Dataset for Gate-to-Gate Life Cycle Assessment of Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Pre-Treatment

Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for improving environmental sustainability and conserving resources. Due to the diversity of LIB applications and recycling technologies, the environmental and energy impacts are not well understood. Comprehensive assessments must consider the distinct operations, methodologies, technology efficiency, and final treatment of materials. This study provides a partial gate-to-gate life cycle analysis (LCA) of a small-scale recycling plant in the Czech Republic, focusing on pre-treatment of spent LIBs from electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics cells (CECs). The study highlights the benefits of recycling pre-treatment for CECs, significantly reducing environmental impact categories (EICs) such as climate change, eutrophication, and resource use. A high secondary use rate of obtained materials is crucial for environmental benefits, with metal reuse from packaging, connectors, and current collectors being especially important.

Life Cycle Assessment Dataset for Kidney Care Environmental Optimisations within Haemodialysis

This dataset supports a study on environmental optimizations in haemodialysis (HD) kidney care, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, water usage, and social impacts such as forced labour. It includes detailed analyses of interventions to improve sustainability across multiple domains:

Travel Reduction: Data explores the impact of reducing patient travel distances by 10%, 50%, and 90%, highlighting significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings (up to 2,540 kg CO2e per patient annually) and associated reductions in water usage and forced labour risks. Interventions include promoting home-based dialysis, telemedicine, and optimized patient facility allocation.

Water Management: The dataset documents innovations such as reclaiming reverse osmosis water for reuse, optimizing water treatment plant operations, and reducing water consumption during dialysis processes. Larger centres and daily operation schedules show better water efficiency compared to smaller, less frequent setups.

Waste Management: Data highlights strategies for diverting waste from clinical to domestic streams, recycling dialysis materials, and adopting advanced technologies like pyrolysis. These measures reduce the environmental and economic burden of waste disposal, including incineration costs.

Energy Optimizations: Included interventions cover energy-saving technologies such as heat exchangers in dialysis machines, solar panel installations, and IT system automation. Solar energy adoption demonstrates varied CO2e savings based on regional energy mixes.

Incremental Dialysis: Data supports the transition to incremental dialysis—starting with fewer weekly sessions—to preserve resources, reduce GHG emissions, and maintain residual kidney function, offering both environmental and clinical benefits.

Each intervention was assessed using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, with functional units based on annual HD use for one patient. Metrics include carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e), water deprivation, and forced labour hours, aligned with EU Product Environmental Footprint standards. The dataset provides comparative results to guide clinical sites in prioritizing high-impact interventions, offering actionable insights into sustainable HD care.

To enable and support the uptake of semantic ontologies, we present a core ontology developed specifically to capture the data relevant for life cycle sustainability assessment. We further demonstrate the utility of the ontology by using it to integrate data relevant to sustainability assessments, such as EXIOBASE and the Yale Stocks and Flow Database to the Semantic Web. These datasets can be accessed by the machine-readable endpoint using SPARQL, a semantic query language.

POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) serves as a tool to estimate the potential impacts of a waste management system. Sleman Regency needs a scenario of waste management with a lower environmental impact. The present study aims to determine the potential impact of the existing business as usual (BAU) waste management practice in Sleman Regency and compare it with several alternatives to waste management strategies. The LCA method was applied following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. The impact was assessed using the CML-1A Baseline and ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ methods, along with data from the Ecoinvent database. In the BAU scenario, the impact values observed in every 1 ton of waste managed were Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 4.90E+03 kg CO2 eq, Acidification Potential (ADP) of 2.78E-03 kg SO2 eq, Eutrophication Potential (EP) of 4.92E-02 kg PO4-eq, Human Toxicity Potential (HTP) of 2.06E+01 kg 1.4 DB eq, and Land Use Potential (LUP) of 4.71E+01 kg C deficit. Processing waste into biomass pellets and Refuse Derived Fuel accompanied by waste reduction could decrease the GWP value to 34.04 kg CO2 eq, ADP to 2.96E-06 kg SO2 eq, EP to 7.33E-05 kg PO4-eq, HTP to 3.70E-04 kg 1.4 DB eq, and LUP to 2.11E-03 kg C deficit. The results of waste management with the lowest impact value can serve as a reference for formulating waste management policies in the study area.

Towards suitable practices for the integration of social life cycle assessment into the ecodesign framework of hydrogen-related products

The hydrogen sector is envisaged as one of the key enablers of the energy transition that the European Union is facing to accomplish its decarbonization targets. However, regarding the technologies that enable the deployment of a hydrogen economy, a growing concern exists about potential burden-shifting across sustainability
dimensions. In this sense, social life cycle assessment arises as a promising methodology to evaluate the social implications of hydrogen technologies along their supply chains. In the context of the European projects eGHOST and SH2E, this study seeks to advance on key methodological aspects of social life cycle assessment when it
comes to guiding the ecodesign of two relevant hydrogen-related products: a 5 kW solid oxide electrolysis cell stack for hydrogen production, and a 48 kW proton-exchange membrane fuel cell stack for mobility applications.
Based on the social life cycle assessment results for both case studies under alternative approaches, the definition of a product-specific supply chain, making use of appropriate cut-off criteria, was found to be the preferable choice when addressing system boundaries definition. Moreover, performing calculations according to the activity variable approach was found to provide valuable results in terms of social hotspots identification to support subsequent decision-making processes on ecodesign, while the direct calculation approach is foreseen as a complement to ease the interpretation of social scores. It is concluded that advancements in the formalization of
such suitable practices could foster the integration of social metrics into the sustainable-by-design framework of hydrogen-related products.
