Data licences and organization type of contributors to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility as of 19 January 2016

Data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility were extracted using R (version 3.2.0) on 9 July 2015 using the rgbif package (version 0.9.0) (Chamberlain, S., Ram, K., Barve, V. & Mcglinn, D. (2015) Package ‘rgbif’: Interface to the Global 'Biodiversity' Information Facility 'API' http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/rgbif/rgbif.pdf). The ‘rights’ statements was extracted for all occurrence datasets with one or more observations. A total of 12,458 datasets were extracted, but only about 11% of the datasets have an explicit data-useage-rights statement at the dataset level. However, some datasets use the occurrence level ‘rights’ and ‘accessRights’ fields. To extract these data the rights information was obtained from the first record of each dataset where a rights statement was missing at the dataset level.

The datasets were categorized into 13 different types depending on the origin of the observations.

Biodiversity Information Facility or data centre

Botanical Garden or Herbarium

Citizen science

Commercial

Data publisher

Educational

Government

Museum

Network

Parks Authority or Nature Reserve

Research institution

Society

Foundations

Map of Tigray's mineral resources (north Ethiopia) - Canadian and other international mining licences

In Tigray, artisanal mining of gold in the low-lying areas with outcropping Precambrian rocks is one of the major off-farm income sources. The 17th C. Portuguese traveller Barradas had already mentioned gold production in Tembien. Rural youth seasonally migrate to inhospitable lowlands and gorges such as the largely uninhabited Weri’i River valley, to search for placer gold, washed out from weathered gold-containing quartz veins within the meta-sediments and meta-volcanics. In recent decades, large-scale gold exploration and mining of gold deposits has been carried out in various parts of Tigray by local (such as the Ezana Mining Development P.L.C.) and several foreign exploration companies particularly from Canada. Recently, The Ethiopia Cable exposed links between big Canadian mining interests and a renewed PR campaign (involving Canadian professor and lobbyist Ann Fitz-Gerald) to whitewash the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments. Earlier on, it had already been suggested that one of the reasons for the Canadian government being very late in officially addressing the atrocities in the ongoing Tigray war, might be related to the country’s mining interests in Tigray.

Here we contextualise Tigray’s gold and base metal resources, and present a map of active and applied mineral exploration and mining licenses in Tigray. The largest exploration license areas are concessions of Canadian companies, followed by the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Uncommon Commons? Creative Commons licencing in Horizon 2020 Data Management Plans

As policies, good practices and funder mandates on research data management evolve, more emphasis has been put on the licencing of data. Licencing information allow potential re-users to quickly identify what they can do with the data in question and is therefore an important component to ensure the reusability of research.

In my research I analyse a pre-existing collection of 840 Horizon 2020 public data management plans (DMPs) available on the repository of the University of Vienna, Phaidra,, to determine which ones mention creative commons licences and among those who do, what licences are being used.

This excel file contains the data underlying the publication "Uncommon Commons? Creative Commons licencing in Horizon 2020 Data Management Plans ".

Sheet 1 contains the data collected in the previous "Data Re-Use" project: 840 DMPs downloaded from CORDIS and vetted to ensure they are public documents and not copyrighted

Sheet 2 contains the same data as sheet 1, with columns D to Q not visible (for better reading) but an added column R which now contains the CC licening information (where available)

Sheet 3 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC BY relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 4 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-SA relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 5 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-NC relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 6 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-ND relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 7 is filtered so that only the projects containing Cc-BY-NC-ND relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 8 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-NC-SA relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 9 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC0 relevant information are shown

Sheet 10 provides an overview table of the relevant licences (manual entry)

Sheet 11 and 12 contain graphic visulations of the data as used in the article

Licence to share: how Creative Commons brought clarity to the digital rights and enabled fair content reuse across the web.

CC 0, CC BY or CC BY-NC-SA? We talked to Cable Green, the interim CEO and Director of Open Education at Creative Commons. Cable explained the rationale behind the licenses on digital work and provided us with a practical guide to how to use these. Further on, we ventured into the world of Open Education and how it is empowered by Creative Commons licensing. And yes - we did also talk about Covid-19 and how it is changing the way we think about open access and collaboration.

Episode links:

https://creativecommons.org/

Jeu "Licences to kill"
