Science 2015 Farley et al Otx-a Library

<p>This dataset represents SEL-seq data generated by first constructing a dictionary of unique barcode tag-enhancer pairs by allowing 2 bp mismatches in the ~69 bp enhancers to buffer the sequencing mistakes. If more than one barcode tag was associated with a single enhancer the maximum reads between these tags were used. Barcoded tags that were attached to multiple enhancers were removed. The resulting dictionary contains 2,534,802 enhancers that are uniquely mapped to one or more barcode tags. 2 biological replicates were used in this experiment and the reads per million total reads (RPM) was used for each tag. In total 163,708 enhancers were detected by RNA-seq and 21,799 of them were defined as active enhancers by RPM &ge; 4 in either of the 2 replicates.</p> <p>Citation:&nbsp;Farley EK, Olson KM, Zhang W, Brandt AJ, Rokhsar DS, Levine MS. 2015. Interviews with editors of library science journals on transitioning to open access

<p>These three files are related to qualitative, semi-structured interviews conducted in Fall 2023 with editors of Library and Information Science (LIS) journals on transitioning to open access. One subgroup consisted of participants who were editors at the time of an LIS journal when it transitioned (or flipped) to an open access model that does not charge a fee to either readers or authors (which this study refers to as equitable open access), and the other subgroup consisted of current editors (at the time) of LIS journals that have not yet transitioned (or unflipped) to an equitable open access model. Two of the files are the interview protocols for each group of flipped and unflipped editors, and the third file is the codebook the researchers used to analyze the interview transcripts. Interview transcripts are not being publicly shared to ensure confidentiality for interview participants.</p> <p>The interview protocols were created based on the findings of a prior research study:</p> <p>Borchardt, R., Dawson, D., &amp; Schultz, T. Information literacy in the area of Library and Information Science. A bibliometric analysis in Latin America, from the Lens database (2001-2020).

<p>The results of scientific production on ALFIN (2001-2020) in the areas of Library and Information Science are shown. All BIC journals were identified from Latindex. Then it was verified whether these journals were contained in the following databases: Web of Science (Core Collection and Scielo Citation Index), Scopus, Lens and Dimensions. The Lens database was chosen for retrieving records on ALFIN and performing the bibliometric analysis, as it has the highest coverage of BIC journals in Latindex. The trend and growth of scientific production were evaluated according to authors and year of publication; the productivity of authors was analyzed using Lotka&#39;s Law and the dispersion of the literature according to Bradford&#39;s Law. The degree, index and coefficient of collaboration were determined and collaboration networks were identified according to authors. The results show that scientific production on ALFIN in Latin America, reached a peak between 2017 and 2018, presenting a decrease from 2019 onwards. It was also observed that the production, collaboration between authors and the number of journals is predominantly Brazilian.</p>

Citizen science at public libraries: Data on librarians and users perceptions of participating in a citizen science project in Catalunya, Spain

<p>As libraries struggle to keep pace with the changing societal landscape, emerging practices such as citizen science (CS) initiatives are being incorporated to reinforce the idea of public libraries as gathering, meeting, and collaboration spaces within the context of shared community and shared learning resources. However, there is little empirical evidence of whether the most open and participatory ways that CS puts forward can converge with and be nurtured by the essence of public libraries. Also, the roles of librarians and users in the &lsquo;next generation public library&rsquo; have been under-developed. As the number of CS initiatives at public libraries grows, so does the need to collect evidence on the impact and the capacity of assimilation of CS practices. The data describes librarians and users&#39; perceptions of participating in a citizen science project. Two hands-on activities for librarians of the Barcelona Network of Public Libraries were implemented. One was a training course for 30 librarians from 24 libraries which allowed them to envisage citizen science implementation in each library. The second activity consisted in the co-creation of a citizen social science project. 40 library users, 7 librarians from 3 different cities, and professional scientists, were involved. The data on librarians and users&#39; perception was collected through participant observation, surveys, and a focus group to identify strengths and challenges of implementing citizen science at public libraries. The data covers librarians and users attitudes towards citizen science, their motivations to participate, their perceived ability to implement a citizen science project (as for librarians) or to contribute to science (as for library users), and the participants intention to keep engaged with citizen science, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Responses to closed-ended survey questions are analyzed at a descriptive level. The qualitative feedback from the focus group and the open-ended survey question on motivations is subjected to a thematic analysis. The role of health sciences libraries in supporting medical image consent standards survey documentation

<p><strong><em>Objective</em>:</strong> To determine if health sciences library workers were familiar with best practices regarding informed consent for the publication of medical images and if they incorporate the recommendations into their professional work.<br><br><strong><em>Methods</em>: </strong>A survey was developed by the authors and distributed to library listservs in the United States. The results of the survey were tabulated in R.<br><br><strong><em>Results</em>: </strong>A total of 90 respondents were included in the data analysis with all respondents reporting multiple responsibilities in their professional role. While the majority of library workers (59%) were familiar with the best practices, few incorporated the recommendations into their everyday professional work.<br><br><strong><em>Conclusions</em>:</strong> The professional work of health sciences library workers does not appear to include a significant inclusion of the best practices for the informed consent for the publication of medical images. There is a need for future research to better understand how library workers can better incorporate their knowledge of medical image publication consent standards into their work.</p>

<p><strong>Overview of Dataset&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>This dataset was developed through a collaboration between Dalhousie University and the University of Montr&eacute;al. This project aims to help break down the silos in which the two primary target audiences- information science researchers and academic librarians- conduct their research. The Canadian Publications in Library and Information Science dataset makes visible the work that librarians do and allows other Canadian researchers to discover the research of their colleagues.&nbsp;<br><br></p> <p>The dataset contains 1,326 distinct authors, 850 of which were classified as practitioners and 476 as academics. Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?

<p><strong>Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?</strong></p><p>Several scholars in Knowledge Organization (KO) and in Library and Information Science (LIS) have expressed concern that the field seems driven primarily by practical applications and professional practices. Others have stressed the need for research in the field to be more theoretically motivated, lest it continue to be perceived not as a scientific field but simply as a set of techniques used to solve problems. Hence, there have been calls for scholars and practitioners to make explicit the epistemological assumptions underlying methods used to design information services and tools for their users as this can help identify inherent biases.&nbsp;</p><p>In answer to these calls, we examined the epistemological assumptions underlying methods deployed in some fields of KO and LIS – namely information retrieval and topic mapping. A careful examination of the underlying assumptions to these methods showed that they exhibited epistemological hybridity, in this case, a combination of empiricism and positivism with a dash of pragmatism and hermeneutics at the end.&nbsp;</p><p>We therefore hypothesize that it may not be a straightforward task for a researcher or an information professional to claim that a method borrows solely from positivism, rationalism, empiricism or social-constructivism or historicism or hermeneutics, simply because there is a gap between epistemological theories and methods linked to them. Also, a given piece of work may deploy methods linked to different epistemological theories.</p><p>Although our examples are taken from LIS and KO fields, we suspect that our observations may be generalized to other scientific disciplines and fields of inquiry.</p>
