removal of HF from Carbonate-based LiPF6-containing Li-ion Battery Electrolytes" (DOI: <span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1149/1945-7111/ad30d3"><span>https://doi.org/10.1149/1945-7111/ad30d3</span></a></span>). This archive contains the raw data and Python Jupyter Notebook computer code to process, analyze, and generate the plots in this manuscript and its Supporting Information.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span>Abstract for the manuscript:</span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span>Due to the hydrolytic instability of LiPF6 in carbonate-based solvents, HF is a typical impurity in Li-ion battery electrolytes. HF significantly influences the performance of Li-ion batteries, for example by impacting the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase at the anode and by affecting transition metal dissolution at the cathode. Additionally, HF complicates studying fundamental interfacial electrochemistry of Li-ion battery electrolytes, such as direct anion reduction, because it is electrocatalytically relatively unstable, resulting in a LiF passivation layer. Methods to selectively remove ppm levels of HF from LiPF6-containing carbonate-based electrolytes are limited. We introduce and benchmark a simple yet efficient electrochemical method to selectively remove ppm amounts of HF from LiPF6-containing carbonate-based electrolytes. The basic idea is the application of a suitable potential to a high surface-area metallic electrode upon which only HF reacts (electrocatalytically) while all other electrolyte components are unaffected under the respective conditions.</span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Germanium tin alloy nanowires as anode materials for high performance Li-ion batteries

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br> The combination of two active Li-ion materials (Ge and Sn) can result in improved conduction paths and higher capacity retention. Here we report for the first time, the implementation of Ge1&ndash;xSnx alloy nanowires as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. Ge1&minus;xSnx alloy nanowires have been successfully grown via vapor&ndash;liquid&ndash;solid technique directly on stainless steel current collectors. Ge1&minus;xSnx (x = 0.048) nanowires were predominantly seeded from the Au0.80Ag0.20 catalysts with negligible amount of growth was also directly catalyzed from stainless steel substrate. The electrochemical performance of the the Ge1&minus;xSnx nanowires as an anode material for Li-ion batteries was investigated via galvanostatic cycling and detailed analysis of differential capacity plots (DCPs). The nanowire electrodes demonstrated an exceptional capacity retention of 93.4% from the 2nd to the 100th charge at a C/5 rate, while maintaining a specific capacity value of &sim;921 mAh g&minus;1 after 100 cycles. Voltage profiles and DCPs revealed that the Ge1&minus;xSnx nanowires behave as an alloying mode anode material, as reduction/oxidation peaks for both Ge and Sn were observed, however it is clear that the reversible lithiation of Ge is responsible for the majority of the charge stored.</p>

Is lithium from geothermal brines the sustainable solution for Li-ion batteries?

<p>The rising demand for Li, paramount for energy storage, necessitates expanded supply. As the supply is concentrated in a few countries, this poses supply chain risks for Li-ion battery makers. To diversify suppliers, alternative Li&nbsp;<a title="Learn more about ore deposits from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/ore-deposit">ore deposits</a>&nbsp;such as geothermal brines are being explored. However, Li extraction from geothermal brines is challenging due to the unique chemistry and elevated temperatures. Since Li-extraction from geothermal brines is in its infancy, data availability and quality are still poor, hampering&nbsp;<a title="Learn more about life cycle assessments from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/life-cycle-assessment">life cycle assessments</a>. Hence, this study provides a parametrized life cycle inventory model of Li carbonate production from geothermal brines. The model accounts for site-specific environmental conditions and technological features. Life cycle impacts at the Salton Sea in the US (1686 cases) and the Upper Rhine Graben in Germany (1982 cases) are quantified. The high case numbers are chosen to mitigate the high uncertainties in input parameters. Specifically, the brine chemistry, adsorption yield, drilling required and energy inputs are varied.&nbsp;<a title="Learn more about Climate change impacts from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/climate-change-impact">Climate change impacts</a>&nbsp;of selected cases vary within 18&ndash;59 kg CO2eq/kg Li carbonate at the Salton Sea and within 5.3&ndash;46 kg CO2eq/kg Li carbonate at the Upper Rhine Graben, compared to 2.1&ndash;11 kg CO2eq/kg Li carbonate in existing ecoinvent data sets. The wide range of potential impacts underscore the necessity of early-stage assessments of the technologies. In case of high drilling demand and use of&nbsp;<a title="Learn more about fossil from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/fossil">fossil</a> energy, climate change impacts of Li-ion batteries using Li carbonate from geothermal brines can increase by 30&ndash;41 % compared to literature values.</p>
